About
I've been into games since I was able to reach the joystick on the Pac-Man arcade cabinet. That was 1982 - ever since that day I knew gaming and I would be bound by fate in some way, shape or form that I've still yet to figure out.

Until then, I've decided to just play games, enjoy them, blog about games and otherwise not shut up about them. Well, I do think about other stuff, I just keep coming back to the whole games thing.

Metroid is probably still my all-time favorite series. Its the one I keep coming back to year after year despite which version it might be. Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 2 are my favorites of the series and I also often enjoy anything Metroid-like. I enjoy the solitude and exploration of such games.

I also enjoy Shin Megami Tensei, Fallout, Deus Ex, The Elder Scrolls - pretty much anything with a lot of solitary exploration and a large world makes me a rather happy camper. To contrast this I usually need some lighter and happier games as well, which could be anything from a Pokemon game to a fashion game. Retro games of most stripes are something I still enjoy. Sometimes you just need that sort of contrast to keep going.

My platforms of choice tend to be handhelds, I'm starting to consider dropping any non-Nintendo console in favor of PC since Sony's IPs don't appeal to me and Halo just ends up on PC at some point anyway. I don't hate Playstation per se, I just hate what its become under the current Sony.

I do keep a PS2 handy to revisit Playstation's glory days. Great console, easily one of the best platforms aside from SNES, DS and Dreamcast.

As for other things about me, I guess we'll find out, won't we?

So someone finally bothered to put PS Vita cards to the test on the value level. I had my suspicions about the Vita memory cards before playing the demo kiosks and was rather puzzled regarding the large load times of Vita games such as Gravity Rush.

I had gone on and on about the price of Vita cards and why they were too expensive and Sony fanboys swore up and down the prices were what they were because of reasons. One of the latest defenses being that the cards were probably Class 10 reading speed.

Well, that's a nice theory, but Sony doesn't say what class the Vita cards are. I checked in-store and online, but couldn't find any details on the matter. Class 10 SD cards are typically around $59.99 - give or take - if they're 16GB cards, which is the asking price of the Vita card.

Turns out they're not Class 10, though, but Class 4 when someone put them to the test on GameFaqs - meaning, they read at the same speed as your standard 16GB SD card, which can be found at a Radio Shack for $19.99 to $29.99 depending on whether or not they had a sale that week (and I've yet to pass through on a day they're not on sale). I did pick an 16GB SD card last week for $19.99 because I'm a cheap bastard that doesn't want to fork out for a proper 360 HDD right now, but when I do it means I'll then have more storage for my 3DS than I will likely ever need.

This also means the 32GB Vita card should be $49.99 to $59.99, not $99.99, as that is the range for an SD card of a similar class

If you're heading out for a Playstation Vita today, my advice is buy whatever card rips you off the least. You will not be getting the storage you deserve for your money, but at least you'll be getting something closer to your dollar value for a 4GB card than you would anything higher than that. Plus its not like all your PSOne Classics are available for play today anyway.

Additional link with more discussion on the matter.

And now, for the SDF's excuses for this one. The rest of us know what this was really about - mitigating the damage of the PS Vita's price point and nothing more for as long as Sony could fool the early adopters.

What I'm really saying here is if you're getting that 32GB card, you should just give that $100 who would spend it better. I won't turn it down.

That's a good argument. Shame the Memory cards are a bit lame.

Still, understand why they're doing it, they're undercutting retailers on the games so it "could" be a bit of a kickback to them. Still.

I wasn't too fussed about the price of my 16gb card - I'd have preferred a 32gb, but they're not available here.

Overall I paid £209 for the Vita and £35 for the card, so a 16gb Vita for under £250 and I'm happy as Larry.
Proprietary memory format is over-priced and under-performing?! Film at eleven.

Has there ever been a proprietary storage solution that wasn't so? Xbox HDDs, I'm looking at you.

The information is not surprising, and I would be pretty chuffed if I were looking to buy a PSVita, but a "So there X-Defence Force! Told-ya-so" post does little to raise the discourse.
@SC - I suppose its plausible that retailers could get a kickback, but I doubt its a big one. I'd tell my customers the truth and tell them to get a 4GB card and wait out a price drop on cards. Even the 8GB card is a scam at $39.99.

What's really goading is the write speed is really class 2, which means download speeds for anying large are going to be pretty bad. And PSP and Vita gams are genrally larger.

You could tap out a 16GB card on Vita pretty fast, but a 16GB card for my 3DS will last forever. Its all in the size of the games and the demands they place on the system. The value just isn't there on Vita.
That just really sucks, guess that explains why the demos took so long to load when I checked out the Vita. Buying digital Vita games is a really bad deal, they cost more in the long run because you have to buy the cards, and they load really slow.
I don't doubt that within a short time, the memory cards will be much cheaper. That tends to be the way things go... newer tech is always more expensive and once production costs come down, the price follows.

Then again, the price will likely drop about the same time as the Vita 2 is released! LOL!
Eh, this was the same issue with PSP at launch. Then Sandisk licensed the tech (which Sandisk has been hinting that they did already) which brought the general cost down. This is why I got the 3G bundle, for the 8GB mem card and 3G.

Now having said all of this, why does this entire post read like it was written by an angry, bitter cunt of a man who hangs around NeoGaf or N4G? I really want to ask something of the Silent Protagonist... show us on the doll where Ken Kuturugi touched you. You hated PSP, and you've spent the better part of a year being a Vita detractor from the getgo. Did he kill your dog? Touch your no-no region? Where does ALL this anger come from?
@Sheppy - Given my posts of lavish praise for MGS Peacewalker, Persona 3 Portable and Dissidia and a rather heated defense of Tactics Ogre LUCT over thie shit review it got on this side - I would just LOVE to know where you get this idea I somehow hated the PSP.

I don't hate the PSP and I don't hate the Vita - I hate how Sony handles the PSP and the Vita. This is kind of like how I don't hate Bioware, I just hate what they're becoming under EA or I've started to hate Reggie Fils-Aime because he's beginning to remind me of out SCEA is sometimes.

I like video games and game platforms, I hate how some companies handle them and I have plenty of good reasons to hate those companies for doing what they do. I see Vita as wasted potential because of the choices Sony has made.

Are we clear? I would be getting a Vita tomorrow were it not for the rather large list of mistakes Sony made pre-launch. I was on-board back at the Persona 4 announcement and ever since then Sony has given me reason after reason to reconsider.
I'm surprised at how unavailable the 32GB card is. I'm also surprised how little they've highlighted that you basically need a memory card to even save games, despite the fact that they've already advertised that save files can go on the actual game-card.

In terms of the standard, non savvy consumer, this isn't a very good launch prospect. With the 3DS; you buy it, and you have more storage than 90% of the market will ever need.
Considering I have yet to get a definitive answer on the "Play your entire PS3 library in your hands!" Or if it will even actually happen, I'm holding out.

I imagine the PSV-2000 will feature internal storage, too, but I hope to god I don't have to wait the guaranteed long cycle life of this gadget before they confirm that feature.
"I did pick an 16GB SD card last week for $19.99 because I'm a cheap bastard that doesn't want to fork out for a proper 360 HDD right now"

Wait: how do you use an SD card on the 360? And how the hell did I not know this?
I'm kind of amazed with smartphones being out there so long that Sony designs the thing only half-acknowledging the sort of features people have come to expect. It has notifications, but no multitasking. Yeah, iPhone didn't have it at first, but it also got it sorted out years ago and the 3DS has this multi-tasking element to the needed degree for a handheld.

Its like when people say "Well, Steam wasn't perfect at first" when people scrutinize Origin. Yeah, Steam had problems starting out, but it was the only service of its kind back then. Origin had all the time it needed to match the service Steam is now, I don't want to wait around for Origin to catch up just because EA's lame ideas didn't work.
@Andy - SD compatible USB thumbdrive.

I was actually dumbfounded by the fact it worked, because I had gotten a 16gb Cruzer Micro the 360 wouldn't read and while troubleshooting I took my SD card out of my Wii and put it in the compatible USB thumbdrive I had and the 360 detected it. Since i had to go back to the mall anyway, I returned the Cruzer and got the SD card.

The 360 flags it as below performance standards, but I've installed and am running the original Mass Effect off of it with no noticeable issues. I've also downloaded demos like Rayman Origins and it runs just fine.
I knew it. The fact Sony was keeping the card speeds a secret is no mistake. I'd rather buy the inevitable Chinese knockoff or whatever SanDisk releases in the future. Until then Sony gets none of my money for a Vita. I would just purchase games on a cartridge and a small card for save files, but I don't want physical copies for this thing. After putting 16gb in my PSP I can't go back to physical media on a handheld. It's too inconvenient.
@TSP

Well shit! Looks like I learned something today!
@Elsa

But it's not new tech, it's old tech that you are paying more fir because of ???

@sheppy

The post didn't read anything like that. Why does your response reek of a Sony defense force member?

That all being said, I'm glad this justifies my suspicions that Sony is trying to sell us 100 dollar sandwiches. Ill wait til their sandwich price is in line with the rest of the worlds because I thoroughly enjoy not being duped.
Wow just wow how stupid are you people, I know this is old but I have to point out that the source of this "speed test" is a troll on a forum who was just lying. There's a reason there aren't any video's of speed test or anything on hackers blogs and that's because it can't be done, yet you people are willing to believe some random guy a on forum who got banned did it...
