My last entry into the coverage of the Capcom RE5/Bionic Commando event is below! Like last time, for actual coverage of Bionic Commando, check out CTZ’s post
here.
Bionic Commando
I can start this impression with almost the exact opposite statement from my Resident Evil 5 post. I am not a fan of Bionic Commando, per se. Not cause I think the original sucks or anything….far from that! Its just that I have never played it. Likewise I’m not a fan of competitive shooters (mainly cause I suck). So going in, I didn’t know whether I was going to enjoy the game or not. Anyway, here we go!
There were 8 consoles set up so that we could have 8 player deathmatches. (Disclaimer...since I don’t play many shooters forgive my limited comparisons) The game button layout was like Halo from what I remember…move with L-analog, move the aiming with R-analog, jump with A, shoot with R-trigger, punch with face buttons, and even zoom in (like with the pistol) by clicking the R-analog. Of course, the reason why you are playing, the bionic arm, is deployed with the L-trigger. You can basically grab onto any ledge as long as the reticule turns blue. When I played there were the standard weapons... you start off with a pistol, but can get an automatic weapon, a grenade launcher, sniper etc. Winning is determined by a point system which actually awards you more points for killing in a “killing spree” or doing cool things like killing in mid-air.
Anyway, the first level I played was split into three different levels. There was central platform with 4 walkways to the other edge of the stage. The cool part of this level was the ability to run off the walkways to a lower level, yet use your claw to get back up. The bad part about that was, I couldn’t figure out how to do that. In fact, my first play in this level was spent mostly on the ground floor trying to get to the action. Sometimes the action would come down to me, kill me, and then I would respawn on a higher level. Inevitably, however, I would find myself back at the bottom.
As you can tell, I was slightly (very) frustrated with this, and decided to go play RE5 again. Shortly after a chat with Seth Killian about my frustration, he told me that if you press A while latched onto a ledge from the bottom, you will actually pull yourself to the top. I decided to give it another go, and boy am I glad I did.
The second level I tried was a more open environment that seemed to take place in a city of devastation. There was rubble on the streets, broken highways, and buildings that had chunks blown out of them that you could swing into. With the new knowledge I gained, I did tons better. The level was very well designed that allowed for swinging on light posts and random structures. I also was able to pull off great moves such as swan dive off a platform, latch onto the platform I just dove from, and then pop up from the other side.
Anyway, I did much better the second time I played and on, and really enjoyed it – as Guttlesswonder put it, the game was like a great mix of Spiderman swinging mechanics and Halo shooting. I would really want to see how the single player turns out before I think of getting this game, but I did have a lot of fun playing the multiplayer. From what Seth said, they tried to put a lot of time into designing maps that had really cool grapple points, so I’d be interested in seeing the other maps that have been designed.
That’s all for my personal coverage of the Capcom event! I hope you’ve enjoyed reading, cause I sure enjoyed going!
Also, once you start to figure out the mechanics, it all becomes pretty neat.
One problem: there's the joystick to control the character, the right stick to control the aim, but the final swing reticle is just done by the game. It takes some getting used to.
Can you use your magic and get me a job here :D
Who tha hell doesn't?!
I <3 Bionic Commando very much! I am really looking forward to this game... With hype, hesitation and a helluva lot of hope.
Nice read, Tix... Yet, I wonder what this write-up would have been if not for Resident Evil stealing the show?
