One of my favorite moments of all time in Etrian Odyssey was when you first get to draw on the map. This is one of the most innovative ways I've ever seen of being able to keep track of where you've been in an RPG.
You can not only keep track of where you've been but you can draw walls to tell where openings are within areas of the dungeons as well as painting the floor so you know if there were any traps or what was around the area. There are also icons you can place around to tell you what was where and how you can go back and find it.
The characters were also very nicely designed and I felt the game just in general fit very well together. If you're an RPG fan this is not something you should miss. I know I would have been sad if I had.
