I want to start off by saying I am obsessed with Magic. I go almost every friday to Friday Night Magic to hang out with friends and test for big tournaments. I constantly scour the internet to try and find the latest tech to bring to Pro Tour Hollywood.

So with that out of the way we can get to the meat n' potatoes of this blog. I want to know who in this community is familiar with Magic? Are you obsessed like me, or am I alone on this front? I think Magic compliments gaming very well because of the atmosphere of the stories as well as the great community of Magic.
I love this game and I am proud to say I've spent way more money on Magic than I did on games within the last year. I'm having to change my pants every day I wake up and realize Pro Tour Hollywood is one day closer. So yeah I <3 Magic if ya couldn't already tell

Also, is anyone from Dtoid heading to Pro Tour Hollywood cuz if you are I'd like to meet the Dtoid community.

I play magic every week, but I vastly prefer playing limited to constructed, I just find it way too expensive and time consuming to try and keep up with the constructed Metagame.
Also, do you actually have pro points to play in the tour in Hollywood or are you just going down there to absorb some of the good players mojo?

I LOVE the game. I think its brilliant, addictive and involves fantastic strategy. Unfortunately it is also completely BROKEN due to its marketing strategy. The prohibitive cost of rare cards (the afore-pictured black lotus) keeping up with expansions, etc. make the game essentially unplayable for anyone unwilling to spend literally hundreds if not thousands of dollars on this one game. Unless you know enough people who are willing to play 'fairer' games (perhaps using only a certain era of cards that everyone has or something along those lines) or you're playing in one of those tournaments where you have to improvise (you get one starter and two expansions and have to make the best deck you can on the spot) the game just rewards wealth more than strategy. At those highest spending levels, sure, you will still have serious strategy at play but everyone who cannot spend that much might have the best strategy in the world but can never beat the guy with the $1000 deck.

I dont have any pro points and truthfully the best I've done in the game is getting 3rd at a Pro Tour Qualifier. However the day before the Pro Tour there is a last chance qualifier where the top 4 gets to play in the Pro Tour. If I suck at that then there are TONS of awesome side events with awesome prizes over the next three days.

While some of what you said is true I've been able to play competitively on the budget of a 16yr old with no steady job. The games tournament structure is also mainly tournaments involving the latest sets so you don't have to own the great, Expensive cards of the past. Yes the best decks are usually the most expensive, but I'd say you could build most competitive decks today for under 100-@50 dollars.

I used to play a lot but the town I am living in has no organized group so my cards have been sitting untouched for a while.

I don't play, but I've always wanted to. I bought a starter deck a long time ago, but had nobody to play with, so I kind of lost the cards. :/

If you have any recommendations on what someone new to the game should buy for starters, it would be appreciated, as I now have a few friends interesting in playing.

Also, do you know of a good way to play Magic on the computer (online or even against a computer, for learning purposes)? I downloaded Magic Online after reading something about a free server, but I couldn't find a way to access it if it exists.

i used to play a lot. every year, this time of year, i always get the urge to play because (no homo) i love playing outside on a nice day with a bunch of friends. I'm not really into the new sets, so that might hold me back from playing anytime soon.

All my physical cards are 12 years old. I played Magic Online about 2 years ago. I love it, but it takes more time/money than I'm willing to put into it. What about the rumor that it's coming to XBLA?

I played a bit, from the tail end of the Onslaught block to Time Spiral. I really hope they create a console franchise ala YGO. It'd be great to have a game compiling several blocks of cards for T2, Extended, or Classic.

I used to play a lot in 8th grade. I was pretty good too. I quit after Ice Age though. I just remember Fallen Empires being the crappiest expansion ever.

I love playing Magic and I go to alot of FNM tournaments even though I am terrible at drafting. I like the new Llorwyn and shadowmoor series, mainly because my best decks are made of cards from this series.

I friggin' love those Elementals.

I still play with my friends every week or so. Never tried any tournaments or anything like that, though.

the only good thing from fallen empires was the breeding pit, an essential card before lord of the pit is dropped. 7/7 flying trample ftw
