A few minor complaints concerning the future "GOTY"
SunTzu | 11:19 PM on 05.20.2008 20 comments

You've read the reviews, no doubt. GTA4 scores anything from a "PERFECT 10 OMFG" to a "ZOMG 100% THIS IS BETTER THAN LIVING." Looking at these scores, you'd assume that every aspect of this game is flawless. Not so, and here is why (Transitions aren't my forte, okay?)

First off, a majority of what this game attempts is pulled off very poorly. The Cover System is absolute rubbish, making short bursts of fire (The only way to accurately shoot ANY weapon in this game) a chore, as you're forced in and out of cover every time you fire. Though, shooting from cover proves a much more intuitive and enjoyable experience than moving into and out of cover. Expect to lose either all your armor or all your life because you either; Ran up to a car, hit R1, and ended up taking cover on the side EXPOSED to the guys trying to murder you, or you got rushed by some prick with a shotgun, and hit R1 expecting to exit cover, only to end up taking cover on another object.

The Driving is terrible. Realistic =/= fun. Doing a 720 spin during a car chase because I had the audacity to try and take a right while going 15 miles per hour isn't fun. Fleeing from the cops during a mission, and flying out the front windshield when I run into cement barrier ISN'T FUN. I never thought I'd actually dread driving missions in GRAND THEFT AUTO! At least firing out of a vehicle is kinda fun, too bad it's useless in a majority of the chase missions, as you can't shoot a targets tire's or their exposed head through the back of their windshield until you reach a certain point.

The Cell Phone is great way to receive missions and whatnot. I also like being able to skip the drive after a failed mission through the "Re-try" texts. However, as a Multi-player menu, its useless. Tiny Screen, no server menu, and no lobby (You're thrown back into single-player when you leave a multi-player match.) Simply Disappointing.

The whole "Relationship" system was a major headache. On one hand, being "TOTALLY AWESOME TO EVERYONE!" yielded some worthwhile rewards. Being able to call in support or health or whatever is definitely awesome, but having to go on a play date EVERY TIME someone called became annoying almost immediately. Sure, I could tell them to bugger off, but then I'd have to go on even MORE play dates, because I hurt their feel bads or something.

The story, while quite good, suffered from having an uninteresting main character. Not to say Niko isn't likable, it's just that we don't actually KNOW who he is, even at the end. Yes yes, you're big on this whole "Revenge" thing, and you're only killing people because it's the only way you know how to live. Unfortunate past, dead on the inside, blah blah blah. His motivations are clear, and understandable... to HIM. Why should the player care about anything that happened to him? We only hear about it, and very briefly at that. We don't see it, or experience it. What happened to Niko is a HUGE part of his character, and there's barely a paragraph of dialog dedicated to it.

I have even more complaints, but those deal mostly with comparisons between this game and its predecessor, San Andreas, and I'm not fond of criticizing one game for lacking features another had, even if they're in the same series. Even so, its disappointing to see some of the features from SA, that made the game so notable, get the cut.

Honestly, I have no idea how such a flawed game is so widely acknowledged as "The best game since Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time." Not that it matters, even if a hundred thousand people read this and agree with me completely (HAH), this game will still go down in history as a huge Success (much like Halo 3 did, and definitely for the same reasons.)
The following is intended for the pricks that couldn't be bothered to read my whole post, and skipped to the end just to read the score or whatever

ALL COMPLAINTS ASIDE, THIS IS LIEK DA BEST GAEM EVER MAN, NIKO IS TOTALLY COOL AND BRUCIE IS FUNNAY LOLOLOLOLOL 12/10 GOTY

I'm worried about skynet.

Like I said, I had even more complaints than that. I suppose writing a whole new design doc for GTA4 would have used less text. My Bad.

Could you space your paragraphs? It makes it a bit of a strain to read. With that said, you make some valid points. I do have to agree with you on the cover system and how it's absolutely terrible, but I disagree on the driving. I love how the cars handle.
SunTzu's Destructoid Blog
Sorry about the spacing, this is kinda my first D-toid blog, and I'm unfamiliar with its "quirks." I tried to artificially tab each line by hitting the spacebar 4-5 times, but I guess I can't do that? oh well.
wardrox's Destructoid Blog
wait, how id you get in my head? How much have you played? As somebody who agrees, I must say it gets much easier the more you play.

Formatting, just add a blank line between paragraphs.

Thanks Wardrox, I guess I'll have to give up on tabbing my new paragraphs. Oh well.

As far as the game goes, I've actually beaten it. Eventually, you do get used to the flaws, yes. The problem with that is these certain parts never actually become enjoyable, or even good. They only become (at least with me) merely tolerable.

12/10? Impossible. No game can score higher than an 11.

Why do so many people suck at driving? I think its the best driving engine in any gta game, and one of the most fun ive ever used in any game.

@ Ajaxender
Did you play previous GTA games? I'm not trying to be a dick, it's just that a friend of mine hadn't played GTA before playing GTA4, and enjoyed the driving much more than I did, so I'm thinking the reason a lot of folks didn't care for the driving in GTA4 is because they've become accustom to the laid back, almost cartoon-y, driving physics of earlier GTA games.

I like the driving and I feel the cover system is pretty good.

I can't disagree more about most of your points. The driving is great, you get used to it and actually getting away from cops and stuff is more satisfying as a result.

The cover system.... OK, it needs a bit of work, like when you switch to another covering spot when you want to get off. In general though, I love it and find it is very effective for me.

Dating etc, is a drag at times but it gives you something to do instead of kill kill kill and gets you immersed in the game more. Plus, LJ delivers gunus for you. That rocks, esp after you are busted.

I'm thinking a prequel to this game, taking us back to Niko's early days. Maybe a first-person shooter.

Driving is excellent in GTA IV, and this is coming from someone who hates racing games. GTA4 is the best thing for people who always wanted to enjoy racing games but just couldn't get into them, or me.

Slow the fuck down. Makes it easier to drive. Use the assault rifle. STFUAJPG.

Also, unrelated, saw a discount tampon box at the store while looking around. Tag line said: "We may not be #1, but we're still up there".
gotdurnrite's Destructoid Blog
I agree that those "quirks" do get old (especially the dating) but for me the cover system works. You can shoot people without popping out and exposing yourself by not auto-targeting, just half squeeze the trigger. Niko will reach around or over the object to shoot. It's not as accurate but it's good to temporarily stun people so you can then pop out and kill them or you can aim for the head and take them down quick.

@blehman
You're missing the point. It's a car chase, slowing down is the last thing you want to, or should have to, do. I can understand having to control your speed, but having to slow down to a stop just to make a turn, when the guy I'm chasing just pulled off the same turn FLAWLESSLY going 90 miles an hour?

The only thing I can agree with you on is the relationships. I spent too much time answering the phone, picking folks up, and making 'em happy early on and I was making barely any real progress in the actual missions, and even more importantly I wasn't having much fun. I've been having a lot more fun now that I ignore the cell phone/tell people no. Towards the end of the game maybe I'll start to care again and make nice with my "friends", but right now fuck 'em.
TrailerParkJesus's Destructoid Blog
Here's kind of a tip about the relationships. When they call, accept the invitation to whatever, then call them right back to cancel. The "like" goes up on the acceptance, but does not go down on the cancel.

I feel real shitty doing it sometimes, but I just hate how time consuming and distracting driving from one side of town to the other is, just to get some measly props.

And don't get me started on the shitty cars Lil Jacob provides you for the deliveries.
