I'm Tenro, currently a college student in training to be a teacher, though it very rarely feels like it. Though I love games, comics will always be my true passion in geekdom (and most other things), and I often look for games that reflect some of the things that I appreciate in the comics I read. I (sort-of) maintain a
comics-based blog that I try to update weekly.
Also, I'm a lucky enough man to have an equally geeky girlfriend, who can be found here on DToid as
FlonneMcNinja
When it comes to games themselves, usually I'm more of an RPG guy, but my first gaming love was the 2D fighter, and I'm the faithful sort. Also, the Devil May Cry/Godhand kind of 3D beat-'em-up often calls to me.
Since my old one broke, right now I don't own a PS2, but I still have all of my considerable stack (and occasionally add to it), and many of my all-time favorites are in that pile. I became a Nintendo guy when I wasn't paying attention, as I own both a DS and a Wii. I'd be perfectly happy with this setup, but I have the sinking feeling that I'm going to have to buy a 360.
Got-damn I got games right now. Final Fantasy IV, TWEWY, Guilty Gear Accent Core for Wii (better than it sounds in theory), Blast Works, and Samurai Showdown on VC (finally!) seem to be the big ones.
Looking forward to: Force Unleashed, Ghostbusters, TNA Impact and Perfect Prosecutor, and waiting on my Disgaea DS preorder.
It does look kinda generic, but at least it looks fun.
That, or it could be because it's Valve.
There, I said it.
If you haven't been part of a PC/xbox LAN or at least played a Co-op FPS with a friend, then you probably won't understand.
Also you wouldn't think the game is scary from watching videos, but if you are playing it in first person with zombies bearing down on you from all over, youl'd think different. The game looks very intensely paced, and my only worry is the controls are simple enough you can do everything you need to in a hurry.
And Valve is making it, they're riding high on a big wave of hype after the Overrated box.
Also, how can you tell what the controls are like from that video?
It's also Valve. Have you played all of the games in the Orange Box? Tell me which one of those games is bad so I can drop kick your throat.
:D
Looks like Crazy Addictive Twitch gaming....
( Mmmmmm! )
Now we just need a PS3 port........ !
: P
I'm not that excited about this game yet either but I must say it looks like a hell of a lot of fun
Also, don't judge a horror game from gameplay videos. Wait till you actually play and find yourself jumping out of your seat because of something you did not see coming. ;)
1. It's being made by Valve. Even if you're new here, everyone is singing the praises of the Orange Box, so you should understand our favoritism towards Valve.
2. It's a zombie game on the Source engine, and with traditional zombies. No, Half-Life 2 isn't a zombie game.
Maybe I'm just too easy...
I wouldn't call them completely traditional. Sure they're flesh-eaters, but the whole mutated-strain-of-rabies-makes-people-crazy thing is definitely a contemporary interpretation of the genre.
Look at the developer.
My comment on the controls was just a hunch I felt watching the video Sterling put up; it looked like the characters and their aiming were slippery.
@ZeroTolo: "No extra monsters that suddenly show up?" What would you call the ridiculously mutated zombie that looks like a monster gorilla? 'Cause I call it a sign that about halfway through the game Valve gets bored with good old fashioned zombies.
Also, you could learn everything you needed to know about this game by using Google. Try that first next time.
2. Like Hamza said there are no "triggers" in the game. It's run by an AI "director" that makes sure the zmobie placement and attacks are different everytime. It also gauges the teams tension which lets up on the attacks when it gets too high, and cranks it up if it gets too low.
3. You can also choose to play as one of the super zombies (like the boomer) and attack other human controlled players. There are like 4 or 5 different ones you can choose from and the game disperses them out based on the tension level to make sure the humans aren't getting spammed by super zombies all the time.
Based on your last comment, I think you have some misconceptions about the game. It doesn't have a campaign story mode or anything, it's meant to be played like a multiplayer match except it's co-op and the objective is to survive through the level.
Also, Mxyzptlk & GuitarAtomik: Good call. I needed more info.
I used the term traditional for the fact that, for all intents and purposes, the superzombies were still human. Nothing like in Resident Evil with the Hunters or anything like that.
1 - Up to 4 player co-op against either AI directed enemies or additional, user controlled super-zombies.
2 - Procedural levels: different path to a randomly placed objective every time.
3 - AI director controlled enemies gives users lulls (not LULZ!) in the battle to build tension and "intelligently" throws the waves of zombies at the enemy.
4 - Proper co-op, where you can help your friends up off the ground when they get injured, you can still fight when you've been knocked down and actual cooperation is important!
I think you just read "zombie game" and made assumptions about the rest. Mxy and GA were right to point you to more info.
