About Me

Umm, I'm Andrew. I live in Southern California and I've been playing video games since I was old enough to hold a controller. I watch way too much Pro Wrestling (yeah I know it's "fake"), and I have turned Rock Band Drums into serious business.

I also have a reputation for doing stupid things on Stickam when the YAY! M&M's! room is up.

My Rock Band bass pedal is much better than yours.

Rock Band drums, quite possibly the most awesome gaming peripheral ever. Sadly they have a very annoying flaw in the form of a crappy plastic bass pedal. If you haven't already, you most certainly will break the pedal at some point. And if you're like me, you've managed to break 3 of them in the 4 months that the game has been out.

Now you could just fill out a form with EA and have them replace it for free, but I wanted a permanent solution since I'm sure at some point they'll say I've broken too many pedals and make me start paying. So I did some thinking and made this beast of a pedal:

In case anyone out there feels like splurging to support their Rock Band habit, here's how I did it:
Bought a Pearl bass pedal and the only bass pedal practice pad that was being sold at Guitar Center.

Then I came home and had to gut the broken pedal. First, take the piece of the pedal with all the orange bits, look for some screws, and unscrew them. You'll see this:

The pink arrow is pointing to where there will be a magnet. You'll have to get it out somehow. I used a small flat-head screwdriver and dug/pried until the magnet popped out.

Next, flip over the other part of the pedal and you should find a couple screws in those loop things that keep the pedal attached to the rest of the drums while you play. Unscrew them so you can open this little panel:

Once that's open you can pull out the piece that sends the signal to the game when you press the pedal. Now you can throw that useless plastic pedal to the side and bring in the real pedal.

Put the magnet on the underside of the pedal, use whatever methods you deem necessary to keep it from falling off. Then put the other piece under it, just like it was in the plastic pedal. It'll take some experimenting, but once you get everything positioned correctly the game will register bass hits whenever your real bass pedal hits the practice pad.

Now I can rock the fuck out without fear of snapping a piece of plastic. And my leg no longer gets tired after 5 songs

For $100, I'll just avoid playing heel-up, even though that can kill on some of the expert songs. I keep my heel down, and it doesn't feel like I'll break the standard Rock Band pedal. How have you been playing?

If I could make a decent one for $30-40, then I'd give it a go. Time to look at the classifieds.

This just happened to my pedal. A friend of mine plays Expert and went crazy as shit on some song.

@MaxVest

I started playing heel down. But as I moved up through Hard and Expert there came a point where I was basically forced to go heel up, otherwise I'd miss a ton of notes and my leg muscles would start hurting like a mofo.

That is a sweet job but just to get this out there wouldn't you be able to buy a midi drum pedal for an electronic drumset? It just plugs in like the cheapo plastic one does to the drum set.

Also, I just keep the pedal pressed just over halfway down it makes it much eaier on the pedal and lets me play longer as my calf lights on fire after one song.

im surprised that i'm still going on my first bass pedal.
i just keep the ball of my foot directly over the orange part for fear of snapping it.

i figure i'll make something like this eventually.

Very sweet. I saw some people talk about this in other forums. Unless you were the guy who also taped socks to the pads to reduce the noise. :D

Well at least they tried to make the pedal durable, but for anybody that doesnt play drums there always going to keep there foot off the pedal instead of keep it on there.

Nice work, I have yet to break my pedal but i've only had RB for a couple weeks now. I always keep my toes at or under the orange line, i'm hoping that will help.

Nice work... i just don't see why the pedal could have been made out of metal in thew first place. With all the trouble people have been having, I don't think they would have minded having to pay a little extra for the durability.
Not so sure about the Santino avatar however.

That’s awesome, dude. I’ve had my game since the middle of December and haven’t broken my pedal yet, but then again, I’m only playing on medium.

That's pretty sweet. I ended up with a pedal from a company called pedalmasters at http://www.pedalmasters.com.

I didnt have the cash for a real drum pedal. So I took the next best thing. If I break this next pedal, I may have to suck it up and hold back on some booze so I can save for a pedal setup such as yours.
