About

For the basics, check out my forum intro thread.

Or for the lazy, here's all you really need to know about me summed up in one picture:

Now that that's done with, let's move onto the blog itself. This blog isn't going to contain any news. Like EVER. Like NEVER EVER FOREVER NEVER. I have no intention of doing anything other than posting original content (mostly just pictures that I make with my extremely limited photoshop skills along with original stories and whatnot). The bottom line is that I think that there are plenty of people doing editorial/reviewer style content already, and so instead of adding to the glut, I'll just stick to what I know:

Dicking around :D

Now enjoy... or DON'T!

My one year anniversary: I did a bunch of traveling and met a bunch of Dtoiders whilst doing so. Here's my one year anniversary/travel summary audio c-blog.

Other work: I also write for a site called Negative Gamer which was started by Wardrox. It's super cool and full of dinosaurs. RAWR!

Destructoid Cards

I've made many a card for many a Dtoider after getting the idea from a forum thread in which Atheistium posted a template and a challenge. Currently I'm a little too busy with school/work/fighting enemies of truth and justice to make more, but I'll get another batch out eventually. Here are links to all my Dtoid card posts!

Ever since I started doing the Destructoid cards en mass, people have been asking how you actually USE them, and this is the part where I have to break some bad news to you.

You can't use them to play any game that I know of.

Yet.

Here's the deal: I started this project because I have a month where I've got more free time than I've ever had before (no job, no school and nearly all of my friends have moved to other cities) so I figured that I'd make myself a card to add to the pile on the forum. Blehman then asked me to make one, followed by FooLiz, and so I went ahead and did them. Then I figured "aw, what the hell. I may as well see if anyone else wants one." So I put up a c-blog entry and a forum post saying that I would make cards on request, thinking I would get maybe a dozen responses max.

Apparently I was wrong.

The point of this story is that all of this started without any kind of master plan. There was no idea to begin with other than to make funny cards for the community (and I actually thought that even once I started I'd burn out after a day or two, hence why I kept telling people that I wasn't promising anything in the first couple of booster pack entries), but now that it seems like I'm going to see this thing through I would most certainly LOVE to see these cards used for an honest to God actual game.

Unfortunately, there are two major problems...

1) I'm working in a limited time frame. I MIGHT be able to make it through almost all of the cards before I leave for Zambia for the rest of the summer (where I'll be much busier), but the amount of time needed to actually come up with a rule set and balance all 70-100 or so cards (currently 37 are posted, 41 are completed) to the point of playability would likely just be too much for me.

2) I've never played a CCG in my entire life. There, I said it. I do know how to create plasmids and express and analyze proteins, but those skills don't exactly help here. If I came up with a rule set it would likely be broken and I wouldn't know it because I'm totally unfamiliar with how to make a fun CCG, or even a mildly amusing CCG.

I'll sum those problems up for ya'll in a slightly shorter form.

1) I am but a man and likely won't have the time to make a rule set.

2) I'm an idiot.

What this means is that I'm asking for help from the community. I need someone that knows card games that can come up with a rule set, I need beta testers to try the game out over and over again, until it's at least playable and most importantly: I need copious amounts of drugs, wine and women.

WARNING: SERIOUS BUSINESS AHEAD

Now, how is this going to work?

Making The Rules

Now because I'm sure that everyone and their dog has ideas for how to make a playable game, I'm going to ask that instead of flooding the comments with ideas, you just work out amongst yourselves who wants to take on the rules, and if there's multiple people, then you guys need to figure out if all of you want to work together or what. At the end of the day we're looking for ONE rule set people, don't forget that. Only get into this if you are serious about finishing the job; the community deserves a quality game.

I have all of the .psd files, so going back and changing anything, and I do mean ANYTHING, on the old cards will be really quick. I could probably edit them all in a day depending on the changes. So the first thing that's needed is a basic outline of play so that I know what to add/change on the card template (resistance symbols, card classes etc.). Once that's been decided, then it'll be the hard part: crunching the numbers for each card and deciding on the ability effects since many of them, like Tophers "everyone dies instantly" abilities, just aren't practical.

But they're funny right? :D

Remember to think fun, not complicated. This game will most likely be a NARP only thing, so it's not like people are going to be practicing a whole bunch. The way I see it we want anyone to be able to come to the party, pick up some cards and play.

Once a rule set has been come up with and the cards have been edited, we can start testing.

Beta Testing

STOP! Don't do it! Don't flood the comments asking to be a beta tester, it just won't be helpful. If all of the above mentioned work gets done, I'll/we'll come around looking for help. Until there's a game there certainly won't be any testing, so chill.

Project Leadership/Purpose

This was never my project. I may have started making lots of cards, but this stuff was around before I was, all I did was take the idea and run with it. There are many people in this community that are both more talented and funnier than I am and I would love to have them working WITH me. That's the key here: anyone that wants to really make a go of this with my help needs to come into it with the mentality that it's a community project for the community and thus it's open to additions by anyone.

ANYONE.

The only thing I want to do here is make a good base set of cards that can be used with a cohesive rule set. What everyone does with the cards etc. from there is up to them.

Finished product

Some people brought up printing the cards off, laminating them and selling them at a profit.

No.

Let me say it again.

No.

Why?

For one reason: some of these cards use commercial art and I would be liable to be sued unless I either redesigned most of the cards or got permission to use the stuff, which would mean royalties to be paid. For another: that's not why I started doing this. Want to print out the cards yourself and laminate them? Go for it. Want to use them on your myspace? Go right ahead! Want to print them out, pee on them and then light them on fire because you hate my cards? It's your God given RIGHT to be able to do so.

Just don't even fucking think about making money with anything that I've created. My stuff is meant to be free and to be shared.

That would go for any card game that I would work on too. Don't like that? Then don't work with me.

Lamination costs of decks etc., if the project actually gets that far, would probably need to be paid for via donations by the community, or (far more likely) by individuals covering the cost to make their own decks themselves.

Yeah, I'm a commie apparently. Who knew?

If No One Wants To Do It

Then I'll just make 'em for the lulz and to possibly get laminated and passed out at PAX (CTZ suggested that he might do this so that everyone in attendance could get a copy of their own card). I've got no problem with that, it's just that it would be mighty nice to turn this project into something much greater.

Regardless of what happens, I'm having a lot of fun making these cards and it's actually sorta become part of my routine. They don't usually take very long (although some take longer than others if I can't think of anything funny, or can't find good source images, or can't get a good color balance etc.) and I find myself doing them when I would normally be playing videogames, which is actually probably a better use of my time when you think about it (I've learned quite a bit about both Photoshop and the community and I'm constantly having to think up "creative" solutions for the various aspects of these cards).

What I'm Actually Trying To Say

I need help designing the rules.

Now you tell me Destructoid: do you want to do this, or don't you? :)

My head, this is over it. I say go for it though. Also, you should stretch that last pic out and use it for the backs of the cards.
GHost, I'd actually love to see the cards you make turned into a playable game. I really do like the concept of making a community card game, and it could supply a lot of fun. But, I think you'd have to make up an objective to the game before making up the rules.

Just an idea: Make the card game setup like the D-toid community blogs, and the point of the game is to be the top on the leader board. At the beginning, you pick a user card, and with the user card comes bonuses... Give me a bit and I'll try to draw something up for the community.

Also, if I beg, can I get a card too?
You said you can make plasmids.

I want incinerate right now.
I guess I should have said this as well: I'm trying to make sure that all Dtoiders with a significant presence on the site get cards, so that would most certainly include yourself Mr. Juggy. :)
Wait, you make plasmids? Screw a card, make me something that lets me shoot razor out of my face.

I know you're talking about a different kind of plasmid but I can dream dammit.
Those cards are based on the Pokemon card game.
That game was kind simple. I used to pla it, a lot.
I can try a rule compendium tonight, or saturday.
Ghost

Im good at creating 3D stuff, but I don't know if I would have the time to help out. My Mega Model Post have slowed down to a snails pace.
@Dr. Nutt, Shipero and anyone else that wants a plasmid that makes you into a killing machine.

I just need to do a bit more science and then they'll be ready. Science is hard work after all! :D

@Breksher

Sounds great man, flesh out how it could happen and let me know. I'm hoping we get a couple of proper proposals for the rules out of this.
LOL, one of jugs powers could be capitilization opposition.
I'm trying to make sure that all Dtoiders with a significant presence on the site get cards

Aww... I'll try to draw up some rules anyway.
Look at you, you're talking when there's science to do.
@Teta

Thanks! The more ideas the better :D
Oh I wish I could come up with some rules. But echochrome made my head explode so I can't think of anything lately.
I'm insignificant, but this still sounds neat.
Am... am I significant? D:
How to play the Destructoid CCG: Get drunk and everything will make sense.
I agree with Knives, let's not overthink this.
I nominate Conrad Zimmerman for all things games- and rules- related.
I've asked HOW DO YOU PLAY so many times because... I can help you.

My brother and his friend have over 300 cards in a set he created and I helped design called "People We Know". It's loosely based off Magic the Gathering, but focused more on FUN, and less rules.

For instance, you tap "memories" (one time we had a great beach weekend... thats a card) and some are worth more, some give different characters buffs. Then there are some cards that boost certain types of characters, so for instance "unholy strength of Quentin" (a mentally challenged guy that beat up a kid once) can be applied to other characters that have at one time diplayed rage outside their usual characteristics.

email me rockvillian.dtoid@gmail.com and I'll show you what I mean.
@Knives

I tried that the other night, it only got more confusing.

Still really fun though :D

@Maxvest

I would love to see Conrad come up with something, we'll see if he wants to I guess.

@Everyone contemplating their significance in the universe/Destructoid

It's not that people that aren't editors or don't have a million comments won't get cards, it's just that I'm going to focus on those people since I've got a limited amount of time to do these in.
Make a flash game where the cards basically run around shooting lasers at each other. Pew pew pew!
But yes over thinking this will ruin the magic, but a happy medium could be cool, if you pulled it off. I'd be stoked to play a CBlog card game.
knives speaks the truth

It may help to make the rules while drunk as well
As long as someone puts in drinking as a rule I'm in!
@Teta

the cards do look like pokemon cards, which would make an easy set of rules. Maybe instead of different types of energy cards there could be plasmid cards/weapon cards?
Email Rockvillian! His creative juices are what epic is made of.

Also can't wait to see more and cross my fingers i show up.
@MaxVest: Umm... *shifts eyes and runs far, far away*

I'll try to start thinking of some ideas to help out with this, but I'm almost certain Knives has the right idea there. I like the cards being for lulz and trying to re-invent them in a playable form appeals to me significantly less. Of course, I also haven't seriously played a trading card game in almost ten years (though I may be reviewing one in two weeks), so my opinion is probably a touch jaded.
Haha or you could make the game more like Munchkin, which is pretty much the funniest card game ever.
I got a bad feeling that there's going to be major balancing issues with some of the cards.

Looks like I got to get me some significant internet presence..... do you think I'll find some if I rape enough really tall people?
I'm ranked #100 as of today... so I should slide right in :D I've got lots of down time at work, I'll see if I can't think of something.
I think we should just make up our own rules while playing it, interpreting the game in the funniest way we can when we do. For instance, if Atheistium doesn't have pheonix-blood to do a joint attack with, someone has to be pheonix-blood, etc.
@Everyone suggesting a less than serious rule set

BLASPHEMY! I USED A SERIOUS BUSINESS PICTURE!!!!!111!

For reals though, like I said in the blog: they're your cards. If you can think of a game to play with them as-is then by all means go ahead and do it, I'd be delighted to hear that people are doing that. I'd just like to make these into a proper (but not serious or complex) game, but that's just me.

BTW, I'm never changing the Kyle Gamgee ability to force all players to lose their shirts and pants, and drinking will be worked in somehow, I guarantee it :D.
Also, lol @ Ninja junk in that pic.
The only card game I've ever played was muchkin and that wasn't a collectable card game... But it was awesome.
@Nintendoll
Yeah that was what i was thinking.
Just categorize the cads in for example 5 groups. Make damage numbers somehow even, and we have a working game.
I swear I will try to post an adaptable rule set tonight, it just depends on thr amount of work that drops on my shoulders this afternooon.
Alright... this NEEDS to be a drinking game, and I have a ruleset for that.

Each player starts with a deck of a minimum of 50 cards and a six pack of beer. The six pack is your life, and the first player to get drunk or run out of beer loses. I have a much more detailed rules set outlined, but I wanted to see what everyone thought of the game being a game focusing on drinking before going forward.
Ghost:

I just PM'd you the in-depth rules I've put together as of now.
@DynamicSheep

Cool, I'll go over them now. Thanks man.
wait...I hope I'm significant? ...
Well, I wouldn't say I'm a CCG afficianado of any sort, but I did used to play Magic: The Gathering in my youth, and I always liked that system over pokemon.
I was thinking something along the lines of Comments would be mana, a la lands in magic, and I'd have to agree with Brecksher, being themed on the cblogs would be really appropriate, although, I like the 6 pack being your life suggestion too :D
Why you going to Zambia?
Sample Cards

Character
DynamicSheep - Cost to play: 1 TOID + 3 AJPGs Drink limit of 8

Ability: Rules Master (4 TOIDs + 5 AJPGs + 1 FTW) - DynamicSheep makes the rules to this game, and as a result uses a rules exploit to make all character cards and players do a ten count.

Event
Beer Run - Cost to play: 1 TOID + 2 FTWs
Ability: Target player goes and gets you a beer. (You pay all costs associated with procuring said beer.)
@Eschatos

I'm going there to teach anatomy and physiology to Nurses at the University of Zambia as well as do some public health care stuff.
As long as my card is ranked AWESOME, then I'm down with whatever. Someone should make this into a video game. If I knew how to do that, I would totally do that. Someone want to teach me how to do that? No? Okay.
@The Ghost

What's on the back of these cards?
More win.
I'd love a card myself, though I know it's not a great time to ask, given the other requests, and that I'm not as present/visible on the site as many others.

Regardless, I'd be happy to help design the rules to the game. I've played plenty of M:tG in my day, though I've long since given it up. But I've been exposed to some of the others out there, and I think I'd be a good member of a small team working on it.
Drop me a line if you'd like me to help out!
Beside character cards, there should also be spell or effect cards... Like "ZERO POST" or "This belongs in the forums". I really like the idea of it being based around the leaderboards/cblogs/front page comments. As many Dtoid memes should get slipped in as possible. I have zero talent, but I'd be happy to help in any way I can.
If we come up with a ruleset that is relatively simple I should be able to make it into a game, would be a nice break from working on Tower Defense.
As far as getting the cards printed, I know that Staples does this like "Business Cards in Minutes" thing, and you can get business card punch-outs plenty of places, if you could get them set up to the right dimensions printing them onto business cards would be pretty easy and bad-ass.
