About Me

Hi! I'm Will (or Technophile, or Techno, or Tech or that guy).
The forums are a damn cool place and you should check them out!

I live in LA and I work in the gaming industry in community management.

and now some rambling:

Technophilia and technophobia are the two extremes of the relationship between technology and society. The technophobe fears or dislikes technology, often regarding some or all technology with fear. This may be as a consequences of fear of change, a prior catastrophic experience with technology or because it may lead to a process of dehumanization.

The technophile sees most or all technology as positive, adopting technology enthusiastically, and seeing it as a means to potentially improve life and combat social problems. A technophile will choose technology above other methods rather than rationally selecting the best tool for the job.

All right. It's about time I hunkered down and committed to this.

It always confused me that a gaming site as big as we are has almost no MMO representation. I know there is some of you that play. In fact, it seems like Brad Nicholson seems to like MMOs quite a bit and I know Jonathan Ross plays them from time to time as well.

I figured I would start with the biggest MMO out there (and the one I'm playing) so why not.

Since I'm sure those of you that play are probably scattered across a bunch of servers, I figure we should get the two most important parts of getting this started out of the way.

Server and Side.

I play on Kilrogg. It's one of the original servers, so it's got a solid player base but it's not so crowded that there is a queue every day. It's a west coast server as well. It's also a "Normal" server as I feel PVP servers tend to give license for people to be assholes.

I also play on Alliance side, although I perfer Horde. My 80 is Alliance, but I don't mind starting a new character.

So let's get that decision out the way first and get this ball rolling.

-----------------------

The points of having a guild is this (at least for me).

To have a group of players available to do group content (raids, dungeons, tough quests, pvp) and with the new expansion, all the guild specific accolades and stuff.

I've been playing WOW since launch. Off and on and I've never done a single Raid. Why? For a couple of reasons.

1. I can't seem to get a group of people together I like playing with. With my old guild on City of Heroes, I could only convince 3 of them to even try WoW. They had that "OMG wow is full of assholes and the game is stupid" mentality pounded into their heads and refused to try it. Outside of that, people I've played with just stop playing.

2. Nearly every group in game I've tried to get with were either completely unfriendly, (not mean, but just never talked to me or invited me to anything) Hyper competitive. (ZOMG l2pnub. UR gearscore sucks) or treated it like a second job (we raid 6 times a week, you are required to be in every raid for 4 hours a day).

So since most of you seem to be reasonable people. I figured here would be a perfect place to get a guild going. I want to try raids and get cool loot and see the story bits (bit of a lore nerd, sorry) but I don't want to leech all the fun out of it. I don't care about wiping a raid, I don't see the point in rage quitting just because you lost. I want better gear because that makes the harder stuff easier to do and not so I can wave my e-peen around. I want to try out having an arena team. I want to do more of the dungeons to see the epic boss fights.

I don't care if you've never played before or if you play all the time. I don't care if you know the best build for a fighter or if you don't even know what a fighter does. The learned can teach and the new people can learn.

So, if this sounds like something you would be interested in go ahead and let me (and us) know.

Man if this actually gets setup I would reconsider reactivating my account.

Oh trust me. It WILL get setup. I'm not one to balk on things. But I have to know it's worth setting up in the first place.

I would love to play this game.. but I fear the addiction. :(
(and the monthly fee)

Good idea to get a Dtoid guild going though!

Sorry mate, I don't play WoW. Even if I wanted to, I can't put aside for the monthly fee. Luck to you though.

I don't think it's a bad decision it'll definitely be great for those who can't get a decent raid group.

Man, should have totally talked to me months ago before I started playing with King3vbo! Also, non PvP server? It's world of WARcraft. Hurr. Good luck, though.

Had I money for the monthly fees and time for the nightly playing, I would be all over this in a heartbeat.

@Yashoki
yeah, I don't mind the concept of PVP servers. I just hate not being able to NOT pvp when I just want to get something done. That's more irritating then fun to me.

@Jesus H Christ
Um. Yes. Yes you are.

@Y0j1mb0
and that's the reason why I can never get a decent group of people playing. Because people seem to think wow=drooling crackhead. Yeah, there are a lot of people who play like that. That's their problem. Those are the people I explicitly want to avoid. Let me put it this way, you like playing fighting games right? Wouldn't it irritate you just a bit if every time you brought them up people starting calling you a "crackhead" and "so your marriage get ruined because you keep practicing for the evo tournament yet?" and so on and so forth?

A lot of my friends still play. Hopefully in about 12 months from now I'll have the free time, and you'll see me posting more and playing WoW. Sadly, if D3 is right around the corner by then . . . then yeah, it might be a while :)

I wouldn't expect D3 to be coming anytime soon. I have good (although off the record) word on that. unfortunately.

@Tech:

I have many friends who are WoW practitioners and have even lost many gaming friends due to WoW. It seems like a game that you can't just "chill" with. From my point of view of those I know who play it, it looks like a heavy investment (not monetary but time wise) needs to be doled out.

Then again, my friends may just be addicted easily to WoW and not representing the majority of WoW players. Either way, I didn't mean to hinder your recruitment of worthwhile Dtoiders with my comment. I wish you luck in your endeavor good man.

I don't play as much as I used to, but getting a regular group to roll with sounds like alot of fun! I've never REALLY played the horde and it this sounds like as good areason to get back into it as any.

Count me in! I've played alot of hunter, but I've really gotten into Paladin lately. I wouldn't mind doing horde, since I've only gone about 23 levels on anything on that side of the fence.

I would love to play an MMO in a dtoid guild, but I'll have to pass on WoW. :( Hopefully something can be put together for one of the upcoming MMOs, and I'll join in then. :)

Guild Wars is the way to go.

I say this because it's pretty much the only F2P MMO that isn't shit (besides Tibia).

If I played WoW, I'd join. But alas, I don't, in fact, I don't MMO's at all. Anyways, I would still like to read about fellow dtoider's adventures in WoW raiding.

I dont really play WoW but the idea of Dtoid MMO guilds is good. I think it would be cool if we set up a guild in Pangya When they get the guild support added. I know there are propably other people besides me who play Pangya here. Maybe I should make a thread about this in the forums?
Technophile's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/09/2009 02:42

@J-Ro You love the idea. Admit it.

@Y0j1mb0

I didn't mean to come off so defensive. It just kind of rubs me the wrong way every time I hear it. I've known those people too, out of the 12 million or so people playing the damn thing I'm sure there is quite a few that are a little TOO much invested in it. It's sad for them, but while I'm not going to deny that the game takes a LONG time to progress in (as opposed to say a 40 hour rpg or the 10 hours that most games take) it is really satisfying. It's a game that never "ends" after all, so you can always come back to it.

@everyone else who mentioned other games.

That's what I'm hoping this will turn into. If we can show that we can get a good reliable guild together in something like WOW, hopefully that will inspire others to get a Star Trek guild going or a KOTOR or whatever is out there.

@brainderailment: That cross-realm PVE is for random matchmaking groups only, unfortunately.

I'd suggest getting more dtoiders to join our already-dtoid-member-heavy guild, but I get the impression that you're going for something a little more 'official' here, Tech.

I play on Ravenholdt as Horde. Not for the supposed RP (because there isn't any that I can see, though admittedly I don't hang around Silvermoon) but mainly because I had a friend that was on there.

I do like the fact that there's world PVP though. I think it'd be utterly boring if Alliance and Horde just waved at each other and went on their merry way most of the time. It's also exciting to figure out ways to get the job done while avoiding or taking out the other guy.

Damn good Tech :)

It's nice to see WoW get some positive Dtoid attention. It seems to be that most people assume WoW is just hardcore raiders and nothing else, and then disregard it without a second thought. Which always makes me chuckle, as the game has become very casual-friendly now.

I'm assuming this will be on a US server correct? Shame, I'm Lightbringer on the EU side. But you guys have fun, keep us updated on your progress and such :)
