Ah, Diablo III was announced. Yes, I know I'm late in talking about it since it was a while back, but if you couldn't tell I was away from Dtoid for a bit. So, what about Diablo? I don't know what most people think about this series, but I believe it is fairly solid.
After hearing the announcement of the next game, I, of course, installed Diablo and Diablo 2 (+LoD) onto my computer to give these old games a whirl. I haven't played this series since my junior year in high school, more or less, which means for about five years. Like any game from so long ago--that I haven't played in a while--it loses the wow factor it once had.
Don't get me wrong, these games are classics. They are fun, and I enjoy the story. If a game entertains me, it succeeds. However, it is so odd to become so frustrated with things that weren't such a big deal five to six years ago. To be fair, I'm pretty sure Diablo 2 is about eight years old, and I'm probably spoiled by all the new features of video games.
It was amazing to see people still playing on battle.net after all these years. What was more shocking was all the ads and spambots either trying to steal your account or send you to sites to buy D2 items (and probably steal your account/cd key).
This two discoveries lead me to my next two discussion points. One, obviously, Diablo 3 will use battle.net and not be an MMO. Well, we knew that because Blizzard said so in the announcement, but we also knew it before it was announced because fans would eat Blizzard's face if they had to pay 15 dollars a month for Diablo. Second, what is Blizzard going to do about these spammers on battle.net when D3 comes out? I really hope they monitor the chat with more force or something. Hell, they can hire me and I'll moderator the board. Seriously, I need a job Blizzard.
Anyway, the gameplay footage--despite what some fans think--looks awesome. I know some people were complaining that it wasn't dark enough, but I think it looks fine. The art style is Blizzard, so I don't know what they expect. Diablo and Diablo II were just limited by graphics. I mean take a random sampling of games from that era: Fallout (1 and 2, not tactics just because I hate it), Baldur's Gate, etc. The graphics are similar, in my opinion. Then look at Baldur's Gate for the consoles. I know the biggest complaint seems to stem from lack of a light radius, but who is say that the video's didn't just have them disabled for the preview?
It doesn't matter, all the complainers will buy the game. I will buy the game. And if you're reading this--you're really bored for one--you'll probably buy the game.
I don't think Blizzard has made one game that flopped, yet (no, not Starcraft Ghost or Warcraft Adventures, they didn't come out). Perhaps, this is the reason for the long development times and the "it's done when it's done slogans".
Well, that's what I think of Diablo...as if you cared.
I kinda like the new style of the environment, though what most people are pissed off from I guess is the ugly chunky character models and such. True 3D makes them look more..slow and non-"realistic".
Aside from stating that D2:LoD has lost its 'wow' factor (blasphemy!!!), this was still an excellent read!!!
I completely disagree with the horde of people saying the game is too 'colorful', but I sincerely hope we will see the return of the light radius. But you made the perfect statement that I've repeated myself to many people online: "who is say that the video's didn't just have them disabled for the preview?"
Exactly!
We don't know whether it's in development but not finished, hidden from the announcement demo, or purposefully missing from those areas to make the following zones look especially dark in comparison!
I'm playing D2 again and the gameplay mechanics are just as addictive as ever. When I started playing again it was sickening how much I was playing to get all the best gear again but now that I've got great gear on my chars I'm getting bored with it. Who knows maybe it is time to start up a new char.
Diablo 2 still rocks. You stop that talk now.
The people who complain about the lack of light radius don't seem to remember how much light radius items sucked in D2. Always wasting space on my rare items!
I wouldn't be surprised at the amount of ppl on b.net, most were likely there for the same reason as you were: got a hankering for D2 after D3 was announced.
No, Diablo 2 has still been filled with thousands of people even before the announcement of Diablo 3 - though, obviously there are more returning for nostalgic reasons.
The light radius as a stat might have sucked for you (I never had a problem with it on items)... but the actual mechanic did create the sense of dungeon crawling... which is what I thought the series was all about.
I'd really prefer to play a new Diablo 3 with a feel of something more than just a new Gauntlet Legends - and I really hope/think Blizzard will deliver that with a darker sense of shadows and fog in dark areas.
you know i have a color monitor, so im all in for the color in my videogames.
Im going to masturbate with diablo 3 footage for a bit now...
bye!
Hell, I'm still hoping it gets ported to one or both of the consoles.
@Velt - Fuck yeah! The new colors rock! The only thing missing is a light radius and ominous shadows and fog surrounding your character inside dungeons and outdoor areas overwhelmed with undead.
@Y0j1mb0
I agree, I agree. It's something was missing. I assume it was eight years and me being 13. I didn't say it didn't rock. I will say that it is the top grouping of best games of all time.
@Arttemis
Thanks for the compliment, man! It's nice to have someone appreciate you.
I still play through D2 + LOD, at least once a year with my buddy. We've played through with all the characters at least 5 times.
...Quite a treasure you have there in that horadric cube!
Battle.net is one of the greatest contributions ever made to online gaming.
I picked up Diablo (not sure if I got D2 with it) a while back, played about 15 minutes of it, and never touched it again. I was really into StarCraft at the time, so I didn't get Diablo its due. I've considered going back and giving it a shot - is it worth it?
@Char
I'd say it's worth a play, especially if you never have before. Better hurry before SC2 comes out, or you might just drop it again.
