About the necessity of a Video game canon
Sven Wohl | 4:38 PM on 05.09.2009 5 comments

Hello everyone,

Before I actually start talking why there is a certain need for a video game canon, I think I might have to explain to you what I mean with the word „canon“. A canon contains a certain number of works of its specific medium that represent the best works in that particular medium. There are Film and literary canons out there, and there also is a very small video game canon. This canon includes (at least according to wikipedia) ten entries:

Spacewar! (1962)
Star Raiders (1979)
Zork (1980)
Tetris (1985)
SimCity (1989)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990)
Civilization I/II (1991)
Doom (1993)
Warcraft series (beginning 1994)
Sensible World of Soccer (1994)

I personally think this is a shame, because there are so many games that are being left out. We need such a canon mostly for academic discussions, but such canons are also a sign of the medium getting out of its so often proclaimed infancy.
I have not found many discussions about the game canon yet, so I started one in the Destructoid Forum where I hope we can build a new canon, that is bigger and better. If you have any propositions, just go there, and feel free to write it down. Just give a reason why you want the game on the list. You can find the Topic here: http://www.destructoid.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12642
I'll keep track of the progress and update also on my blog.

Thank you a lot for reading this and participating.

I saw the thread in the forum but I didn't post because the task is so daunting. At ten games the current list is pretty pathtic and will take a lot of work to get it up to par with Literary canon.

Your blog made me feel guilty for being lazy so I went ahead and suggested a handful of games in the thread.

Did not know about this thread- I should get to the forums more often. This is a great idea, something I've been thinking about for a little while. That list is small but good. I'll have to check out the forum thread. I'd say one of the Mega Man games NEEDS to be in there.
