So... I'm a bit late to the game, but I finally got Street Fighter IV, and finally got to see what the fuss was all about with Seth....
I must admit, it's been a while since I've played a Capcom fighter, so I'm rusty, playing Soul Calibur or Tekken isn't the same, so I know I would have some trouble.
When I finally reached Seth, I was dumbfounded! He seemed IMPOSSIBLE to beat! It was the biggest struggle I had and at that moment I agreed that Capcom had gotten carried away and that Seth was the cheapest boss ever!
But then.... I found out that I had chosen the worst character to start with... Chun-Li! Apparently Seth is the anti-Chun-Li in the same way Mega Man is the anti-Wolverine!
He does have the cheapest move set, and he's super aggressive even in the easiest mode, yet....
Isn't this the norm for ALL Capcom fighting games?
I remember playing the original Street Fighter on a Capcom Collection on the PSP and Sagat could take half of your energy bar with his super move, so this "unbeatable" boss thing has been going on from the start!
The more I try to remember the more it seems true! Back in the Dreamcast era when Capcom fighters were at their best I remember that it was always the same, it takes a few moments to reach the boss and then you have to struggle and try to beat whoever the "unbeatable" boss was in that game and you almost never do it on your first try, or your second, or your 15th....
It's strange... I will admit his move set is the cheapest and he's too aggressive, yet... I doubt he's the cheapest boss in Capcom history, I was a much better player back in the Dreamcast era and the final boss took me AGES to beat... Now, I'm rusty and... I beat Seth with DAN HIBIKI on my FIRST TRY! I never manage that in other Capcom games unless the character I'm using is cheap! A part of me thing he does need tweaking, yet another thinks he's not the hardest boss I've fought.
It could do with the fact that it seems that in SFIV it's much more obvious when one character is the "anti" of another? There is always a character which is a struggle for which ever character you choose.

I had the worst time with Seth, since Chun Li is my main. However, I also didn't learn her crouching HP to Medium Spinning Star combo, which Seth is CRAZY vulnerable to.
I ass-handed Seth with Ken though.
But yeah, having stupid hard last bosses definitely isn't new in Capcom fighters. Its just been a while ,I reckon.
No; people who don't play the game much just complain.
In single player, you can either just rush-down him, or punish him when he completely misses with his attacks.
In multiplayer, he's not that great, as it's a dumbed down version. Waiting for De Bloo to weigh in as well :D
The closest character to "cheap" in SFIV is Sagat.
Just as I thought! I know I'm rusty and I wasn't that great of a Street Fighter player, but I know that I've fought worse!
While I feel Seth is a challenge he's nothing that a good amount of practice can't get you past. I also feel that the final boss in KOF XI was much cheaper than Seth. That was the firstt boss that made me want to throw a controller in a long time.
When I first started playing it, I had problems with Seth. But then you realize what all his moves are and what he's capable of, and he's easy.
I had some trouble with Seth the first few times in arcade mode, but that was because I was playing him like I would a human opponent. At a certain point, you just have to say "fuck it" and start sweeping the leg like Cobra Kai, among other cheap tactics.
everyone had problems with Seth from the start. But then you realize you can bait for his stupid setups and just outpoke him with anyone.
I don't play often so he pretty much kicks my ass.
Seth is vulnerable to low sweeps. But he isn't that hard. His AI is inconsistent though. One round he'll just stand there, and the next round he'll go all out.
There's a tactic to just use Ken, jump forward, sweep, let him rise, block, sweep, repeat.
But he is obviously a cheap and badly programmed character. I found him ridiculously hard on the easiest setting, yet the easiest on the hardest setting.
Stupid, I know.
I’ve never understood why they made him so hard. I mean I guess I understand for the arcade version where they want you to keep putting money in but there’s no need to frustrate me at home. I usually just quit after the rival fights.
The bad thing is I know I’m going to have to go through the whole thing again when SSF IV comes out.
No Seth is not hard at all. I even prove my point, set the game to the hardest mode and use Dhalism and press Fierce Punch. He'll die because the Ai is too stupid to counter back. Seth is also patheic compare to Gil.
@Handy,
ALL of the characters will be unlocked from the start. So no more grinding in SSFIV, unless it's for extra outfit colors or taunts.
@casualweaponry
Now that you mention it, it does seems like his AI changes between rounds!
yea the first round is the "Ima let you think you're good" round. 2nd round is where he starts actually fighting.
doesn't do the same in VH though lol.
just keep blocking low. he'll do some super punishable dumb shit then you just rock him with your fattest combo.
timing him out works too. haha but yeah if he teleports behind you just backdash to avoid the grab. dudes a bitch.
Seth has no penis. Remember that.
On the easeist setting, Seth can be defeated by mashing HK. With any character.
And when the AI is concerned, there are no "anti-characters". The AI isn't programmed to do things in specific ways against certain characters, they're just programmed to use basic strategies and never deviate from them. You lost as Chun-Li because you didn't know how to fight him, not because she performs poorly against him in player match-ups. It's like in Guilty Gear XX, Bridget has a positive matchup against Potemkin because he can lock Potemkin down with traps very easily, but I've never lost to an AI Bridget because the AI doesn't know HOW to lay Yoyo traps.
After a while I'm just like, "Fuck this guy, I just want to use [whoever]"
Well being that Dr.Manhattan + Gill = Seth. Yes, Seth is that bad.
Um, I like tekken.
He's not hard, he's just obnoxious as hell. His grabs and supers all have huge animations that take forever. He's easy to beat when you learn him, but he's still a pain in the ass to fight. Annoying asshole.
He's cheap in the way that SNK bosses are cheap, but the thing that saves Capcom from being absolute douches is that Seth also has a lousy AI. Once you discover that he's a sucker for throws and low sweeps, he ain't that bad.
But damn, he was a controller-destroying character the first time I faced him, simply because he had such an annoying moveset.
@Cartman All I said about Tekken is that it's a different kind of fighter, I don't remember saying anything bad against that game?
@Mandarin Haggis
I've been using low sweeps with most characters, but he always seems to grab me before I can grab him...
To echo the common sentiment in the comments: He really isn't that bad. He is annoying at first, and if you can't block you're boned. I honestly had much more trouble beating Gill. But maybe I give Seth a free pass because I had to beat him 24 times so I could use him :D.
And to people comparing him to SNK Bosses: HAH.
Seth is the lamest boss ever. They must have been running out of development time or something. That'd explain why Blanka looks so crap, as well...
Akuma.....SFAII.
He's not HARD, but he just has really annoying moves. His moves feel like 0 start up frames, and can knock you out of anything, and have next to no recovery time. Basically all his moves cheat. No other moves in the game are like that. Not even his own when you pick him as a playable character.
It takes some time to get used to him, but after that he'll seem much easier.
Mwhaha-Mwaha-Mwahahaha (Piledriver)
Mwah-Mwahaha-Mwahahaha (Piledriver)

@Tan
I wasn't accusing you of anything, I just am in the minority who think Tekken is better then Street fighter. I just didn't want to be cannonfodder for all the above.
Although I've bought SF4, haven't really got into it yet. Last time I played seriously was SF2 Turbo and I remember M.Bison/Vega Scissor kicking me four times in a row with no charge time for the first or subsequent kicks. Friggin' vaulting back and forth as much as he pleased. That was cheap.
