I bought the Orange Box today from Circuit City for only 40 bones
And the hate starts......................................................................................................................................................................................................... NOW
NERDRAGE!!!!!!
You might as well get the Orange Box since you're getting three complete games. I think most people who bought Orange Box already owned HL2 and Ep. 1, they're just giving it away.
Ain't no hate or nerdrage, just a concerned consumer.
It doesn't make sense to over-charge your pre-installed fanbase whilst opening the gates wide and dropping the prices for newcomers, that's all.
Way to completely misread everything. The orange box is for Ep2, Portal and TF2. That's 3 games for $45 ($50 if you didn't pre-order). Then to sweeten the deal, they throw in HL2 and Ep1, which you can give away if you already own them.
If you're going for the 360 version... that's a separate problem... but not one with HL, Portal, TF2, or anything else Valve does.
$50 for hl2 episode 2, tf2 and portal doesn't seem that bad too me.. maybe i'm just becoming completely jaded though.
Orange Box Gifts
Its true. I think the consumers are getting screwed, but are blinded by it in the proccess because of the two new games. I gaurantee they are making profit out the door.
"Ain't no hate or nerdrage, just a concerned consumer."
Or Jewish Normalism
really???? they are making a profit!?@??@ HOW DARE THEY
You're an idiot, Orange Box is the deal of the century. If you buy them separately you're just a douche.
Oh of course, as only idiots buy all the games they like.
So I shouldn't have bought HL2 three years ago? I should've waited eh? I shouldn't have bought Episode One for $19.99 on pre-load day?
I don't think so. I don't want to give games away to people either, I'd rather be charged less because I don't want/need them. That's just a shit excuse for not catering to your customers needs.
There should be an update pack for a more reasonable amount of cash without silly "giveaway" schemes which aren't relevant to certain folk.
Who doesn't have HL2 nowadays?
i don't...well, at least not until i leave work today and hit up best buy
Temp::
It's called a DEAL for a reason. Either way you're getting more games than you should for that price. If you dont like it then dont buy it.
You have to know at least one friend that has a PC that can run HL2 but never bought it. just buy the orange box and give them HL2 and Episode 1.
And like others have said, you pay $50 for Orange Box which also includes TF2, there more bang for your buck right there.
The orange box is Portal, HL2: Episode 2, and Team Fortress 2. Team Fortress 2 is easily worth the 50 bucks on its own. Forgive me if I cannot comprehend what your problem is.
I bought the $100 Half-Life 2 over Steam before it was released that included tons of extra shit. I then bought Episode One, now I'm buying Orange Box. I have no problem with this at all. I will sell or giveaway my extra copies.
If it isn't worth it to you then don't buy it, it's that simple.
This will be blasphemous to some of you but ...
I'm not a fan TF or Enemy Territory or any team-based game like that. My online fragging games are Q3 E+ and HL2DM.
All I want is Portal and EpTwo, as was posted everywhere on the intarwebs prior to it's release.
There are games that looked fun that I didn't buy because I felt they cost too much. Do you know what I did? I didn't buy it. Feel free to do the same.
And I got Peggle Extreme as well...which is short but awesome. Have you even PLAYED Team Fortress 2? If not, how do you know if you like it or not? I hated Team Fortress Classic and Quake Wars but I love Team Fortress 2. Also, stop whining. These are Destructoid blogs...for cool shit. This isn't a LiveJournal.
Yes I have PLAYED TF2 - hence knowing I don't like it. That's what I was doing this afternoon with a friend who did buy teh orange box because it was good value to him.
So nobody wants to even question why the price of an episode has gone up by $10 when the whole point of episodic gaming was to keep the price low and the games frequent?
Is anybody awake or are you all just staring at portals?
EpTwo was advertised as being with Portal. Why isn't anybody remotely interested in this point?
Finished dictating Shadow?
To be honest, I can see the man's point. The Orange Box is a stonker of a deal for folks like me who have somehow missed out on HL2 for this long, but considering that most of Valve's fanbase is already going to have HL2 and Ep. 1, I really can't understand why they dropped The Black Box.
Yeah of course you can give a couple of games away, but I can totally understand being pissed at having to pay a higher cost for a box set with a two "free" games I'd already paid for. They're not free bonuses if you've already got them.
The Black Box was supposed to be $40 remember? Having to now pay $60 to buy what was originally advertised as $20 cheaper does rather take the piss, as does a 5 hour game retailing at $30, which as Tempus rightly points out, is a joke when you consider what episodic gaming was originally sold as.
When was the original quote said? They had planned to release Black Box, which would have taken out HL2 and HL2 episode 1. They also axed that. Plans change. Unless that quote was said yesterday it has no weight.
What advertisement are you even citing. I've never heard of them giving away portal with ep2. It's always been either the Orange Box or the Black Box. The only thing that changed is that instead of paying $5-10 less for the black box, you get to give away a 20-40 value within the package. If you don't feel like giving them away, enjoy your pile of gold. The rest of us will enjoy being generous, and not minding eating the cost of a game you were going to buy anyways.
Ep2 costing more than ep1: point? Newer game. Newer technology. Longer game. It's still cheaper than a full retail console game, by a lot. Seems like episodic gaming. The time issue is something that Valve is looking into, but I personally don't mind a few years for some pretty good stuff, rather than another 6 years for 1 more game.
But to each his own. Quit your bitching and go play something else. Like Shadow said, this isn't live journal. Destructoid blogs and cool shit ftw!
Episode 2 was never advertised as being "bundled with Portal". What you're thinking about is the Black Box, which was TF2, HL2E2, and Portal, which was never priced. When they solidified the console versions, they standardized the package, and priced it significantly lower than they could have. It's a solid deal.
For console owners, it's one of the best buys of the year. For PC owners, it's still a pretty nice deal considering all of these games are fucking phenomenal. Sucks that you don't like 'em, but you don't often find people complaining about the retail price of games they don't care for, do you?
The reasons I see for raising the cost of Episode 2 in comparison to Episode 1:
-It is longer than Episode 1.
-It is includes serious Source engine graphical upgrades such as real-time shadows, an expanded HDR option, etc.
-It offers as much game play as some $50 or $60 games anyway.
-More than likely it had higher production costs.
Those are three facts, and one possibility of why it's more expensive. If you don't find them valid, fair enough. I think very few people are buying Episode Two all on its own so I think that such a small amount of people are affected that it really doesn't matter. Why bring out a whole different SKU for a small portion of your audience? That's just bad business and a waste of money. Plus GameStop didn't want to carry multiple SKUs for one game, and I doubt EA wanted to publish multiple SKUs. It would also confuse customers (I know they're stupid, but the majority of people are stupid and they want to make their money). That is no excuse for the PC's Steam-bought versions though. I just think in the end that it wasn't worth the hassle. I vaguely see your point but I really think if you look at the big picture it makes sense and isn't anything to get upset about.
Half Life 2: Episode 2 is still longer than Heavenly Sword. BOOM! I went there.
