About Me

A self proclaimed professor of survival horror despite only having a BA (Hons) degree in film. Go figure.

Okay, maybe I should write more here but I once did an interview for Law's blog, which explains everything about me.

In the meantime, I'm just a guy who writes about videogame theory and how the medium can achieve better cinematic emulation (while keeping its own indentity). Though, if that's too boring, you can always find something delightfully fluffy in the following:

Deadly Premonition Box Art Revealed and A New Japanese Trailer
Stevil | 10:17 AM on 01.18.2010 4 comments

What’s this?

Another blog about a horror game nobody wants (see: here and here)?

Man, I need to get a hobby. Recently, a friend said to me, ‘you take your shirt and sweater off in one go? That’s the behaviour of a psychopath.’

Who am I to argue? They have a Masters in psychology and some other thing ending in ‘-ology’. I guess riding a bike on the weekends doesn’t really cut it when it comes to keeping a healthy mind anymore. I think I might try and make model ships or houses out of matchsticks. You know, like my father did when he was...in...Prison...OH GOD!

Anyway, Ignition Entertainment put out some new promotional stuff over the weekend for Deadly Premonition (formerly known as the superior sounding Rainy Woods). Marvelous Entertainment also announced that they were releasing the game in Japan as Red Seeds Profile.

I don’t know who comes up with these revised titles, but it’s obvious they hit a ‘catchy title’ benchmark when they called it Rainy Woods. Since there were two announcements for the same game, we got two different trailers, two different cover images and two different websites! Well, at least somebody out there was excited. Hey, it was a slow weekend for me.

US Version

Actually, the trailer was posted ages ago on several gaming websites (including its own), but it’s now in HD apparently. It doesn’t really make up for the schizophrenic style and poor editing though. My guess is that this was originally a Japanese trailer, but the voiceover was removed. I like the artwork though. I know it’s as unsubtle as a hammer to the face, but I think they did a good job of making it stand out.

It’s got a release date of 23/02/10 and it’s $19.99. But you knew that already!

Sad news for PS3 fans though – I haven’t seen any plans for an English release on the system.

JPN Version

Despite the cheap looking artwork, I got say I prefer this trailer. It gives you a slightly better idea of what the game is about. The US version is just trying too hard to be mysterious and weird, while this one has a better pacing and sense of what’s going on (yes, yes...they’re also overselling Twin Peaks angle, I know). There’s also mention the profiling aspect of the game, which I originally thought to be some kind of questioning system.

Anyway, this one is a lot better. It’s got chainsaws in it for a start!

Red Seeds Profile is being released, on the cheap, a little later in Japan – 11/03/10 to be precise. Also, it’s going multi-platform, with a simultaneous release on the 360 and PS3. Personally speaking, this clears up the confusion of PS3 gameplay in the US trailer and confirms my suspicion about it being Japanese originally.

For the record, it’s only multi-platform in Japan and I don’t think this version is region free either. Actually, I’m not sure of the whole ‘region free’ issue at the moment. Play Asia said it had ‘no region protection’ on Friday, but now it’s changed to NTSC-U/C as of today. Hmm!

Well, I’m excited anyway. I’m getting weirdly more excited for this game than Mass Effect 2 at the moment. Maybe because it’s an old school survival horror or maybe because I’ll play any old crap with out-dated graphics and intriguing gameplay - see: just about every Gamer Obscura blog I’ve written so far.

Hell, maybe it’s because I’m psychopath with a penchant for removing two items of upper body clothing simultaneously.

Looks interesting. Haven't heard about this game at all.

Yeah, blame Ignition Entertainment for that. Seems like they're keeping promotional costs to a bare minimum. It makes sense with this game's development history, but Ignition are keeping all the good stuff tucked away on Twitter and the like, so I think they're going for the 'word of mouth' approach, like they did with Muramasa: The Demon Blade.

MAN I want this game. I'll gladly pay $20 for any original horror game, no matter how cheesy or b-movie it looks. It was true when ObsCure came out, and it's true today.
