About Me
Played/Owned most consoles since the Nes days(all but the Saturn) Tend to play all types of games, with the exception of Flight Sims. My favourite series of games is probably the Street Fighter series of games. I can still remember clearly sliding my brand new Super Nintendo out of its box one christmas and played SFII constantly for hours and hours till i was one day able to defeat it on 8 stars. I can still perform Shoryuken after Shoryuken no better than when i have a SNES pad in my hands.

I currently own an Xbox 360, A DS Lite(Bg Hands + DS Lite = RSI) and a busted old Rig

Has anyone ever made a realistic RPG?
SuperD1984 | 2:14 PM on 11.21.2008 33 comments

RPGs aren't neceesarily my favourite genre of game, my experience only containing the below short list

Final Fantasy 3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Grandia
eh, that shadow of something for the PS2
and a few others.

But, has any RPG game been set in a modern world with realistic characters and Storyline, obviously not too realistic as to be boring. But i believe if done properly with some thought(more than what i can put into it perhaps) then i don't see why no one has tasked themselves with such an undertaking.

Please remember that i've had zero gametime with any Mother game, if perhaps it contradicts me which i fear it may.

Earthbound and Persona are about as close as you're going to get, as far as I know.

I was going to suggest Earthbound. It's really not realistic, but it is set in current-era suburbia.

Think i meant Earthbound was i said mother(fail).

The idea i'm having is a kinda Halflife/FF7 mashup.

But i guess it is a genre steeped in tradition.

Any interesting ideas fellow, fellows?

In my mind a realistic RPG is not a good idea. I enjoy these kinds of games for the awesome swords, special abilities and fantastical stories. Granted, if the game was exceptional in its story or gameplay then I would certainly enjoy it. But that’s not an easy thing to do. Without something really special to compensate for the realism I'd probably decide that I could have more fun levelling up my understanding of the Japanese language then the characters' skill levels.

I don't fully believe my self that it would be such a great idea/game but i thought it was worthy of a small discussion.

Just a musing on my part more than anything significant.

The Shadow Hearts games are set in World War I/II era (early 20's/30's). There's a lot of demon nonsense in that, so I dunno if that would bother you. Shadow Hearts is one of my favorite rpgs on the ps2, so take what you will from that.

I'm with Gregory Hall on this one.

I like the whole escape reality thing as playing in real world situations wouldn't be too exciting.

Yeah thats the game i was talking about it had a kinda circle that had a specific name where you had to press 'x' within a sweet spot to maximise you attacks.

I do remember quite a rather heavy demon factor within the game, if i'm correct in thinking you get trapped in a village early one by a blood demon or something like that or a snake, not sure man i'm a bit drunk :)

also, a badass ghost on a ship?

SHENMUE.

It may be more of an adventure game, but still.

Parasite Eve comes to mind as far as settings go. It does go beyond "reality" with the obvious monsters to fight and such, but still a worthy mention.

Bah, I've never played the first one. But yeah, the ring has been prominent in the whole series I suppose.

Persona 4 is pretty close IMO, while still having more traditional MegaTen stuff.

Eternal Sonata's up there.

why? Scnerio

Allegretto: Hey Beat, come with me.
Beat: huh..what for?
Allegretto: we're gonna go to the city and ask them to lower taxes so we can stop stealing food and actually afford it for our kids.

no one said anything about storyline being to date.

I'd like to play an RPG where I could be cop, and got to respond to different calls/crimes and stuff. If that was done right I could see it being an interesting RPG,

Parasite Eve. A mix of a pseudo Resident Evil playstyle and Rpg elements. People already mentioned Persona to death, but its good. Shadow Hearts I, II, and III have a more modern feel, though heavy on demons, magic, etc.

There is actually an RPG coming out set in modern times*like..today modern*, but I can't recall the name. Bah.

Id say Shenmu is a close bet, however it doesnt have that many customisable RPG elements to it.

Still, the original game on the greatest console ever created, The Dreamcast. Was a game that deserves much more than what it was rewarded with.

If you have the time and money to invest in a dreamcast and a copy of the game, do try it out. Its a great game with an RPG feel to it.

Interesting question. Mount and Blade. PC. Indi game with a realistic medieval warfare setting.

In fact, I bet the most realistic RPGs were older PC games.
