About Me
I'm 25 and I like video games!!! I'm a cheap-ass about it so I rarely have the newest stuff.

I own NES, SNES, Dreamcast, GBA, GBA Micro, GBA SP, DS lite, PSP slim, PS2, and a 360 Elite.

Also a PC of course, and the best game ever is Starcraft.

I work at Gamestop in Westfield, MA. Most Gamestops arn't cool. Mine is alright.

Other than games, I like photography, graphic design and hiking/camping. My hobbies are expensive :-(

If you go to my website, I will make happy at you!

Games are so short these days
Spykron | 8:03 PM on 09.11.2007 11 comments

I just read a review for heavenly sword and they say its great but so short. Same thing i hear with stranglehold, the darkness, bioshock...etc. It seems people are just making playable movies which is fine but who wants to spend 60 on a movie. games like assassins creed look like they will still be long, and halo 3 will have multi player to fall back on so i guess its not a industry wide thing. and honestly theres so many games in the world i want to play short ones are nice cause it lets you finish and then move on. but when will people get sick of paying 60 dollars for an interactive movie?

(p.s. i understand bioshock has a lot of replay value. maybe that was a bad example. oh well.)

Yeah, but there's a gajillion mostly multiplayer shooters coming out soon, not to mention other types. COD4, Halo3, Crysis, ET:QW, UT3, TF2, etc.

Yep, agree completely, worst offender I've found personally though was prey, took me a whole 5 hours on PC for that game... Playing Blue Dragon atm though 60 hours into that so far but running round for stuff I missed, found a boss which keeps whipping me, so its leveling time :D lol. so its not all short, sweet trips down the sugar path. That game however isn't for everyone. I can't remember a game other than that recently thats taken me over 8 hours to complete :( which sucks.

What's "short" anyway.. A game that you can play through in 4 hours can be worth the money if you get to actually have fun playing through it again and again. Best exemple of that is Super Metroid. This game is short to today's standard, but every play through is a blast. Can't say the same thing for most games nowadays. What's better, 60 hours games with no replay value, or 10 hours games that you can play through 3 or 4 times withouth getting bored?? I'll vote for the 10 hours game.

Yea I found that with most games now days they make them short which is fine if you have good multiplayer on it.

Most long games are RPG's and they are only long because you take hours to level up.

The best game for time I've played is Half Life 2, even if you don't count episode 1, and it has awesome replay value. I've prolly played through it 4 or 5 times, and I still randomly play through levels when I feel like it.

Short to me personally is a game I can complete sub 10 hours, with no incentive to either replay (different endings/something I've not seen that I've heard is a nice twist) Don't get me wrong some games that are short can be fun, its just that empty feeling of wanting more, hard to put into words. But I'm sure you felt it at some point, halo 2 was the one that hit that home the most for me as a friend of mine put it "I was expecting the next level to load".

Just because you can complete a game in 4 hours doesn't mean you should. Maybe you should start setting yourself personal challenges. Try and see if you can keep you health above 70 in most cases, allow yourself an exception if you get cornered or something, but just reload if you don't get it perfect. Maybe you should just start taking your time, working out tactics, playing the game with a little more intensity than just rushing them to get to the next area.

Tbh, I have trouble getting through games because I'm too much like this. I've spent ages on Doom 3 checking every single nook and cranny to make sure I haven't missed a PDA or an early gun upgrade or a special secret area that'll give me a greater tactical advantage, etc. I tend to play games on super hard if I find the first level too easy, or if I feel like I want more of a challenge, because I owe it to the game to put effort in.

Agree with Ugly Phil. A lot of people seem to rush through games, then bitch about them being too short... why not just take the time to enjoy them in the first place?

I think with the gamer points they're counting on the replay value - and the greedy industries don't care that they're making interactive movies that won't hold you over for very long, its not their loss.
