Woah, easy there tiger.
I actually agree with a good portion of what you're saying because I've had a great time with Brutal Legend, but this reviewer didn't, and whether his opinions matched up with yours or not, they're concerns that some (not all) reviewers and players have agreed with - so they are most likely legitimate.
It's great that you liked the game as much as I did, and it's a shame that some people didn't get as much out of it, but that's no reason for such a hostile, aggressive rant against them.

If people see a 6 and say "I should not play this game," that's not the fault of the reviewer. I'm personally enjoying Brutal Legend a lot, but I don't disagree with that score. Would mine be different? Maybe, but it doesn't matter. I'm glad for multiple takes on the game, and Dtoid's was hardly unique in its criticism of the game.
Doesn't the review say "rent it"? That about sums the game up.
A short 10-ish hour romp with a mediocre multiplayer.

The review was pretty brutal, so I figured I'd give a brutal rebuttal. Plus I don't have any concern for professionalism so I suppose it's easier for me. Having said that, I may have not been so hard on the score itself if the review body was actually more in depth and with actual facts. I mean, if you're going to tell me that an experience is "unbearable" I want to know exactly how that experience went down... otherwise I'm not reading a critical review, instead I'm just taking your word for it.
In fact, I don't care about the score. I suppose if you're a really stuck up gamer, I can understand giving this game a 6. But you're still overlooking a lot in my opinion if you do that. So as I said, I think the review isn't really fair in content.
It may have been a short 10-ish hour romp, but in my opinion it was extremely enjoyable, well put together, and I would definitely do it again. At least, I would commend this game for pushing what it tried to do, and I'd like to reward it for that effort.
A lot of the review was saying "this isn't good enough" but not once did it mention what would have been good enough or at least on the way there. For a critical write up that many people read respectfully, I think we deserve better than that. That's why I said "My opinion is: fuck your opinion", because the review was just an opinion. And it's great to throw opinions around, but I don't think they should end with a score. A critical analysis should result in a score, and that didn't happen. At least one should bring points up about the game that people must know, and allow the readers to judge... however, all I got from that review was pure unholy judgment.
So sorry, I got all steamed up but this is the internets. Thanks for reading and everyone's feedback.

I also would like to comment, that the person who reviewed Demon's Souls had the decency to admit that he sucked at the game and the game has got the best of him. For the Brutal Legend, not so much...
I do find the lack of a mini-map to be an omission, but really the biggest problem I have with driving is that I get to my destination before I can hear much of the killer song that's playing on my car stereo.
I'm pretty over it myself, but this one quote really does clash with my own review philosophy right here: "Simply doesn't deliver the way we wanted it to." But I review games somewhat strangely.
I rented it and beat it. I'll pick it up used in a year or two when the price matches the experience.
Yeah deadline, the tunes are killer. I'm going to either have to find a soundtrack or simply start collecting whichever of those albums I'm missing in real life. As to your problem, I simply chose to drive around until I've had my fill of the tune. There is a ton of bound serpent statues to be found, and I've listened to many a tune scouring the landscape for them. The rewards are well worth it, and I haven't even found them all before completing the main quest.
@Occams, I'm pretty cheap myself more often than not... between pirating games or buying them used. And while I have no pity for some titles such as "FPS Sequel 8", I really wanted Double Fine to get some of my money for this gem... even if it has to go through EA first.

I agree with all of this, Nick just had no clue how to play this game from the start, for us old timers who have played action/rts like Sacrifice or Battlezone 1&2, we know that you can't just fucking turtle in your base building up troops because it doesn't work, you also can't just sit around letting your troops do all the work, you have to get involved that's why your there! If double fine wanted you to play it like a traditional RTS they would remove Eddie from the equation and you would have some overhead RTS style camera. I just don't think Nick was the right person to review this game, they should of had someone who had a little more experience with RTS games, why let someone review a game who despises the genre?
sounds like a case of someone getting mad because someone didn't like their game, and feels obligated to defend the game or else it will somehow lessen the experience for them.
I understand that you're trying to better represent it, and make people that may have been turned off by the review that would still dig it, but from the way you chose to respond, you come off as more of a sour puss. You seem oblivious to the fact that people will perceieve things differently than you and that results in a different game experience, ie the reviewer had difficulty with the RTS sections, and because he did, they took longer and the poorer mechanics drew their head more often. Jesus.
From what I heard pre-release, it sounded a little bit over-ambitious. fair enough if it is as you say and is well-realized, but I'm honestly not surprised at the review, but it seems like people who are into the metal atmosphere like it regardless, and I'm glad they enjoy it.

I feel the game, while a tad short, is excellent.
I also feel that the reviewer lost his objectivity during the game and accidentally got his head shoved up his ass. He was playing the game to review it and give it a score, not to enjoy it. He also seemed to lose his sense of humor. When people do this, they have a tendency to forget the objective of an unbiased review and start nitpicking and subconsciously making up or exaggerating problems that regular people just don't give a shit about.
If you look at any game like a piece of meat while meticulously examining components, every game is going to suck. Demon's Souls would be generic and too hard. Uncharted would have one note gameplay and simplistic puzzles. Assassin's creed would be too repetetive and too episodic in its mission design.

Shit-polka, while I totally get where you're coming from and agree that it does sound like I'm defending the game, you can say the complementary thing about the reviewer. As in, he was a sour puss as well except he was hating on it.
I'm defending the game because it's actually good, and it is so different from most of what we even get the opportunity to play these days that it really should not have been hated on like that.
I know people's perspectives, and perceptions vary. But I don't think people will read my post and feel better about the game they already played. I think people may read my post and realize that it's not as bad as many think it is, and there is real gold in it, and they should maybe grab the game and actually play it... and not just play it, but really dig in to it and try to absorb the nuances, the details, and all the awesomely brutal metal. I simply don't want them to miss out on that.
Because we all know if IGN gives something a 9, but Dtoid gives it a 6, there's a conspiracy and the game is hyped shit.

p.s. this game is worth the price if just for the awesome metal tracks on it. At over 100 songs, if you were to buy them all as cd's at $10 a pop you'd prolly spend more money than on the game... and it wouldn't be 1/100 as brutal!
I loved this game. I've beaten it and I will agree I wish it was longer but hey what can you do. I still find myself playing the game exploring and doing side missions. I've also but it quite a bit of time in the multiplayer. What I have to say about that is play with a friend or two play a match thats two on two or higher or else it will get boring. I agree with a vast majority of your points.
Interestingly, maybe, Psychonauts only has a metacritic score (of 87) 3 points higher than Brutal Legend (84). That's now considered one of those classic games nobody played. It was also a game that had various flaws pointed out around the time it came out (that maybe the platforming gameplay wasn't the best to ever exist, and it got way too hard at the end and that some of the levels were a little forgettable. But people still look back on that now and say 'man, that was a really fine game and everyone should play it.'
More people will play Brutal Legend, but I hope that people look back on it in the same way and remember everything that's absolutely fantastic about the game.
