As announced, every week I will run a comparison series aimed to contrast the 360 with the PS3. This edition is about the all-important multiplatforms. Sony and Microsoft have long contended that multiplats sell better on each respective console. So what do the numbers say?
Well, there are many multiplatform titles but I've decided just to focus on the major franchises. For the most part, games do get ported to the PS3 with often poor results. For example, Fallout 3 was considered superior in 360 as well as Orange Box and Bayonetta.
Lets examine FPS starting with the popular CoD franchise
Call of Duty 4 (Modern Warfare)
Xbox 360: 8.19M
PS3: 5.07M
Modern Warfare 2:
Xbox 360: 10.04M
PS3: 7.27M
The sale difference is roughly 3 million for each title. That's HUGE in terms of sales.
Battlefield BC
Xbox 360: 1.29M
PS3: 0.89M
Battlefield BC2
Xbox 360: 1.12M
PS3: 0.68M
Clearly, the 360 is a solid winner with almost double the sales for BC2.
How about RPGs?
Fallout 3:
Xbox 360: 2.96M
PS3: 1.97M
Dragon Age:
Xbox 360: 1.52M
PS3: 0.76M
Once again, the 360 is selling better.
Action/Adventure
Batman AA:
Xbox 360: 1.49M
PS3: 1.90M
Assassin's Creed
Xbox 360: 4.81
PS3: 3.68
A bit more ambiguity here. Batman was clearly a "preferred" release for PS3 which could explain the minimal gap in sales. Assassin's Creed is a winner on 360 even AC2 although those sales are much more marginal (not reported here).
Ugh, sports for the 5 people on Destructoid who care about that shallow genre.
Madden '10
Xbox 360: 2.33
PS3: 1.85
NHL 10
Xbox 360: 0.49
PS3: 0.36
Same marginal sale difference on other titles like NBA. But 360 wins here.
Fighting
Street Fighter IV:
Xbox 360: 1.41M
PS3: 1.65M
Soul Calibur IV
Xbox 360: 1.37M
PS3: 1.11M
I'm willing to call this a tie.
So overall, who wins in this area? With these representative samples in mind, it's absolutely fair to say multiplatform games sell better on the 360.
Moore is proud
.......I can dig it.
