This topic has been a hot button issue in the gaming world for...well ever, really. Ok, to be fair, I guess we'll say since the sega/snes generation. It's hard to worry about violence in the 8-bit era and before. I couldn't say what game started the debate, and people may disagree with me when it started. I do remember; however, when the debate entered into my life. Mortal Kombat. I remember it was everywhere. Violence, blood, gore, death, and kids being corrupted. From then on it has been an avalanche.
Now we have MadWorld. Have you seen the trailer for this game? Click this
link or this
link for it.
Everyone has always argued that violence is fine if it is tastefully done (GTA), or is justified by the game's story (Manhunt); though, these statements and examples are debatable. Regardless, after seeing Mad World in action, I believe that is a game that is completely built on mindless violence and killing. Perhaps they built in a similar story to Smash TV or the Running Man movie, but I still believe they wanted to make a game solely for the killing and violence. Look at the style. Black and white, and red blood that stands out over everything.
Now, what do I think of this? It is completely fine. Violence doesn't have to be tasteful or justified to be fun. Maybe people are cringing at that thought--violence as fun--but it's true. Video game violence that is. That is one of the many reasons that games are so popular. Games allow people to relieve stress, and escape from the real world. Escaping from the real world does not mean losing all sensitivity to real world violence or going mad (at least in 99% of gamers).
I have said that I play games for their stories. Well, that is true. GTA4 had a great story, and was very entertaining. It is important that games have stories; however, sometimes I'm frustrated and I just want to blow things up. Take a chainsaw and run rampant...in video games. There are no consequences in the land of video games. I can maim and murder and release a world of stress.
MadWorld looks like it will be the perfect game to do this in. From what I can tell from the screens and the video, it appears to be about a fight to the death gameshow. I think it may be a fun romp.
The problem with keeping violent video games away from underage gamers seems to be from where the debate really stems since adults should be allowed to play what they like. Problems that need addressing are the AO rating and parents.
AO ratings are a joke, and cannot be put on any game since that essentially kills the game. What is the point of a rating that no one will put out? Either publishers need to actually allow these games to be put out, or the rating goes into the trash. Otherwise it is pointless, or maybe it exists because it allows an out for the ESRB if they want to ban a game without "banning" the game...
Parents. Well, obviously we cannot control parents, and neither can the game industry. Parents that are really concerned about their children and violent video games should have no problem as long as they monitor what they buy, allow their children to buy, and pay attention to what games little Jimmy is playing in his room.
Really it all boils down to parental responsibility. Are violent games harmful to underage gamers? Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps it depends on the gamer, and maybe not all adult gamers need to play these games; however, I do not believe in punishing the majority of sane gamers who enjoy a little of stress releasing violence now and then because some people can't tell truth from reality (or parents don't want to be parents).
Long live the carnage. I'm gonna go blow something (fictional) up.
Personally, I find the ridiculous, over-the-top violence found in MadWorld and No More Heroes far less disturbing than realistic violence. At a certain point, it just becomes so silly you can't take it seriously anymore.
I agree with Mxy. Suda 51 said that he was going to make No More Heroes more violent than Manhunt. Based on the premise and amount of bloodshed and killing, it actually was. Since it was so over-the-top however, it didn't have nearly the effect manhunt did
yep. I personally am not bothered by violence to begin with, but MadWorld just looks downright entertaining, given the creative names on how you can kill people.
I think we need more games like this. Every game company out there needs to make at least 1 MadWorld / No More Heores style game. Maybe then it will become such a norm that all of the focus of the right wing conservative christian politicians will be on something more important like, crime for example. Real life crime, in real life..where people are being shot, stabbed, murdered, raped etc..
You're exactly right, the root of the problem is parents, the conservative soccer moms who supposedly want less government interference in society, yet at the same time aren't willing to take responsibility for their emo hellspawn (see the fox news clips from the Mass Effect debacle from last winter for some good examples of this)
Oh, man. Mass Effect. That was so retarded, and Fox news had no clue what they were talking about.
The thing is MadWorld is black and white, not the slightest bit realistic and the developers are trying to make it funny (I certainly was in hysterics during the E3 trailer). Also, its a Wii game and can you imagine anyone trying to call out the Wii, a console these gaming-illiterate people only know for WiiFit and WiiSports, for being violent? Its just not going to happen.
Manhunt got the shit it did for being Manhunt, same with GTA. MadWorld won't get the shit because like Saints Row, its not Manhunt or GTA no matter how much it plays like it.
Man, I hope this game is actually good. It looks great, but I'm worried it will end up being shallow gameplay-wise. Like No More Heroes. <ducks>
Also, what Mxyptlk said.
Stetsonblade: It's Kombat (not Combat). ;)
Hoodie: NMH was great for the boss battles.
I have seen both trailers for this game and I'm looking forward to it. That said, I feel different than many gamers I know in that I don't like a game that is violent to be fun. Matter of fact, the less violent and more happy, the better.
My position on the violence issue doesn't mean I am going to limit myself to Barbie Princess games though. I still play everything from Manhunt to Gears of War (etc...), but there is something to be said for Mario, Zelda, Sonic and bunches of other mostly non-violent games that are fun too; which I prefer more.
When it comes to violence in games, I only worry about the desensitizing aspect of it. Don't tell me that little Johnny can play Halo online 20+ hours/wk and not get messed up, I don't buy that crap. As the game industry pushes violence further than any other entertainment medium, we gamers are going to have to be prepared to take the flack.
I'll stand with all the rest of you in defending games like NMH and Mad World (Bayonetta looks especially violent from the little clip I've seen), from censorship. Understand that I will also be pushing for games to just remain fun for the sake of being enjoyable though, and not because of how much blood can be spilled.
@ThinkFreeMind
Ah, bah, I wasn't paying attention obviously! Thanks!
Oh, and I agree that little Johnny will probably be screwed up if he spent all his time playing these games, but I'm against him playing them in the first place. I don't it desensitizes me, though.
I fully believe I have developed enough to grasp the difference between fantasy and reality. Most--not the most--adults have. We shouldn't have to take flack. We're adults and can handle adult materials.
But I completely agree that little J-man shouldn't be playing M-rated games (for sure) for 1 hour much less 20.
I just want to note that this is not a swipe at your statement or anything. I just wanted to clarify that I actually agree with you. That's why I think parents really need to become more involved-a lot more. It should not be the video game industry or our duty to make sure little Johnny doesn't screw himself up with a clearly labeled M-rated game.
@Stetsonblade: Yeah. I am against kids playing M rated games too, but I think often times we take it for granted that there are many crappy parents out there. So in that respect, I just worry about the youth growing up to be psycho killers. Sure adults and kids both play FPS games, but when I'm old and they come to rob my home, they'll have the faster reflexes. Scary thought. O_O
