Xbox 360 overthrows Wii to become #1 selling console in Japan.
Steel Squirrel | 7:09 PM on 09.17.2008 17 comments

I didn't see that one coming, but according to IGN, it has happened.

I suppose the Japanese don't like to waggle as much as I thought, which is sad in a way. It tarnishes the funny mental image I have of Japanese people feverishly swinging a Wiimote.

I hope this shows Nintendo something though, that most of their shit is so weird, gimmicky, and boring that even the Japanese have started to notice it. : |
That's not good.

Do you think this will last or do you feel that the PS3 will make a splash later and overthrow the current throne that Microsoft now holds?

The PS3 stands in a distant 3rd place now [EDIT: for a week anyway =P] and I don't think the Japanese are as crazy about Wipeout HD and LBP, as some of you are around here. I'm not sure what's coming out any time soon that would sway the Japanese consumers to pick up a PS3.

I'm sure the FFXIII loss for Sony had something to to with this and as the IGN article says, there are a lot of JRPGs being made for the 360 now. I guess Japanese people like JRPGs, go figure.

Anyway, this was unexpected to me and speaks quite well for Microsoft and their ongoing effort to dominate the console market. I for one, am glad. It teaches Sony a valuable lesson that even the Japanese will not buy their console based on brand loyalty alone. I just find it somewhat satisfying to watch Sony struggle after coming out of the gate with such a shitty attitude and hope they realize that more effort is needed on their behalf to compete with Microsoft.

Also...

I hate Microsoft only when my Microsoft brand things don't work. I kind of admire their gusto for dominating this generation though.

well, Sony is actually overall second in sales in Japan while the 360 is way behind. This is in total sales to date. What you put up was just the weeks sales, most likely due to tales of vesperia.

Misleading IGN is misleading. The 360 could sell 300K or so next week and they'd still be below half of where the PS3 is now. New JRPG + price drop + hardware upgrade isn't going to do that, though it isn't treating them badly at the moment. Also thought it would be good to mention FF13 is not being released for the 360 in Japan, so it also couldn't have had anything to do with it. It's being ported when they do localization.

Well, when the 360 has a week that sells 25,000+ units or whatever and the PS3 only got 8000+ out the door, that kind of trend will place Microsoft in the dominate position eventually, amirite?

While the article is about a week's worth of sales,it still shows that Microsoft is gaining ground in Japan. The 360 sold 3 times the amount of the PS3, that's pretty substantial.

I'm just glad to see it happen, that's all.

Yes, it outsold the Wii... this week. Not overall. The 360 is so far behind in Japan it is laughable.

Nihon, you don't think it could be the beginning of a trend?

Or do you just think it's a spike due to TOV and Infinite Undiscovery?

I think it's feasible that the 360 could take off and sell like this every week given the strong lineup of games this year and in 2009. Even Japan can't deny that, especially when the 360 is now cheaper than the Wii and offers the same gaming experiences as the PS3 for less as well.

I didn't realize this article was just for weeks worth of sales at first, but now that I do, I think it still bodes well for Microsoft. You can't deny that.

LittleBigPlanet is perfect for Japanese audiences.

Yah, the 360 is a box for average to shitty JRPGs, but still JRPGs, so it will sell well for small bursts every 6-10 months in Japan.

@Dan

360 has plenty of decent to great RPG's. What JRPGs have you been playing?

"I'm sure the FFXIII loss for Sony had something to to with this"

Why? Japan doesn't get FFXIII or FFXIII VS. on 360.
