I never really got into games like Guitar Hero or Rock Band. I don't know why, they just were never that fun to me. I totally understand the appeal of them, but I just don't like them as much as everyone else in the world. Last night I played Rock Band at my friend's house, and just got bored after a few songs. I was about to leave when they popped in Super Smash Bros. Melee and I ended up staying for another hour and a half. I guess when it comes to music games, big fake instruments don't interest me that much.

Audiosurf on the other hand is totally something I could get into. That game is fun as hell, and when you play the right songs, it's totally amazing. Why the hell has this not been done before? Maybe there isn't a large enough market for it so no one ever wanted to make it, but I really hope it does well. It's kind of weird when you think about it--some of the best games/ideas have come from small independent developers: Audiosurf, Everyday Shooter, Portal. I guess major developers are too busy making Madden or Tony Hawk every single year. Not to say that some really good stuff doesn't come from the big boys, and thank god there are cool companies like Valve who are willing to pick up college kids with awesome ideas, but the major developers have been making games for decades, in some cases. Why aren't the people with the experience making anything like this? I know money and business are huge factors, but sometimes it just feels like the industry is run by people who don't even play games.

I don't know. I definitely think there is a market for these kinds of games, even if it is a niche market. Half of it is probably getting the word out there about the game. You can't expect word of mouth advertising to work all the time. Make sure the people the game is supposed to be appealing to know about the game, you know? People into arty, independent stuff like me need to know this stuff is out there. Thank God I read blogs or I would have never known Audiosurf even existed, and I'm pretty wired into the game industry.
