The Great Random Battle Expt: CoD4 ?!?
SurplusGamer | 5:09 AM on 09.15.2008 12 comments

I'm a fool. A fool, thinking that I'd be able to do it. I'm one of those older gamers now, with jobs and obligations friends and even an occasional social life. The type that complains that they don't have time to play a big long forty hour epic. Especially one where my heart isn't entirely in it because I start developing a nervous twitch from all those random battles.

So, am I saying the Great Random Battle Experiment is already a failure? Well, possibly not. I could get back into it. After all, the stuff above isn't strictly true. If I love a game enough I can happily sink many, many hours into it. The problem is...

... the problem...

I bought Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for my new PC.

Now don't look at me like that. There are mitigating circumstances. Mitigating, I say!

- It was £25. This seemed like a good deal.
- The guy that gave me all of the computer parts has been urging me to get it ever since, so that I could join him in the multiplayer game and since he's a friend of mine and saved me hundreds of pounds in hardware, I figure it's the least I can do.
- He also got me to play it last time I was round his place and I was surprised and impressed.

So you see, I had to do it really. Had to. And what do I think? So far I'm impressed with how it's making me like war-shooters, for a change. When I've played them in the past they always seem impressively accurate and detailed, but somewhat clinical in execution because of this. Sure, CoD4 compromises a certain amount of that realism (for example, the Halo/Gears of War style regenerating health) but in its place is the kind of single player excitement usually only reserved for more fantastical shooters. Whats important is that it feels realistic in the places where it matters, and it's only unrealistic where realism would be either boring or frustrating. That's a clever balancing act, that is.

I think this was meant to be some kind of metaphor for the crossroads I stood at when I decided to buy CoD4...

I plan on joining my friend tonight in my first multiplayer PC game for a long while. As for FF6 - yes, it could still happen. If one evening I feel like lounging with my laptop instead of sitting at my desktop, then FF6 is still my best choice for a game to play.

You'll probably get addicted to the COD4 multiplayer, the amout of shit you get to unlock is unreal,it should become your most played game.

BUT, if you suck at FPS'S expect to get your ass handed to you, it's been over a year since it's been out, so expect all the players not to be newbies.

I don't know for sure what the pc scence is like, seeing as I play the game on my ps3, which is still full of newbies online. I do hope you are proficent at FPS games and posess good FPS skills!!

Good luck to you, great purchase and hope you kick ass online. :)

I was decent back when I last played online FPSes on the PC. But we're talking Quake Deathmatch. In any case, I have the basic co-ordination skills I just need to get back to doing it. I'll mostly be playing with friends, though. It's the only time I've found online gaming any fun, really.

It sounds you'll do just fine!!

Just be careful of snipers, constantly look at your radar map, ALWAYS look at the floor when going in rooms in case o claymores, and if needed, call an airstrike on yourself, upon realising every fucking member of the opposite team is just a few feet away!!

Experiment with different weapons, and make sure your classes cater to all types of maps. Not to mention perks, use the ones you feel can play to your strenghs.

I got tired of CoD4 after soon after unlocking most of the stuff, I tend to play Team Fortress 2 more when I'm looking for my multiplayer fix.

I think it's also that there generally seems to be more of a community spirit on most TF2 servers I play on, something that my experience with CoD4 lacked.

Still, it's a great game and while people complain about a lot of the single player being scripted, they're the kind of idiots who believe every game should be sandbox and have multiplayer - some of the set pieces are nothing short of fantastic.

@mushman - thanks for the hints, I'll try to keep 'em in mind.

@timmeh - Oh, absolutely. I'm not really all that impressed when games try to be 'cinematic' because I prefer games to be their own medium. Lots of people describe CoD4 as cinematic in reviews and things, but I dunno. I think what they're really trying to say is that like a film, and unlike many realistic/semi-realistic shooters, CoD4 is very specific in the way that it tries to craft an experience for the player. If that means heavily designed and scripted missions, I can get right behind that.

FF6 > COD4. Just my opinion.

you'll like. it's got all the exp that a RPG would have and that unlocks different weapons and perks you can use in match. good fun.

If you have an XBox360 you should be playing it on that instead.

The level of multiplayer competition is much greater on the 360 vs the PS3 and PC. I played the PC version and most everyone were complete pushovers compared to people on XBL.

Sure. I could play CoD4 on the 360.

If I wanted to not be able to play with my friends who have it on the PC.

And if I wanted to get my ass kicked even more badly than it already is.

And if I wanted lots of whiny 360 kids reminding me of the fact that I am homosexual.

And if I thought CoD4 would be a better game if I was sat further back from the screen and using a gamepad (don't get me wrong, I am not against using gamepads for FPS games - it's a fine compromise in my opinion, but it seems to me that CoD4 demands a little more accuracy).

And if I actually HAD CoD4 for the 360.

Because of the above problems, I respectfully disagree.

@Jackal - Well, it's certainly a better JRPG.
