PC Gaming = Still Alive!

Over the past few months some wildly outrageous and somewhat unsubstantiated claims have been thrown about – a pimple faced kid on the train told me Spider-Man sucked, my brother bragged he could beat me at Third Strike, and my ‘friend’ told me to pass on Wii Fit because I was too heavy for the balance board, from my response to the Wii Fit comment it wouldn’t be a far stretch to assume that I was deeply hurt, but in actual fact it didn’t have much of an effect on me, firstly because IT IS NOT TRUE...ANY OF IT, and secondly because I was too busy nursing a pre-existing emotional wound I sustained from reading a number of disturbing articles featuring various industry figures RSVPing for a funeral – apparently, PC gaming is dead.

The first console I owned was a SEGA Mega Drive II (Genesis in the US) and since then my gaming has been almost exclusively on consoles but the PC still has a special place in my heart, it introduced me to first-person shooters and eye-strain through Quake and eventually led me to what would become one of my favourite games of all time - Counter-Strike, so forgive me if I’m reluctant to call time on the PC gaming industry.

The console gaming environment would not be what it is today without both the direct and indirect influence of the PC gaming industry, even the most rampant console purist would have a hard time arguing against this. Everything from genre influences to major developments in the way we play games (evident through the console internet gaming revolution) got their start on the PC, and if that’s not convincing enough...without PC gaming there would be no Xbox Live – come on, you know that hurts.

That’s not to say that PC gaming isn’t suffering, clearly it is and it all boils down to one thing - approachability.
If you’ve had any experience with PC games you’ll know that despite all the mind-blowing evolutions in technology getting a game to work on a PC is even more difficult than it would have been ten years ago.

The reason console gaming has become so popular is because of the simplicity involved, when you want to play a game you just purchase for the appropriate platform, put the game in the drive and watch it go, whereas attempting to do the same for the PC involves a whole lot more, take me for example, I love Counter-Strike but haven’t played it in over a year because I can’t get the damn thing to run on my pc. Despite upgrading my PC numerous times the game still runs like slideshow. At this point a consumer is usually faced with two options; spend a ridiculous amount of money buying a powerful new graphics card, realise that your existing components aren’t compatible with it and then sell some treasured possessions to pay for upgrades to the rest of the thing only to have it all become impotent a mere three or four months later.
The second option is to buy a home console where the only supplementary spending will be on the games, the hardware will remain largely unchanged for at least 4 years, 10 if you believe Sony.
As much as I want to play Crysis the amount of money I would have to spend in order to experience the game the way it should be is just not an option, I’d gladly support the PC if I knew that I could play the game I purchase, but that just isn’t the case.
It is for this reason that smaller flash based video games have become so popular, even though I have Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source and a bunch of other games installed on my computer Desktop Tower Defense got the most PC playtime in 2007.
This is where Steam comes in; I’m really excited to see what smaller games come out of the platform, so far Audiosurf has got me back to gaming on my PC and it’s the type of game that isn’t typically associated with PC gaming.

This is where I think the future of the PC gaming is, sure there will always be the dedicated group of gamers willing to keep up with the constantly changing hardware in order to play the triple A title but gaming as an industry will develop through the little quirky games created by a small group of passionate developers thinking outside of the box and offering experiences that large developers wouldn’t think of or couldn’t get the green light for. Playing games like Audiosurf, Desktop Tower Defense and Fez, games that don’t require divine gaming rigs to play makes me hopeful for the future of PC games, PC gaming isn’t dead – it’s evolving.

Great write up as always. Some games are just made to be in the PC as the goodness that is Audiosurf and Starcraft. And how not forget the glory days of the adventure games, the PC had many.

I use my PC for gaming (not emulation..well some), and I can say, gaming in PC it ain't dead.

Cheers for this one.

i love PC style games, but id rather just plug a keyboard and mouse into my 360. i use my 360 and TV as a computer/monitor anyway. and i sit really close.

Didn't we have this debate last month?

PC gaming is dead as far as the big budget guys are concerned. Developers like EA, Capcom and even Valve will port over pretty much all their games between console and PC. Its all in the hands of the indie developers now.

Also, best not to use Desktop Tower Defence as a cornerstone of modern PC gaming as its pretty much on the PS3 now in the form of Pixeljunk Monsters.

I agree. The the way things are, the majority of indie developers are still going to begin development for PC and then expand to consoles, not the other way around. Sure consoles are easier to own, but PCs will always be a better sandbox.

I like the collection of covers.

Btw Crysis has sold over 1 million copies, hardly a crisis.
For a point of reference Bioshock sold 1.5 million total.
500,000 of those sales where for xbox 360.

The death of pc gaming is pervasive myth but regardless just a myth.

PC gaming IS NOT DEAD. Look at Valve, they are making money like madmen right now with Steam and their games. Indie has been an up and comer, and thats good. Piracy is not as bad as people think. Its bad, but not enough to kill PC Gaming.

I dont know why people are even having this debate. PC Gaming is alive and well

Eh, this whole death of PC gaming is kind of a load of crap.

I agree with what you said for the most part but even hearing people talk about it like it's a real thing at all is aggravating.

Guess what, more people buy paperback books than hardcover or audio books. Do they hear constantly about 'The Death of the Audio Books!1!!'...No. :(

Equally dumb is the 'piracy is ruining PC gaming' when console gaming has rampant game rental/used game buying/game loaning going on that nobody seems to even mention and probably takes a bigger % chunk out of profits...

Tincow - Comparing piracy and trading of games is a bit ridiculous. Trading and buying used is severely limited by the number of physical copies in existence and the fact that used games get damaged. With piracy there is no limit to the number of copies. There is also no cash needed at all whereas buying a used game, while cheaper than a new game, costs money.

This was an excellent write up and echoed my sentiments exactly on why I now prefer consoles, almost exclusively, to the pc. I still play games on the PC, but I refuse to upgrade my pc solely for a game. I will play games up to the cycle that my computer can handle, and when that computer just gets too old a bevy of titles that my new pc can handle are opened up. It is a nice piece of gaming goodness that occurs at those times as three or four years of games (on the cheap) are opened up to me.

The large majority of games I play on my PC have Counter-Strike in their title.

I'm very hard pressed to find a PC game these days that I actually enjoy.

So, I'll just go out on a limb and say to me, PC gaming already has the stake driven through it's heart.

Yes PC gaming is still alive but unfortunately it is not what most companies are pushing their games on. Except for Indy games which are exclusive to PCs most of the time, most other games are being released on consoles at the same time or to consoles first.

And it shouldn't be this way

Who the hell still says it's dead?

Kids who can't afford PCs, that's who.

PC gaming piracy has been in full swing since well before our generation (i'm in my 20's here). However the ease of pirating pc games these days is amazing.

1) iso+keygen
2) dtools
3) ?????
4) "free" game

One of the nails in the coffin, is when microsoft stops offering it's titles for both xbox and pc platforms, and limits releases to the xbox. Honestly it'd be a smarter move, because it's easier for them to shutdown piracy on a system on the 360 than it would be for them to try to do it on a pc.

I was never a PC gamer... I just preferred to be sat in front of a TV with a controller in my hands but since consoles are now so powerful the PC has lost its technical edge over them and I think that's one of the main reasons together with the ease of use of consoles for the decline in PC games. With xbox live stepping up online play on consoles as well its just the things that made PCs so special in the first place are becoming standard in consoles.

That being said I don't know if I can ever accept RTS games on a console and there's no Dungeon Keeper 2 on any console and that is one of the best games EVER!!!
