Best Buy's Epic Game Sale Leads to Disappointment
TeknoDwarf | 8:00 PM on 04.26.2009 30 comments

So a buddy and I made the trek to our local Best Buy in the early afternoon, hoping to score some games from their $10 bargain bin sale. We go there to find that the box was half empty and all of the good games were already snatched. Being persistent, we continued rummaging through the bin multiple times hoping something would show up or wait for the good games to “respawn.”

There were plenty of copies of Rock Revolution, The Golden Compass, and The Bourne Conspiracy. Additionally, there were various sports games that neither of us could really give a damn about. Eventually, we conceded but came up with a great idea to gift each other for our birthdays. His was this past Friday, while mine would be coming up this Monday. He grabbed Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 from the regular shelf that was priced at $15 and I decided to get him The Bourne Conspiracy and Supreme Commander for $20. I told him I’d play DOAX2, but wouldn’t be caught dead buying it, lest I be perceived as a pervert.

He then proceeded to Tweet, “Doesn’t mind looking like a pervert while buying DoAX2.” With my response “Glad I’m not a pervert for buying DoAX2.

In the end, we didn’t come out of Best Buy empty-handed, but we did come out broken-hearted.

I was at Best Buy this morning at 11AM when they opened up, and I was able to score 2 copies of Soul Caliber 4 on the PS3 for $10 a piece, and a copy of Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword for the DS for only $10. I really wanted Devil May Cry 4 for the XBOX360, but someone grabbed the last copy right before I got to it. ALl in all I left very very happy. Now I just have to decide who to give the extra copy of Soul Caliber 4 to ...

@silver - sell it on Ebay, you could net a good 20 buck of profit!

Dang, I didn't even go to Best Buy at all.
Oh well, better luck next year.

I got to the store less than an hour after opening, and none of the games I wanted were there. Disappointed, i walked out. On my way to the front of the store, I ran into a guy with at least (literally) ten games in his hands. I joked with him, saying "doing some shopping." It wasn't until I got a glimpse of what games he was carrying did I truly get disgusted. He had a bunch of the sale games, for multiple consoles. He had a few 360 games and PS3 games. He even had TWO copies of Overlord PS3. What was obviously happening was that people were waiting in line outside for the store to open and then proceeded to buy all the good games to either sell on eBay or give to his friends who may or may not had paid him before or asked for him to get them while he was there. Most likely the former.

Next time a sale like this goes on, I'm getting there early.

I went to best buy 2 hours after it opened to get Silent Hill.

They were sold out except for one that a friend of mine (an employee) was holding for herself. I smoothed talked it out of her. So I snatched the last one.

I managed to find Pure for 360. I wanted to get Condemned 2 but no stores had it. Picked up Alone in the Dark as well for no good reason.

I didn't bother, I already knew what was gonna happen, bunch of scalpers would go wait in line hours before they open to grab up everything they could fit in the basket just to go sell them all on ebay for 2 to 3 times the price they paid. Can't say I blame them though, it sickens me but its a good way to make some money. Best buy should of put a limit on how many you could buy per person but I'm sure then they would of just brought friends.

I went 20 minutes early, but on accident (I couldn't remember when the store opened). There ended up being about 10 other people, a few of which did the stereotypical zerg rush to get some mad loot, even though we all got what games we wanted (I got Pure and Silent Hill).

Everyone else seemed rad enough, and I even had a pretty good discussion with one couple while we waiting for the doors to open. Definitely beats the hell out of waiting for a console to launch, I'll tell you that much.

I had my grandmother go to a BB this morning while I was at work. Was hoping to get Blitz 2, Quantum of Solace and Warhammer: Battle March. She was able to find Blitz but the other 2 they were sold out of.

I'm heading up to another one tomorrow but to be honest I'll be shocked if they have anything other than copies of The Golden Compass and the Naked Brothers Band.

I would have gotten that. Too bad I don't live near a Best Buy though, because I would have been at one in a second.

The Bourne game isn't that bad.

And most best buys where cleaned out by scalpers.

I didn't see any of the $10 games left by the time I got there at around 2 in the afternoon.

I wasn't there for those games, so I wasn't disappointed, but I was surprised to see that. Seems like they just threw out the "sale" sign to get people in the door.

Wal-Mart will price match the ad if you still want the games for cheap. Just bring the best buy ad to wal-mart and you should be able to get the same games for $10 there as well.

usually there's never anything good in those bins. Just bins full of lost hopes and dreams that will never formulate into fruition.

@chronoswing

do you know if they only match whats on the add itself or can you bring on the ad and the list? Most places say the item in question has to be on the ad in order to price match.

I just said "fuck it" and slept in. I already have more than enough games to keep me busy for a while.

I went to 3 different fucking locations. The first one I picked up Pure. Second one I picked up Condemned 2. Then I finally found Unreal 3 at the last one I went. This last Best Buy had Oddworld:Stranger Wrath for $10, I already have it but got anyway because you just don't see that kind of shit.

I got to Best Buy right when they opened. There were about 6 other people in the 360 aisle. One guy had a stack of 10 games...spotted Golden Compass and Too Human in his pile. He was on the phone with his friend, complaining about all the people buying "crap" games. Seriously dude? You have a stack of them right there...

Sounded like his friend was at another BB, as he kept saying "yeah, that's not here, grab it". He also kept walking and standing in front of people. I really wanted to punch him...but I had my son with me.

What also sucked was that I overheard one of the employees say they didn't have a lot of the games that were listed on the sale.

I went in looking for Silent Hill and DMC4; came out with Hellboy (a friend of mine bought it and told me to grab it if I saw it so we can try co-op) and Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3. C&C was sitting by the cashier, and after confirming it wasn't being held for anyone, I bought it. It was mostly due to the fact that I was hoping to come out with 3 or 4 games, making it an "ah, fuck it, I'll buy it" purchase.

I had a feeling it would turn out this way. Either the stores didn't have that many of these titles to begin with or there are "professional ebayers" there in line waiting to grab them all. I understand BBY wanted to get rid of some stock but a limit 1 or 2 of each title per customer might have helped.

@Onomelon

Well I haven't checked but doesn't the BB ad list all the games that are on sale for $10?

@Chronoswing

The newspaper BB ad only shows 4 or 5 games for each system. I know for the 360, they had Infinite Undiscovery and Devil May Cry 4.
