holy shit that's quite a question. give me a minute
for gba, off the top of my head:
racing gears advanced
gunstar super heroes
astro boy omega factor
every advance wars game
every fire emblem game
every robot taisen game
doom 2
every super mario game
ever sonic game
klonoa
super puzzle fighter
FF remakes up to six
breath of fire 2
golden sun 1 and 2
Mario and luigi superstar saga (MUST OWN)
wario land 4
for ds, off the top of my head
mario 64
warioware
mariokart
advance wars
magnetica
tony hawk american wasteland (really fun if you like thawk)
metroid prime hunters
big brain academy / brain age
magnetica
mario and luigi partners in time
new super mario bros
sonic rush
metroid spinball
meteos
puzzle league
yoshis island ds
puyo pop
elite beat agents
kirby canvas curse
both castlevania games (add the ones from gba as well)
konami crazy racers
phantom hourglass
For GBA:
Gunstar Super Heroes is a must. (I say that because not nearly enough people bought it who should have.)
Besides that, Mario & Luigi, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, the Final Fantasy ports, Golden Sun, WarioWare Twisted, and a Pokemon game of your choice.
For DS:
Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, Kirby Canvas Curse, Tetris DS/Planet Puzzle League, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, and Metroid Prime: Hunters. Plus, a Pokemon game.
I'm sure there's a lot more, but that's what comes to mind off the top of my head.
GBA: Advance Wars, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, WarioWare: Twisted, Boktai, Chu Chu Rocket
DS: Mario Kart DS, Phoenix Wright, Kirby: Canvas Curse, Feel the Magic, WarioWare: Touched, Elite Beat Agents, Jump Super Stars (possibly Ultimate, but I haven't really played it much), Advance Wars
I agree with most that already out but contra 4 is good, I liked hotel dusk also.
As far as GBA rpgs, I would definitely recommend both Golden Sun games and the Fire Emblem games.
Some good GBA games:
fire emblem games
any Final Fantasy game
if you can find it Tactics Ogre
all the castlevanias
secret of mana is good also
and anything else listed in this thread
DS games I like:
metroid is always good
so it Final Fantasy
Advanced Wars is fun
Phoenix Wright is by far one of the best series on the ds
Glory Days 2
Front Mission if you like mechs..
i cant think of anything else that hasnt already been said
btw where you going abroad to?
Tetris DS is really really addictive. It will last you a long time.
Also Elite beat agents is great.
Hotel Dusk and Phoenix Wright. Awesome games.
Pokemon, it´s a damn good RPG.
And i am really serious with my post.
The forums are that way »
As someone mentioned, Golden Sun is one of the best rpg's you can get if you have a GBA. In fact you should've already played it. The only problem is that they didn't make a 3rd game to finish the triology. Maybe they will one day, but we can only hope.
also, I just got a gameboy micro and I love it. I realize I think there are more old gba games I play than older ds games.
Sonic Battle doesn't fall into what you said, but get it. It is the best GBA game there is, no doubt.
The first two Mega Man Battle Network games are great. Haven't played anything after them, so I would know about the rest of the series.
@ BahamutZero
GB Micro launched at a poor time and never got the respect it deserved. I've had mine for over a year and I love it.
I spent around 400 hours in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire.
Castlevanias, Metroids, and Final Fantasies are what took up most of my time after Pokemon. Also, Astro Boy: Omega Factor.
Feel the Magic is what made me not regret buying my DS.
Also, Electroplankton.
Steal your DS games with R4DS
*Nintendo helicopters circle over Goei's house....
I pretty much agree with everything in the above lists.
I've really enjoyed:
GBA:
Minish Cap
DS:
Phantom Hourglass
Phoenix Wright 1-3
Picross
Hotel Dusk
New Super Mario Bros.
If you're travelling an R4 is a really good thing. But, IMO, if you really like games be sure and actually buy them at some point rather than just "steal" them...

Everything lusted in this thread is probably pretty win, but I'll throw in my recommended set of GBA/DS titles as well.
GBA:
Drill Dozer
Mother 3
Golden Sun 1 and 2
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town
Fire Emblem
Metroid: Zero Mission
WarioWare
DS:
Worms Open Warfare 2
Meteos
Ouendan 1 and 2
Planet Puzzle League
Pokemon Pearl or Diamond
Mario Kart DS
Tetris DS
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Jump Ultimate Stars
Also, "lusted."
I obviously meant listed...D:
Sorry for the triple post, but I would like to suggest that when you have enough DS games you should definitely pick up one of these DS game card cases from Penguin United. The case holds up to 24 DS game cards, and it is about $11. Here is a pic:
The Ds Games are very interesting...........
