Borderlands VS Fallout 3
The RPGist | 6:08 PM on 10.22.2009 40 comments

I'm going to run a slightly biased comparison series based on the wholesome cock-blowing experience that is Borderlands. It's rare that I ever run late for class/work playing a console game but I haven't been able to stop playing. This game is the shit but how does it hold up against a possible competitor? The big boss at Gearbox commented that Fallout 3 wasn't fun because it didn't have a robust shooting component -- was he right? How does this newcomer hold up against the mighty fallout Franchise? Is this ip the beginning of a new AAA franchise?

What follows is a comprehensive index of ordinal values ranked between 1 (low) to 10 (high) on several key components:

B = Borderlands
F = Fallout 3

Graphics
B: 10
F: 9

Comment: Borderlands' questionable graphical makeover is far from disappointed. However, it's hard to make a comparison because the formats are not equal. Fallout boosts more realistic vistas with stunning geographical accuracy whereas Borderlands touts a more comic book feel. The characters in Fallout 3 felt slightly dated in look.

Sound:
B: 10
F: 9

Comment: I was actually disappointed in the soundtrack of Fallout 3 given the top-notch atmosphere in Fallout 2. However, Borderlands has absolutely captured the mood of the wasteland. It's truly immersible.

Gameplay:
B: 10
F : 8

Comment: the Vats system did significantly slow things down in Fallout, and the regular FPS mode was far from accurate or mind blowing. The action in Borderlands is the best I've seen in a hybrid.

Story:
B: 8
F: 10

Comments: Fallout rides on a fully pre-created universe set in motion by its predecessor whereas Borderlands had to start from scratch. You're searching for some Utopian vault, nothing profound but nothing that detracts from one's overall enjoyment.

Characterization
B: 10
F: 10

Comments: The robots are hilarious and the other characters are well done in Borderlands. Fallout's characters also feel alive even if there is some considerable repetition.

Role Playing:
B: 10
F: 10

Comments:It's a true joy to level up in Borderlands and it's what makes it so addicting besides the rewarding loot-system. Fallout had the same feeling with all the optional perks. Both feel like robust role playing games in their own styles. Customization is slightly more expansive in Fallout 3.

Replayability and value
B: 10
F: 10

Comments: Both worlds are open-ended and vast. There is considerable time to be spent in both and more after the initial run. Both games reward gamers with achievements for reaching the highest levels.

Achievements:
B: 10
F: 10

Comments: both sets of achievements are fun and rewarding. Nothing that isn't attainable

Overall average:

B: 9.6
F: 9.5

Conclusion: Borderlands is with no doubt a great game which feels slightly, and overall, better than Fallout 3. The difference is marginal but it has definitely set the bar for how action should be integrated into RPGs. It's obviously influenced heavily by Diablo and it seems to be a flawless translation from the fantasy setting of Diablo to the FPS-sci fi setting. Play this game people!

I agree with you completely! Borderlands is the most engrossing experience ever as far as FPS RPG's go for me. I get completely lost in the game for all its amazingness and beauty.

"The big boss at Gearbox commented that Fallout 3 wasn't fun because it didn't have a robust shooting component -- was he right?"

No, because he's comparing apples to oranges.

It's like saying Metal Gear Solid was a better shooter than KOTOR. It makes no sense, considering Fallout 3 is mostly an RPG first with Faux-Action elements, and Borderlands is a Shooter first with RPG elements.

Also, how in the world can you compare a single player game to a game who's top selling point is coop multiplayer? Is Oblivion better than Halo ODST? Are they even close to the same experience?

I gotta agree with Magnalon and Steel Squirrel here. Compare Borderlands to another co-op game if you have to.

I don't think its as bad a comparison as what some people are stating.

Though I do have different opinions with a few things about Fallout than you. First of all I was really pleased with the soundtrack. I listen to rap and alternative/rock music so the soundtrack was all kindsa different and new to me. Also, I never got the feeling of things being slowed down because of VATS.

its still poor judgement and dicktacular on their part either way :P gearbox made both versions :| one version might not have securerom but still were made by the same ppl.

and if you want constructiveness i think comparing them is a bad idea. There's gonna be 3 different similar at-first-glance games. Rage, Fallout, Borderlands. Rage and Fallout are on opposite ends of the spectrum with borderlands in the middle and off the path a bit :P

Your going to the wrong site, IGN hasn't been a reputable site for almost 10 years.

Borderlands is an FPS with RPG elements.
Fallout 3 is an RPG with FPS elements.
They may appear to be similar but under the hood they are not. Yes they are both great games.

Nice write up. I wouldn't compare the two, but you did it in a good way. Also, IGN is far from reputable.

Who are you all to say what he can and cannot compare? If I want to compare Halo: ODST to Oblivion simply because they both have capital O's in the name, then you better believe i goddamn will!

Know what image I'm getting in my head right now?

All signs point to Hoborg.

Wow, I hate that "apples and oranges" crap. You can compare it and say one is better regardless of this or that detail. I can say Family Guy is better than South Park, or vice versa. They're both comedies, they're both tv shows, but Family Guy is random clips with ridiculous characters and South Park is a funny, story driven comedy. Apples and oranges are still fruit, still round, etc. I will always like apples more because they have a better UI. *Oranges require peeling*

I'm with Caelum. Whether or not the comparisons are constructive or lead to anything insightful or enlightening is a different question, but comparing things can be a really useful to organize your thoughts or pick out little details about design, narrative, whatever.

This is ridiculous, what does Borderlands have ONE SONG? That's all I've heard and it's in the intro. The soundtrack of Fallout was perfect for that game, and created one of the most immersible experiences of all time.

I totally agree that claptrap is funny, and you get to see some funny lines here and there. But BORDERLANDS is not a character driven game AT ALL. It's a really fun shooter.
====================================================

Borderlands is a fantastically fun game, but it's nothing like Fallout 3. The only similarities they share are...
- Both have guns
- Both are first person
- Both take place in a land with lots of trash, Fallout has a lot more though
- Both have robots

The circle doesn't fit into the square hole bro.

I dont really see anything wrong with this comparison, but at the same time I haven't played alot of Fallout 3 (only scratching the surface of the game really) and I have never played Boarderlands. I see similarities because Im RPG ignorant. I dont play RPG's, I look at BL and FO 3 and I see games set in a post apocalyptic environment where you can shoot people and get XP and go up in levels. To me that seems similar, but for people who know both games really well, they would probably find major differences. Either way RPGist is not saying FO 3 is bad, they are both great games, he just prefers BL over FO 3.

I knew there was a shit storm in here just from the headline.

I love Fallout as much as the next guy and I've only seen Borderlands in action but from what I can tell there isn't much there to directly compare.

I don't think you're Hoborg. I could be wrong, but I just can't see him coming back a third time (a fourth time if Wii Hater was Hoborg as well). But no-one can deny that the way you write your blogs is a lot like his style, and you share some similar opinions.

On topic: Fallout 3 is far superior to Boderlands. That is all.

Fallout felt way too much like Oblivion, and I ultimately felt like I wasn't getting anywhere. Your comment about the role playing elements is spot on though. I hate level grinding, but when I gain XP by shooting a guy in the face who then bursts into flames, I can't help but love to shoot everything I can. Skill points feel like they're making a difference everytime I choose something.

I think it might be a bit unfair to compare Fallout 3 with Borderlands on anything but similar setting. However, On a personal level I can definitely say I have enjoyed Borderlands quite a bit more than Fallout 3.

I don't get why everyone is making such a big deal out of this... Just let the man make his comparison. This is all his opinion anyway and he took the time to write it and share it with us. I'm always down to hear what people think about things, others' perspectives can be quite interesting. Shit... one of my first blog posts compared Tales of Symphonia with Radiohead's song Paranoid Android. I look back at it now and realize how silly it was... good thing the cblogs were new back then because I know I would have been flamed for it, lol.
