Bayonetta hit U.S. retails today, and for me it was a day one purchase. Previously, Destructoid's own ribald Jim Sterling praised the game in a variety of preview coverage which I periodically dismissed given my hateful disposition to all Devil May Cry-themed games.I never once thought the game would score well above 90 on metacritic, nor did I ever think I would be picking it up at launch.
In fact, I praise the genius behind Bayonetta because the studio worked with a restricted budget and with a publisher with a dubious track record: Sega. I hated Devil May Cry 3, and I still do. I hate the very genre behind the franchise because I suck at those games and I don't like sore fingers. To me DMC was a clumsy button-mashing experience, one that I had discarded early on given the insane achievements and the retarded combat system. Bayonetta is just the opposite, a game with a fluid and easily accessible combat system, and a balanced flow of difficulty.
So how the fuck can a short demo make a biased guy completely fall in love? The answer is simple, Bayonetta is quintessential blend of tits and ass at its finest. Bayonetta herself is not only cooler than Nero, she's way more interesting as a character. In fact, I consider her a feminist hero, a character who is not a girl but a real god damn woman. She even has a mole on her cheek to give a more down-to-earth appearance. Talk about an eye for details!
Bayonetta is an absolute must-play and I recommend that everyone check it out even if they don't love the genre.
I kind of doubt that a virtual woman who strips as you score points could be called a "feminist hero" though...
Either way, She's obviously confident and assured of her own sexuality. She uses her feminism as a weapon and a way to get what she wants.
I don't know if she's feminist, but it's far from Sexist.
Of course, Feminists are harder to please than PETA, so I think there's going to be some huge fall out from this...
Enh, maybe in a superficial pop culture icon sort of way, like Lara Croft, sure. Feminist Hero...
In actual game, though? She's sexual, but I don't get the impression she's pushing a feminist/pro-woman agenda. You might be on to something, but I'm totally not convinced on that PoV.
I mean, she's no Foxy Brown.
Yeah, the PS3 demo does an OK job giving you an idea where she's coming from if you play through to the end of it. She's not effectively blank like the Dead or Alive chicks, which is a a relief.
