Games you didn't play: Dead Space
The RPGist | 9:34 PM on 10.11.2009 16 comments

I'm starting a series of blogs in homage to games that weren't as popular as some of their contemporaries by way of retro-reviews. There are two conditions to qualify a game that wasn't played: 1: Disappointing sales, and/or 2: a low meta-critic. I will also conclude each blog with a final verdict broken down into the following criteria:

1. Recommended
2. Recommended with reservation
3. Recommended with heavy reservation

The first game to be mentioned is the sci-fi survival-horror game Dead Space which I am currently finishing up on insane. I bought it last fall, and it's always been a great fall game. When the air is cooler, and it's darker outside, some games really stand out as must-plays -- Dead Space is one of them, with its sharp graphics and some awesome characters -- it's managed to create a universe of its own -- spawning a planned trilogy and an animated movie.

The game pushed a disappointing 75k on both platforms (not including Wii which has only sold 0.3k) which may appear as a lot but it really isn't given the overall quality of the game and the publisher expectations. It's actually one of those games I rarely see on my friends list but I am not sure about this community as a whole.

What was so great about it?

1. Awesome graphics
2. Atmospheric
3. Characters who felt real and involved
4. Zombies buurrrrr

What was bad?

1. Unclear directives sometimes?
2. Hard parts?

Verdict: Recommended!

This is a game that everyone should play regardless of what they think of survival horror games, and one of the great fall games best played at night when it's cold. Bring on the sequel!

I gotta say you're not gonna convince anybody to play a game by giving them a 3 item checklist.

I think you may have a good idea, but in order to convince someone to play something you need more substance. As Wry Guy said three line aren't really going to convince a person of anything.

Also I may just be being picky, but I would hardly use Dead Space and the word Retro in the same sentance considering it is a current gen game. All in all I think you have a good idea here, but if you are going to convince me or anyone to play something you need to add some more detail.

Wry Guy and squirrelyg make good points about blogging, but I gotta admit Dead Space was amazingly underrated imo. The game deserved a lot more praise and any mature player should have this in their game library. Any survival horror fan needs this game in their library. 'nuff said

Dead Space is good , that'S why I didn't finished it , traded-in and re-bought it for a cheap price.

Yep.. that's about it.

Most underrated game of 2008, and in my opinion, one of the best console games of this generation.

I played it a month or two ago and really enjoyed it, and was disappointed to hear that it didn't sell well. I guess I contributed to that, since I got it secondhand from a fellow Dtoider.

Unclear directives? Dead Space probably had the clearest directives ever.

Simply press the locator button and a magical arrow points where to go next:

Also, hard parts? Dead Space was exactly as hard as you wanted it. You play it on Easy? It was easy. You play it on Hard? It was hard.

Agreed that it's an excellent, underrated game, though.

I only slightly dsagree with you about the difficulty. I played on Hard the first time and it was hard, but when I played the Insane difficulty or w/e it's called, I was breezing through the game with just my cutter. Was really disappointed tbh. Only difference I saw was a few more rounds to kill enemies and maybe taking more damage. I guess it's as much as I could hope for though.

@Captain
Disagree on the difficulty.

Easy was easy. Medium was easy. Hard was easy.

Also, this is every boss in Dead Space ever: LET ME SIT HERE LIKE A FATASS WHILE YOU SHOOT ME WEAK SPOT.

Ok, well let's agree that there weren't hard parts, like the review intimates.

I started playing on hard, but found it too hard so I went down to easy. I then found out that the blue containers could be opened. I get the impression it might be easier if I used them.

Here are some issues I found with the game:

Issac's melee attack looked stupid. (Windwill spin!)
The flamethrower was rubbish.
