Sarkeesian and her research material

Feminist Frequency has been an ongoing web series for nearly three years. Consisting of nearly thirty-two videos, the series explores sexist, racist, and religious representations in fictional media and advertisements. Though Anita Sarkeesian's claim to fame has spawned from her recent Kickstarter to gain support for her mini documentary series, Tropes vs Women in Video Games. The project's page provides a rough outline of the twelve videos that will make up the documentary series as well as rough information regarding their contents. The description states that each video will be anywhere from ten to twenty minutes long and will be available to the general public for free. It also states that "a lot of time and money" will be needed for the production; Sarkeesian states that she will personally be "researching and playing hundreds of titles" and ensures that all pledges would be used to cover the cost of equipment, production, and research material (games and downloadable content).

The Kickstarted launched on May 17th of this year. In less than twenty-four hours, it reached its $6,000 pledge goal. Backers continued to grow over the month resulting in Sarkeesian raising nearly $160,000 for the project by June 16th. From there, all updates were promised to be available only to those who backed the project; she went on to publicly display her research materials, over 300+ games, and provided an official update expressing her excitement. "I can now commit full-time to Feminist Frequency and to this video series which is truly a dream come true for me", she writes. "I can now also hire my producer full-time for this project. Plus we are in the process of bringing another writer/researcher on board part-time." With such passion and staffing, one would think that Feminist Frequency crew would be ready to tackle their production with full force.

Then there was silence...And then there was insubordination.

Nearly a month followed where no updates were given. Backers began posting comments on the Kickstarters' page and reaching out to her Twitter account asking for some confirmation that the project was at least underway. Most questions, however, went unanswered. One backer mentions in the comments that he captured a screenshot stating an estimated date on one of the Kickstaters' goals and Tweeted it to Sarkeesian asking for some explanation as to why the paid backers were being kept in the dark. The backer was then blocked from her Twitter and was ignored as a result. "I would be absolutely fine if she just responded to my tweet with a simple 'Still working and capturing footage'," wrote "Mike".

"Mike"'s sceencap of his banishment

The screencap had then been leaked, and rumors began to spread that the Kickstarter was a scam with no real intention of ever being completed. Only then did Sarkeesian take the time to respond.

Four days ago she took the time to clear up the rumors and tried to rebuild the trust that she was beginning to lose amongst her supporters. She debunks the claims that her research was being taken from backer surveys instead of independent investigations, while also tackling other accusations. I can understand the frustration and anger that arises from backer's leaking information, but in their defense, neutral inquiries were being ignored. An unintentional drastic measure had to be taken in order to receive any form of response which leads me to ask: Why has it taken this long to shed some light on the situation?

After discovering the weeks of silence and apathetic responses, I did some research on the progression of her full-time commitment. Her web site has sat untouched since her last Tropes vs Women update on August 1st. At the time of writing this article, her YouTube channel had not been touched since August 12th with no new videos being uploaded since the initial promotional video for the Kickstarter. Up until a week ago, there had been no updates since the pledges were closed. However, she - or at least Feminist Frequency staff members - frequented Twitter (@femfreq), Facebook, and Tumblr regularly. While there is no doubt that such a project is difficult and time consuming to produce, she still had plenty of time to discuss Doctor Who with fans, promote other feminist blogs, and post pictures of herself with gaming memorabilia. Despite all of this activity, she was unable to provide any sort of update regarding the Tropes vs Women production.

"If she can't take 10 minutes a fortnight (seeing as how it has been 19 days since the last update) to update her backers, then wtf," commented backer "Bryan" on the Kickstarter comment page A statement that I can agree with even when being an outside viewer of the documentary.

Leaking information is not appropriate behavior - especially when the benefit to being a backer is that you gain access to these restricted updates. After the discoveries regarding failure to provide adequate updates, I cannot help but feel that the actions are justified to an extent. Supporters are entitled to the details that are being withheld from them even while reaching out to the producer. I am not encouraging future leaks but nonetheless, the backers have right to have become suspicious. After all, if Sarkeesian was capable of going into detailed arguments against negativity and harassment against her...Why has it been so difficult to share some insight on the documentary's progression?

Sarkeesian's Tumblr photo

Backers are obviously not looking for full outlines on Tropes vs Women's production, but just want some acknowledgement to calm their fears that their donations might be wasted. She claimed and promised that these games were going to be personally played for research, right? If so, then why could she have not taken thirty seconds to Tweet, "Playing <insert game> for TvW!" or "Filming has begun"?

Perhaps this outburst and backlash will be an eye opener on how the production team needs to handle their project. It is their responsibility to keep their backers informed. I give them credit for engaging their followers and allowing them a chance to personalize their experience by sharing their own opinions. I forewarn that if they continue to shun the backers, these generous efforts will mean nothing to them and ultimate lead to a continuation of disapproval from the gaming community. If disorganization is making it difficult to even give small updates, how can these supporters have faith that their funds are being used effectively?

After all, if Sarkeesian wants to keep this project in positive light, then a certain degree of professionalism needs to be constantly demonstrated, certainly more than is currently being shown.

It's a neat idea, but the lack of news is disheartening. Maybe they should do a behind the scenes thing like Double Fine is doing. While not as broad as they are doing with 2 player productions. Just a short video showing that it's being made and with photographs. Next to a scam, leaving backers in dark is not a wise thing to do. They put their money into this and they should know what is going on.
I personally understand this and what she is going to do. I mean, games like Darkwatch were really (hot) but very sexist. However, there are many diamonds in the rough that we can't forget like Uncharted that make female characters strong, outgoing and very capable characters. Although, the ass on Chloe through the whole damn game swaying back and forth was a bit much lol.
I do wonder how often this happens with Kickstarter. How many of them are funded and then fail to produce results? Are they even legally obligated to use this money for the stated purpose?

The uncertainty with the whole system and a major public example like this is why I've never donated to one yet.
I'm kinda with you, Perfidious Sinn. I can't be the only one that sees Kickstarter as just an easy way to beg for money?

I walk out on the street and say "give me $10,000 so I can buy a cheeseburger and make a film about it," I get a couple "F-You!" responses and possibly a "bite me, hippie." I go on the "intrenetz" and beg... I mean "kickstart" my idea, and people will just throw money at me, because of my PASSION for documenting the artistry of my cheeseburger eating exploits.

I don't get it.

I've said months ago that my plan for Kickstarting my own idea would be this...

Step 1) Ask people to donate $60,000 to fund my "life-size sculpture of Steve Urkel comprised of Slim Jims" idea.

Step 2) People I don't know, and I've never met, give me their money.

Step 3) I buy a bunch of Slim Jims and then I eat them, and then I take a plane trip to Mexico.

Step 4) The people who gave me their money bitch about how much the economy sucks.

Step 5) I come up with a new idea involving a cheese sculpture of the Eiffel Tower, which is a completely different idea that could in no way ever be traced back to me.

Repeat.

I am not knowledgeable outside of this blog entry with regard to this story, so I can't comment on the details. Sometimes you don't have the time to be able to go out and talk about what your progress is.. and sometimes it's not even a good thing TO update people of your progress. Especially if you're writing something, you don't want to stop and give someone an update of what you're doing and where you are. It throws not only your own concentration off, but gives you a feeling of accomplishing something even if you should really be going back and working over what you've already done. It can also give people false assumptions of where you are at... especially if those people are giving you money.

With that said... it is kind of odd that she has not found the time to give an update of her status, and yet, did find the time to ban one of her twitter followers for inquiring about it.

*shrug*
Her videos have always been full of misinformation and blatant lies, she outright deleted one once this tropes vs women thing got underway because it was a shining example of her lack fact finding.

Anita is someone that literally lives in her own bubble, she blocks any comment that doesn't agree with her and only approves those that heaps praise on her, plus she said she wanted to take an earnest look at tropes and women in games, look at that mountain games there, everything is from THIS generation, you're going to take a look at tropes and women in games, but you're going to focus only this generation? What kind of research project is that?

Hell look at the PC games, Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, I mean really? Of the mountain of PC games that exist, she just happened to pick 2 of the most high profile games on the market?

The whole being blocked thing simply because someone is asking for an update just seems fishy to me, I would not be surprised if they just took the money and did other things with it, I recall one kickstarter than outright admitted that they used the money they got to buy ipads for themselves, keep in mind that I've yet to see a single game or project come out of kickstarter. Even double fine has been curiously absent after getting 3 million dollars.

I find Anita to be completely full of shit and a coward, shit like this just further supports my viewpoints on her, I'm dying for her to release a video of this tropes thing so I can write a blog picking it apart.
Just saw this over at gootube.

http://www.youtube.com/user/gamesvstropesvswomen

Can't wait.
Wow, I had no idea any of this was going on. I mean, I hadn't heard any updates since her Kickstarter was funded, but I assumed it was just because I stopped paying attention.

Thanks for writing this up!
I'll hold off on launching into a knee jerk reaction to this, for another few weeks (it won't be knee jerk then at least), but damn. Really? She has time to get gussied up and take pics with games and swag, but not a tweet (right?) On progress or anything? Blocking people (who funded it!) from asking legit questions? I smell something fishy. Combined with her misinformation and lack of actually studying, what she's speaking about, this doesn't look good.
Thanks for the update on this! I thought about it recently, wondering what`s been happening.

Good on her for getting so much money together, and hopefully she'll deliver on her project... although I probably won't agree with most of what she says.

I do think that a lot of people gave her money for the wrong reasons, because of the criticism (some justified, some... very much not) over what she wants to do and some bullshit sense of internet chivalry. Because of this a lot of those internet white knights are going to be pretty disappointed, and it'll be their own fault for throwing their money away.
Pretty sure she's a scam artist but she's hot, so I'll allow it.
@Perfidious Sinn
No, nobody on Kickstarter has any obligation to the backers. Not for rewards or even a product. I don't think they could flip a double bird and run off into the night with the money, as I'm sure a lawsuit would at least be attempted. But as long as they don't mind their reputation being shot they can just delay and make excuses, and there's nothing anybody can really do about it.

Despite some companies using it as such, Kickstarter is not a pre-order system. It's an way to find projects to invest in, but like any investment there is no guarantee of a reward. If it legitimately fails, or even if you get ripped off, too bad. There's been projects that have already failed to deliver, or promised rewards that they couldn't possibly deliver.
I had no idea any of this was going on, I get the feeling that by the time she gets these videos out what she’s talking about will be out of date already, the games industry moves fast.

I still think people are a bit too eager to pile on the complaints when it comes to this woman, but this is the first time I felt some concern is warranted.
"One backer mentions in the comments that he captured a screenshot stating an estimated date on one of the Kickstaters' goals and Tweeted it to Sarkeesian asking for some explanation as to why the paid backers were being kept in the dark."

Not quite. The tweet referred to asked no question but merely served as passive-aggressive concern trolling. It has been deleted in the meantime but IIRC it was something along the lines of "Nice to know @femfreq has exceeded her deadline and backers have yet to see any rewards."

By the way, saying "the screencap had then been leaked" is kind of misleading. It was the complainant you mention who leaked it, and he did so before the tweet you referenced as the starting point. I spoke to this person myself - his hostility and lack of comprehension was clear for all to see.

"Up until a week ago, there had been no updates since the pledges were closed."

Updates have been issued periodically for backers, only being uploaded for the public to see at a later date.

While there is no doubt that such a project is difficult and time consuming to produce, she still had plenty of time to discuss Doctor Who with fans, promote other feminist blogs, and post pictures of herself with gaming memorabilia. Despite all of this activity, she was unable to provide any sort of update regarding the Tropes vs Women production."

I hope to god you're joking and you don't actually expect anyone with an on-going project to completely sever their lives from anything outside of that project.

Anyway, the point is somewhat moot since complainant in question has since completely apologized for his actions and admitted his behaviour as trolling after being called out by Sarkeesian. Here's the quote:

"I am terribly sorry about everything I've done. I thought I was fighting some information war. I thought I was sharing something you were trying to hold back but truthfully, even though I didn't realize it, I am no different than a troll. I deliberately spread misinformation to elicit a response from you, and now that I have one I feel awful. I have done a terrible thing, and I will do my best to fix it even though no amount of campaigning can completely undo what I've done.

This was all caused by my selfish desire for a response and my inability to closely read the updates. If anyone ever brings up this topic of discussion again, please link them to this: http://i.imgur.com/e4RgW.jpg

Again, my sincere apologies for the trouble I may have caused. Please remember, I do support this documentary and still am looking forward to it. I wouldn't have donated if I didn't think sexism in video games was an issue."

Hope that clears this up.
@Sir Legendhead - dammit shane!!
Kyousuke Nanbu:
"keep in mind that I've yet to see a single game or project come out of kickstarter."

For what it's worth, I've been playing FTL: Faster Than Light for a few days now ahead of its Sept. 14th release. It is lovely, hopefully they get a demo up on Steam soon after release.

On topic: There's no shortage of feminist opinions on the internet, and I have no faith that these will be presented in a novel or interesting way. I still don't understand why people donated so much money to this project which reads to me as "Give me money so I can 'research' video games full-time."

I feel a perverse pleasure in hearing that backers are getting agitated, and I'd be lying if I said I hope they don't get burned.
I fully support Sarkeesian's project, in theory. But, here's the thing: She bought over 300 games. Every gamer knows that each individual game is a big commitment. We're talking a rough average of 8 hours just to complete the single player campaign. (And she has games like RDR and every Assassin's Creed, which take far more time).

If she intends to play every single game to completion she would spend roughly 2400 hours just playing. Just playing. If she really intends to do this full time (40 hours/week), she will spend the next 60 works weeks doing nothing but playing.

That means that if she is doing things like synthesizing, writing, analyzing, AND playing, she will need WAY OVER 60 weeks to complete a project that I could complete in 2 weeks right now with no funding and no backlog. (Here's my unfunded thesis based on thousands of hours of gaming: most games are at least slightly misogynist).

I will never side with the man-babies who have comfortable suburban lives and still feel the need to hate a social movement they will never understand, but it seems pretty clear that Sarkeesian's project is destined to be underwhelming at the very least.
@Kyosuke Nanbu "never seen a kickstarter project"

Comedy Button.

There are probably more. Google exists.
@Stephen: OK, so she is updating and making progress? Good. Now I just hope she really looks into and researches these games/characters.
The fact that she purchased all those games straight away when she might never even get around to them for this project is bad enough, but she's purchased them before asking her backers for input and will likely be buying more. It really strikes me as irresponsible, especially since she's already using this surplus of cash to buy brand new filming equipment for herself too. There are lots of good causes that money could have gone to, and there's no indication she'll be doing anything but keeping it.

@Stephen
Your highlighting is rather biased. He's admitting a mistake, not that he was a troll. If you look at his twitter, it's clear he wasn't trolling, but concerned about the project and is now defending it.
I don't think she's a scammer or anything, and I'm sure these videos will see the time of day. These videos are going to take time with all the video capturing, editing, and her having to beat multiple games so I understand the wait, but I really think she could have handled this better. Like you said it's not much to ask for a quick update maybe just a photo of her editing a video or something simple like that.
@trev

He explicitly states that he was no better than a troll. It's right there in his words. Furthermore, I spoke with him directly - his behaviour was definitely concern trolling.
"I thought I was sharing something you were trying to hold back but truthfully, even though I didn't realize it, I am no different than a troll." and "I was trolling." carry very different meetings. The emphasis you placed on it only serves to vilify him for a mistake. You also concluded this person who is now defending the project has an agenda against it, so I still think you need to reevaluate. Really, it could have been put on his attempt to make things right to show support.

And is it really to the point where expressing concern and criticism is now trolling unless it's done in an approved manner and/or privately? I find it absurd and, frankly, really sort of pathetic because the difference between concern and trolling often comes down to the incredibly slanted opinions of the target of that criticism or its defenders. Only the least poignant criticisms are allowed out. I've seen it more than enough in certain webcomic authors to be tired of the non-responses it brings.

Am I going to be dismissed as a "concern troll" because I think she's spent wastefully, even though it would take over a year just playing to get through those games and she could have purchased what she needed, when she needed it?
Ironically Trev you selectively picked your quote to miss out on an important piece of information. What do you call somebody who deliberately spreads misinformation in order to garner atte ntion? He admitted of himself a pretty established definition of trolling. But whatever about semantics, don't let that defer from the overall point, being he admits fault.

As for the difference between a concern troll and a concerned supporter, people who are concerned but support a thing don't normally go out of their way to deliberately spread misinformation at several key sites in order to rile people against a thing prior to addressing the curator of that thing with destructive, hostile messages, publicising stilted interpretations of perceived wrongdoings by that person and actively seeking out other supporters in order to win them over against the thing the person supposedly supports? Hardly smacks of sincerity if you ask me.
First off, let me thank you all for the comments sharing your opinions.

Now, it seems the issue regarding Mike's Tweets and banning has sparked a bit of a debate.

...Saying "the screencap had then been leaked" is kind of misleading...

May I ask to what extent?

Mike did admit to leaking it but it was not his intention to to leak the information for the purpose of sabotage. The accused admitted to screen capturing the image out of fear of posts being deleted or censored which some commentators claim she has done on YouTube and Twitter before. He states that he tried contacting her privately first via email and twice on Kickstarter before posting it on her Twitter in an attempt to be recognized as she had ignored his previous attempts. People than began retweeting the image before it eventually ending up on Reddit; then to other sites and forums.

This is why I said it had been leaked. The information in the image were (the first) new details regarding the project's progression that were meant to be for the backers only. This information has now gone public when it was never suppose to be. If that is not an example of a leak, then please do educate us on what is.

Is Mike a troll?

Personally, I have not seen enough evidence that supports the idea of aggressive trolling. It is possible that comments or Tweets have been deleted either by Sarkeesian or Mike himself, or are no longer on the site's archives. Regardless, I fail to see how asking for clarification on details is 'trolling'.

He might have made claims that the production was falling behind schedule despite past Kickstart posts stating the information he requested. That does not justify labeling him as a troll. It only proves that he is an ignorant individual with difficulties in comprehension.

Regardless, this whole situation could have been avoided had Sarkeesian just replied or had better representation on the project's details. Which brings us to...

I hope to god you're joking and you don't actually expect anyone with an on-going project to completely sever their lives from anything outside of that project.

No, I do not expect someone to completely sever their lives. I and the backers, however, do expect someone who is leading a community-based project to not ignore the community that allowed the project to even be able to begin. As I stated before, simply sharing what games are being researched or even saying, "Filming now" is not something that is impossible to do. Backers could be satisfied by a handful of words every few days; words that honestly take less than thirty seconds to type in a Tweet that can be shared from a phone while riding on the bus or leaving the office or waiting for your coffee to be served.

She seems to have difficulties with properly communicating. What is being asked of her by her supports is not burdening nor is it overly demanding; it is what they rightfully are entitled to. These people donated because they believed in her cause; they are not investing in a business but are, instead, investing in an idea that thrives to improve the community. For a project with so much passion and desire for change behind it, you would think excitement would fuel the want to discuss details.

For someone who has a bachelor's in communication studies and a master's in social/political thought, you think the basics of socializing would not need to be retaught.
Given the context, I believe he's saying that he deliberately spread what turned out to be misinformation, because he was misinformed, and is admitting his mistake, not that he set out to destroy her reputation by intentionally lying. Would he have so easily turned around on it if his goal was to harm the project rather than to draw attention to what he saw as a problem?

I think it's a better message to say that this guy was incorrect and now is back to supporting the project than it is to throw him under the bus.
@Stephen Beirne
"What do you call somebody who deliberately spreads misinformation in order to garner atte ntion"

You?

@Steph
You'd be surprised how many people stayed for a masters just because they didn't want to (or know how to) deal with with the real world, so they put it off for a few more years. Not saying she did that of course, don't want to be accused of spreading misinformation. :p
Considering that she has made videos about this already, for a while now, for free - I don't see how anyone can ever truly come to the conclusion that their money isn't being completely, and totally wasted here. There's no way she's going to play that stack of games and come to some kind of conclusion she didn't already have. Her interview in Destructoid already had problematic, inaccurate assessments of Gravity Rush and Bastion, and she's supposed to blow through all those games and not miss things? It's just not going to happen.

In that stack, I see Blur, Dark Souls and Child of Eden. I mean, what? That right there already tells me she has wasted $180.
I haven't said anything publicly on the web about this before and this'll be the only time I say it on the blogs, 'cause I like Steph, but I'm tired of hearing/reading about this, and the next time I care will be when this crap ultimately backfires.

This whole thing is fucking stupid. If you think one woman (especially this one, inflated ego and all) can undertake a project like this by herself and also DO IT JUSTICE, then you're just as deluded as she is. That's a shitload of money that could've gone to a better cause, spearheaded by better people, and this'll just be more ammunition for anyone, whether they have a working brain or not, wanting to make the gaming community look like a bunch of retarded children.

Seriously, why the hell- whatever. My two cents are in the jar and I'm walkin' away.
@Nihil - love ya but this sentence might be coming across accidently or not as really fucking demeaning:

"This whole thing is fucking stupid. If you think one woman (especially this one, inflated ego and all) can undertake a project like this by herself and also DO IT JUSTICE, then you're just as deluded as she is."

Maybe if you had of said one person, but really?
@Trev
I agree with your closing point, although I'm not too lenient in trusting that Michael was in earnest. I know when I spoke with him, he wasn't at all interested in listening to what I had to say or in addressing my points. Instead, he redirected every tweet to be an opportunity to smacktalk Feminist Frequency. So while I'm inclined to agree that he now regrets his actions, I don't think his earlier error was entirely innocent.

@Steph
"May I ask to what extent?

I'm not saying it wasn't leaked, I'm saying it's misleading to use the passive tense as it disconnects blame with Michael. We know he leaked it to reddit, he said so much on his twitter. And from my understanding, he posted it on Reddit before sending her a message on Twitter. That turn of events changes the tone of the story significantly.

You should check out the messages he sent to her on several dates before this, incident - he says he sent this message twice on Kickstarter and several times through email (he says this in the comments on the Kickstarter page, btw), but you'll note it asks for information that was or has since become public information. In essence, that makes his issue with not getting a personal reply something more like "why didn't you pay attention to me!" rather than a quest for the truth.

Also, the updates to backers are sent out via email so screencapping it "out of fear of posts being deleted or censored" is not a valid excuse.

"Regardless, I fail to see how asking for clarification on details is 'trolling'."

Er, see my last post to Trev.

For the record, I didn't see any suspicious disappearance of tweets from the feminist frequency account related to this incident. It's possible I missed them but I don't think there were any to begin with. On the other hand, Michael (@theLEOpirate) did delete the "question" tweet that got him blocked out of regret for starting this ruckus. He also also since posted this link at least twice so it seems his regret is sincere.

As for your last few paragraphs, again, she has been communicating progress of the project. Updates have come irregularly but frequently enough. The information asked for is already out there. She does occasionally tweet about games that she's playing (for example, I think it was last week she was playing Ico). Backers know that she's working on the project, that she's playing games, that production has begun. To my knowledge most of the backers are satisfied with the level of communication already in place (but would of course still like more), you've just latched onto this one guy who has already admitted fault.

Yes she also tweets about Dr Who and other blogs, but saying she should stop that altogether and use that time to convey more information to the backers is to have unreasonable expectations of how she should live her life now that she has a project ongoing.

Furthermore, bear in mind that every time she gives out any information there's a slew of people who harass her on the content. You had TEAM ICO fans brimming with rage the other day because she spoke unfavourably of Ico. You have redditors and twitter trolls and blogs like this one jumping on the first chance to have at her with each new update, however tenuous the complaint might be. Even though she is communicating progress on the project, it's no wonder she might be disinclined to keep the stream of information going thick and heavy. It's worth considering.

@Nihil
Feminist Frequency is a team of people.
@Glow - No, not really. I could've said person, but I was referring to it being her brainchild (if it were a man on the face of it, I'd say one man, go-go-gadget-semantics), and it doesn't seem anyone on else on her "team" is helping to make her look like less of a hack.
@Nihil - Oh I thought you were stressing that one woman regardless of what woman couldn't handle it. I started to draw penises on pictures I had of you...I'll stop now.
S'all good, Glowbeans.

xoxo
I see this woman doing maybe half of her "in depth" research videos she promised before bailing out of the project.
"I know when I spoke with him, he wasn't at all interested in listening to what I had to say or in addressing my points."

Can you blame him?
