About Me
Way back in the day, 8th grade to be precise, I was sitting in my English class reading a Game Informer when I was struck by an epiphany: there are people who get paid to play video games.

From this point forward I was on a quest, an epic journey if you will, one that would rival any Final Fantasy. I wanted to be a video game journalist.

I set my sights on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for a degree in journalism, and got my foot in the proverbial door by becoming the video games reviewer (and occasional columnist) for the student newspaper The Daily Nebraskan.

It is my hope that after completing my education I can return to my native state of Minnesota, but in the end I just want to work where ever I can get paid to rant about video games.

I don't expect to become a professional game-ranter out of sheer luck. So, I am very open to comments and criticisms, just keep them constructive. "ZOMG u r teh suX0rs!" just isn't helpful.

Until then, The Dude abides.

GBA / DS games: what are your favorites?
The Dude | 5:10 PM on 12.02.2007 24 comments

I'm taking a semester abroad soon, and since its been so long since I've given my GBA a real work out, I'm going to brink that along. I might pick up a DS as well. The question is: What are the MUST HAVE games for both systems?

I'm a fan of RPGs, action/adventure (zelda and the like) and anything thats simply a great game.

So, destructoid community: what are your favorites?

[EDIT] Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I think I have a good start here, but feel free to keep them coming.

For GBA:

Gunstar Super Heroes is a must. (I say that because not nearly enough people bought it who should have.)

Besides that, Mario & Luigi, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, the Final Fantasy ports, Golden Sun, WarioWare Twisted, and a Pokemon game of your choice.

For DS:

Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, Kirby Canvas Curse, Tetris DS/Planet Puzzle League, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, and Metroid Prime: Hunters. Plus, a Pokemon game.

I'm sure there's a lot more, but that's what comes to mind off the top of my head.

As far as GBA rpgs, I would definitely recommend both Golden Sun games and the Fire Emblem games.

As someone mentioned, Golden Sun is one of the best rpg's you can get if you have a GBA. In fact you should've already played it. The only problem is that they didn't make a 3rd game to finish the triology. Maybe they will one day, but we can only hope.

also, I just got a gameboy micro and I love it. I realize I think there are more old gba games I play than older ds games.

Sonic Battle doesn't fall into what you said, but get it. It is the best GBA game there is, no doubt.

The first two Mega Man Battle Network games are great. Haven't played anything after them, so I would know about the rest of the series.

@ BahamutZero

GB Micro launched at a poor time and never got the respect it deserved. I've had mine for over a year and I love it.

I spent around 400 hours in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire.
Castlevanias, Metroids, and Final Fantasies are what took up most of my time after Pokemon. Also, Astro Boy: Omega Factor.

Feel the Magic is what made me not regret buying my DS.
Also, Electroplankton.

*Nintendo helicopters circle over Goei's house....

I pretty much agree with everything in the above lists.

I've really enjoyed:
GBA:
Minish Cap

DS:
Phantom Hourglass
Phoenix Wright 1-3
Picross
Hotel Dusk
New Super Mario Bros.

If you're travelling an R4 is a really good thing. But, IMO, if you really like games be sure and actually buy them at some point rather than just "steal" them...

Sorry for the triple post, but I would like to suggest that when you have enough DS games you should definitely pick up one of these DS game card cases from Penguin United. The case holds up to 24 DS game cards, and it is about $11. Here is a pic:
