I need abit of help guys. I have to send in my PS3 because of the 2.40 update problem. Thing is, they want a receipt, and it was a gift, and my aunt didn't keep the receipt. Also, I kept using it to watch my HD rips for a while, and now the PS3 is at 2.52. I don't know how many of youse guys had to send in your PS3, but I just want to know if they're going to charge me out the ass.
Yeah yeah, I know DToid isn't my personal tech support and etc, but I'm just hoping somebody here could offer a helping hand.
Or we could just make fun of another failpost. Whatever.
SIDENOTE: Just so we all know what I'm dealing with exactly: It stopped reading discs, and sometimes hangs at the wavy intro. At first it wasn't going past the wavy intro at all, but i got around that hurdle. Now its just random freezing and no disc reading. Also appreciating help so far, thanks guys.
I think you're one of the few dude I know with a failing PS3. Never have any problems with mine. I also never heard anything about 'the 2.40 update problem' you're talking about. You make it sound as if this is a common problem. Anyone else heard about it?
It's never happened to me, but I'd try what Cwal said.
Also, which updated added that secret menu? Was that a recent one, or was it out in 2.40? I think it may have been 2.50... If you can get to that, give it a shot.
2.50 added it, hence the reason I updated to 2.52 (Aside from me forgetting so long about my PS3's problem since I had been watching things off my external HD).
The secret menu reformat didn't work either. I dunno, I'd like to solve it myself but I'm pretty sure the cardboard coffin is my only answer. And dropping $150 for them to fix it.
Though I will try Full Format from my laptop first, or just use Eraser and decimate the harddrive. Thanks for the tip Cwal.
If you can contact your aunt and ask her if she remembers where she got it and how she paid for it. Stores can sometimes go way back in your purchase history by method of payment as long as its not cash. I procured a receipt for my PS3 from Best Buy that way. Bought it online and they were able to send me my receipt, for free no less, took a while though. Otherwise try the format option, I've heard that works on more than a few occasions, especially after that 2.0 update debacle.
So the format didn't work, I'm guessing it was just the disc drive altogether. Oh well, I guess I'll try getting to store to find a backlog of it. Thanks for all the help guys, guess I'll just have to mail off my PS3.
I had the same problem, had to send it in, pay the 150, it was less than a year old.
What model was your PS3? I had a 40 gig, and all of a sudden, it just stopped reading discs. Pain in the ass, but still, basically the only option. Only nice thing is sony was quick about getting it back to me.
I've only heard of this a couple of times, there isn't an army of people out there trying to resolve it. Looks like you might have found a solution though.

Never had to send in my PS3, it works like a charm when I want/need it to.

I don't think its very common. I had updated and then poof. Google'd it, and apparently its a rare glitch that happens.

2.40 stopped my PS3 from working. Just take out the harddrive, find someone with a laptop or external case, and wipe it. Then put it back in.
Problem Solved.

I was going to say do what CWAL37 suggests as it might be a cheap fix.
Good luck!
sad to hear about that.
My PS3's been working fine. I also almost never throw away a receipt, I just toss it in the box with the game (behind the manual).
But yeah, that sucks.

id say nows a good time to upgrade to a larger HDD.

The guys at digital press can probably fix it for you, it won't be cheap, but cheaper then 150 for sure :P
