Top five reasons why you should own a Wii even though you hate Nintendo
Subenu | 4:28 AM on 09.08.2008 21 comments

Yes, I know, another Top 5 list, but at least I’m trying to be somewhat original.

While it is pretty easy to point out every good game made by Nintendo, it is way more difficult to find other reasons why to own a Wii. So I sat down some time ago to find these reasons and I think these are the five most important reasons why you should own a Wii even though you hate Nintendo (out of some random and/or distorted reason):

Number 5: You know what you are talking/flaming about!

While it is easy to flame about something you don’t own or know, having a Wii near you perfects your already almost flawless arguments. And if one of these little crying fanboys asks if you even have a Wii, you can always tell them, that, yes you have. Not that you would really like to have one, but it looks kind of nice and doesn’t smell bad.

Number 4: Light gun Shooters

Come on, you got a plethora of Light gun shooters on the system! And light gun shooters are awesome, right? RIGHT?
Ok, ok, Target Terror may not have been that great, but House of the Dead and Ghost Squad were kind of nice. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is also great fun and in my opinion totally under appreciated by Reviewers. It’s a blast in Co-op too!
Also, no need to buy a Light gun (get rid of the Zapper… doesn’t even really work with RE:UC).

Number 3: No More Heroes

No more heroes is one of the most interesting games I have ever played. Even though it’s a bit weak on the gameplay side, it’s totally awesome when it comes to story and character design. You will love and remember this game, because it is so damn unique!

Number 2: WiiWare

Yes, you read right. WiiWare titles are also a reason to earn a Wii. There are many crappy titles out there, I agree, but Lost Winds and Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles: My life as a king are unique and fun. And that’s all that matters.

Number 1: Virtual Console

Surprised? I don’t think so.
Even if you would take Nintendo games into account, the Virtual Console is the most attractive selling point of the Wii. It doesn’t only cover all Nintendo consoles (remember, those guys we hypothetical hate in this article?) but also Turbografx, Neo Geo, Mega Drive and Master System. Heck, there are systems on it I never heard of before (Turbografx wasn’t popular in Europe). All those gems you missed, because you were too young to have enough money to buy everything or because you weren’t even born, are now available (also, import titles).

Well, this is the complete list. Hope you enjoyed it.

Oh and Number 0: You can blame it on the Wii when you brake that extremely expensive birthday present of your girlfriend, instead of using your cat, that died five years ago in a tragic car accident, as a scapegoat.

Valid reasons. However, I've played all of the good games on the system and XBLA has tons more great downloadable games than Wiiware so I sold my Wii.

I don't hate the Wii, I hate the devs for putting out such shitty casual games and ruining the system.

I already own one. Quit telling me what to do man!

Roms are illegal (as long as you don't own the originals). If you use them you support piracy.

Ok, let me try.

5. No, I do know what I'm talking about.

4. Arcades.

3. Not fun.

2. Also, not fun.

1. Roms.

Yeah, I'll remember it for awhile. Shame I traded it in immediately after beating it, as there's nothing else to fucking do once you've seen the ending.

Honestly, if I still had my Gamecube I'd probably have gotten rid of my Wii by now, as the backwards compatibility is the only real reason I still have it. Although I still could sell it and buy a GCN dirt cheap.

LOL, I refuse to play No More Heroes. I'll buy it when it's 10 bucks.

The only reason you should own a Wii is because you have a significant other.

And Metroid.

@SUBENU

I would rather support illegal piracy than to spend 15 bucks on a game that I have bought 15 times in the past.

5 Reason Why You Shouldn't Own A Wii:

1. You already own a Gamecude.
2. Very bad/laggy controls/very bad graphics.
3. PSN/XBL have better downloadable games.
4. PS3/360 have better quality games.
5. Captain Rainbow

@ Jack

I support Captain Rainbow.

Would you be so kind to tell me which game on VC costs these 15 bucks? Thank you.
Besides, Roms aren't illegal when you bought the game 15 times in the past, which means you contradict yourself.

Here are some games that cost 1500 Wii points:

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals, My Life as a King

Ok, VC games onlygo up to 10 bucks, but Bionic Commando cost 10 bucks and its updated.

I enjoy my Wii regularly, does this invalidate these reasons for me?
Subenu's Destructoid Blog
@Jack
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals: My Life as a King is one single WiiWare title and thus the only one costing 1500 WiiPoints.

I don't hate the Wii. It just doesn't seem to have enough games I want to play. It's RPG lineup is rather dreadful and other than No More Heroes, there just isn't a game that says "buy a wii."
perri's Destructoid Blog
The Wii is not as bad as the internet wants it to be. Instead of generic shooters it gets casual games. Every system is going to have a ton of stuff you don't want to play, the games on the Wii that have effort put into them are really worth the price of admission though, 09 is looking really good as well. I play my Wii almost everyday.

@Jack
Sorry, I tend to nitpick sometimes.

@Cowzilla3
Not really, no...

I purchased a Wii cause I wanted a console my girl was more comfortable with.I have a 360 and PS3 but most those games she can't get into. In Halo CE she was always walking off of cliffs and generally getting lost. She actually enjoyes titles like MarioKart, Wii-PLay and Rabbids where she feels like its amor elevel playing field. Those games are fun to play together but unfortunately beyond party game with friends theres not much that appeals to me on the Wii. I tried Metroid a while back and just couldn't get into which sucks cause it seems to be quite the game. Zelda games aren't my thing - I just associate "go left young man." with thats series. I'll probably give Battalion Wars a go and that upcoming Wii-mote lightsaber game. I'm sure Wii-sports Resort will be fun and the inevitable Mario Power Tennis Wii. However, it ends up fun in small bursts for me and thus more of a novelty.

With titles like Little Big Planet, Fallout 3, Left4Dead I think my Wii may collect dust for a while
Max Power's Destructoid Blog
5. My former housemate had a Wii. It was dusty.
4. We once rented Umbrella Chronicles. It was shit and way too short
3. No More Heroes is one of the most pretentious games I ever saw. Other than that, it looked like a tech demo gone wrong.
2. Not interested (Seriously, I just went through the list on Wikipedia...Major League Eating?)
1. ROMs (I would use them if I were interested in retro console gaming. As it is, I only mildly care for retro PC gaming. I also think your piracy accusation is out of place. These games were made decades ago. There's a statute of limitations on this crap, maybe not legally, but logically.)

/rant (Sorry if it sounded uptight, just stating my opinion)
Ceej989's Destructoid Blog
umm....I like your pictures?
pedrovay2003's Destructoid Blog
@Toneman

I have to disagree, actually. I think XBLA is crap. There are like 2 or 3 good games on there, and the rest are crap. Same thing with WiiWare right now, but you also have the Virtual Console on the Wii. Xbox Originals doesn't compare to that, either.
