Should I buy a PSP?
Spotlight51 | 9:03 AM on 03.22.2009 24 comments

(Sorry for that, i feel bad every time i think of Sony's advertisement schemes too.)

For about a month now, i have been going crazy with decisions, ranging from not so important (should i main Chun Li or Dan or Blanka) to life altering important (mostly school related). And i was recently encountered with a proposition to go visit Vancouver, Canada to look at the collages i am borderline obsessed with (which is odd for a child who slacks off in school such as myself). I of course willfully accepted due to the fact that i love that place so much more than where im currently residing, and also because i am getting an all expenses paid ride their. So there i was a few nights ago, thinking about how awesome my trip would be during an intense online match of Ken Fighter 4 (seriously not to bitch, but 7 in a row, then after i got an even mix of him and other shoto's), and i hit a major roadblock in my head. I thought to myself "what the hell am i gonna do on a plane for five hours alone that doesn't involve me getting tackled and anally searched by the FBI". As a panicked i quickly setup a list of the following choices...
1.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1411666798?ie=UTF8&tag=sirlinnet-20&link_code=as3&camp=211189&creative=373489&creativeASIN=1411666798
2. Buy a DS (despite the fact i sold my last one for a quad core cpu.)
3. Buy a PSP
4. deleted i should read cblog rules first i am an idiot

So after analyzing through these options, i decided that three would be the best option (despite the lasting appeal of 1 and 4.) However, as me not being the biggest sony fan ever (was terrified when my parents bought me a PS1 rather then an N64 when i was a child, barely used my PS2 despite its huge category of games, and recently bought a PS3 for MGS4, played through it multiple times, then sold it days later for more money) i need some familiarization with the PSP. I again made a list, this time of questions i needed to ask you all for help from the PSP.

1. Do you know where i can buy a PSP 1000, i want to buy this one because i am recently going broke due to my fanaticism of upgrading my PC among other reasons.
2. How much better are the PSP 2000 or 3000 compared to the 1000, I'm mostly conserned with screen quality, backlight, and battery life among anything else.
3. What are some good titles availble for the PSP, the only ones i know of is Patapon, Locoroco, God Of War, and Street Fighter Alpha 3.
4. Truthfully, how many batterys do you think i would need to sustain a psp for a 5 hour long flight.

I would greatly appreciate your help with this prediciment i have here, I trust you guys cause i have yet to run across a website with people as knowledgeable with games and awesome as yourselves.

P.S: this is my first blog post here at DTOID, i have been lurking around for a little more then two years and never post because for some reason i can never get embedded into any online community due to laziness. And yes i know this was a bad introduction, but it was better then "hey my name is Spotlight, i like games and women".

P.P.S: if you were wondering i stuck with chun li as my main due to the fact that i use her in every game she is in besides MVC2. If you want to kick my *ss in SF4 i would be happily ablilged to play you, my XBL tag is Spotlight51.

IM PLAYIN NUTS! Now Im gonna go watch that cartoon! THANKS!

Oh wait....you want to know what I think??

WELL THEN!

If you getting a PSP get the 2000 or 3000. There a better model, and I dont think they make 1000 model anymore. ALSO and this is most important and can go for any console your thinking of purchasing, look how much money your willing to spend, really read into what the console can and cannot do, what extra features does it come with besides just playing video games. Then look at the library, find the games which you think you will most enjoy start with first part exclusives then work your way out to third party exclusives then to third party multi platform. Then once you have put some time into figuring out what you want, get it and be happy.

Hi, welcome to the wonderful world of Dtoid blogging. I'm champion portable gaming, so let's see if I can HALP.

1. Obviously Craigslist and eBay are worth looking at for a PSP 1000. I'd be aware that it could be a minefield though, for failed hacking attempts lead to bricked PSPs, and they might be trying to sell those off. I know in England, PSP 1000 were easy to find in Gamestation stores. Try a local secondhand place.

2. I have a PSP 1000 myself and may upgrade later, but right now my old PSP 'fat' is perfectly fine. Since your money is tight, and since the PSP doesn't get that much use when it comes to new games, reducing your investment is always recommended. The PSP 1000 has great lighting anyway, so you won't be buying a significantly inferior product. PSP Fats are a hacker's dream too, so if you wanted to do homebrew, this could be used for that.

3. Tales of Eternia, FF VII: Crisis Core, Liberty City Stories, MGS: Portable Ops. They'll keep you entertained for a while.

4. One extra battery should suffice, but you'd need to keep the screen dimmed to the lowest. In my flights from the UK to the US, I'd managed to play my PSP to near-death on one battery, but the use wasn't constant.

Hope that helps.

^^^^ well, i actually just found out that gamestop sells refurbished psp 1000's for 119$ and 2000's for 129$.
I would be willing to spend that much with the addition of extra memory.

As you were saying about reading up on the product. I have been, however i cannot find the differences of the three models besides size, inside hardware, and price. That's mostly why i came here

One other thing to possibly take into consideration when choosing which PSP model to buy is that the 2000 and 3000 can be hooked up to a TV and thus played on a larger screen - obviously if you're mainly planning to use it "on the go" it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but figured I'd mention it.

Also, if you're going to play fighters on it, make sure you mod the d-pad (it's not a big deal, just Google it).

In terms of games, I'd recommend Konami's shooter collections (Gradius, Parodius, Twinbee, Salamander, though you'll have to import all but the first) and Hudson's "Soldier" collection. Disgaea is also good, especially if you don't have the PS2 version, and Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles is a great deal as well, especially if you pick up the GH version for 20 bucks.

If you DO happen upon a nice PSP-1000, you'll be happy to know that it's the easiest platform on which to install custom firmware, which opens up the options in a big way.

To pipe up about less-than-legal matters, if emulation is important to you, the PSP is an even better system than its stock library makes it to be. It easily handles a good portion of the SNES library, as well as NES, GameBoy through Advance, and there's even work on an N64 emulator (but hope that it'll run 100% is kinda low, sadly). Not to mention, it supports most of the PS1 library too. Those factors alone were the deciding factors for me getting the system after all.

But for PSP-only games, Jeanne D'Arc, Phantasy Star Portable, both Star Oceans, shooter collections that BulletMagnet listed, and a few PSN titles are definite keepers.

Yeah, the custom firmware can't be ignored. Most PSP owners I know site that as the #1 reason why the own the console.

For me, it's all about Mega Man: Powered Up, Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, Darkstalkers Collection, Gradius Collection, Metal Gear Solid: Portable, Loco Roco 1 & 2, and Patapon.

Once again, Capcom proves they are the most kick-ass 3rd party on the planet. If it weren't for them, I'd probably never gotten a PSP. Konami, as usual, comes in a close second.

I would get a PSP, as long as you're willing to put up with the tiny library of good games. Getting a PSP 1000 is a terrible idea, though; I know someone who has one, and he can't play some of the best games for the system. In terms of what games to buy, I'd look at Patapon, Daxter, LocoRoco, Tekken 5, FF: Tactics (If you like grind), Syphon Filter (Which is the only portable shooter that I've played with good controls), Midnight Club 3, and WipeOut.

Jurnigan, you said that your friend who has a 1000 cant play some games, which games cant he play, shouldnt they all be playable on each system?

Not to be a dick, but if you're going to visit colleges, you might want to make sure you spell the word correctly.

Also, it's there, not their.

You can thank me later when you wow these schools with your grammatically perfect applications.

short answer YES.
long-ass answer: I definitely recommend buying the system it has a very good backlog and despite a shitty year in 2008, 2009 is already looking great for it with games from both sony and 3rd parties.
also if you could get a psp 2000 model go for it. It has the hackability plus lightness

Get a psp 2000 (or 1000, if its significantly cheaper and still in good condition) and put the ol' custom firmware on it. In fact, since that can be difficult without access to an already custom'd psp and will most likely cost you a battery (you have to open it up and mess with it to put it in 'reset' mode, which can be permanent), if you want custom firmware it would probably be worth searching for one that already has it.

As for games, theres many decent titles on the system, but few I can flat out recommend. If you like Tekken, Dark Resurrection has no major issues I can think of. Similar with the Wipeout games, and Burnout: Legends is essentially Burnout 3, so its plenty of fun. God of War feels a bit gimped to me (compared to its ps2 elders), but its still impressive for the psp and is worth a look.

I think many of the other games are an acquired taste. Personally, I love the Monster Hunter games, but you shouldnt buy them without trying first, or an option to return.

Emulation, on the other hand, kicks ass, and is the main reason im using mine. Can play ridiculous amounts of Final Fantasy 1 through 9, with some Advance Wars and Sonic 2 on the side, oh hell yes!

Finally, theres a ton of apps available to users of custom firmware, you can have a search around for whatever takes your fancy. Unfortunately for Sony, theyre never gonna be able to make up for this stuff, but theyre in a bit of a bind, they cant just give it a pass. Sucks for them, but not for us... :P

I'd say, if the 2000 isn't too much more money, go with that one. It's smaller, lighter, and a pretty decent upgrade from the 1000, and doesn't have the weird screen interlacing issues that seem to be plaguing the 3000.

Battery depends on what you're doing. UMD movies burn power a little faster than games. In general, though, I agree that one extra battery is probably sufficient.

For games, there may not be a huge library (I honestly use my PSP-2000 substantially less than my DS), but there are some gems out there. Jeanne D'Arc and Final Fantasy Tactics are awesome if you're into SRPG's. Patapon and LocoRoco are fun, goofy games that deserve to be played by everybody. I'd also suggest Puzzle Quest or Lumines as good puzzle options.
Right now I'm playing Star Ocean (the remake of the first one), old school JRPG goodness, and seriously looking at Phantasy Star Portable.

I just picked up a PSP-2000 around Christmas time and I really am enjoying the system a lot. I would highly recommend a 2000 version due to the smaller size, longer battery, and the ability to hook it up to the tv. I usually play via tv and since it outputs everything to the tv, it does extend the battery life a significant amount.

However if you are going to go a PSP-2000 model route, browse some forums to find the conversion to the model number to the motherboard version. The most recent 2000 systems (typically with official firmware version 4.0 or greater installed) have a newer motherboard revision (similar to the PSP-3000), which has not been hacked yet. I ended up purchasing one of these PSP, which does kind of suck since I have to play from the UMD disc instead of making an ISO of my game. However, it is only a matter of time until it gets hacked, so if you can wait a little bit I would definitely get a PSP-2000.

Really good games that I would recommend on a plane would be:

1) Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
- Great tactics based game that you can play very short spurts, but will last you about 20 hrs.
2) Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
- The Rondo of Blood remake is really superb and I think is the best original style Castlevania game to date. Also you can unlock Symphony of the Night too, which is the best Metroidvania style game. So you basically get the two best Castlevanias in one package.

P.S. If you are going to custom firmware route, again do some research on the matter before doing it. You are going to need an additional battery and memory card do perform the conversion.

Well i should probably invest some time into finding out all of the custom firmware stuff, i think i can buy a psp from my friend (a 1000 one). I am usually good with software modding so the 1000 is good for me. I might consiter the 2000 but i have bad luck with hardware mods (last thing i hard modded was my SF4 stick, and it turns off almost every time i do a up left or up right motion.) Thanks for all the help guys, any more tips on games will be appreciated.

I highly recommend the 2000 series. Especially if you are into CFW, the 2000 series will probably have some neat extra capabilities soon (better emulation for certain emulators, tv-out, better multi-tasking) that make it worth it. The only issue is making sure you have the right mobo.

Also, I recommend getting a http://www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=127 for battery life. I think that's the same brand I have, and it adds a significant amount to the PSP's battery life, while being fairly cheap and also being useful in terms of making the system more comfortable. It's also easier to charge it and the main battery at the same time (vs. charging one battery and then the second).

As for games, I think we all have different tastes. I'd say I'm personally all about Mega Man Powered Up, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, Castlevania X Chronicles, FF 7 Crisis Core.. to some extent, the Star Ocean remakes, God of War, Jeanne d'Arc, Street Alpha 3, the Metal Slug anthology, etc. I highly recommend getting the CFW.

I've loved my time with the PSP. I waited until the PSP-2000 was on shelves for a while to get it so that the game library would diversify some, so that I could get a slimmer system, and b/c I didn't really want the 3000's screen. I have 8 games right now and have had 6 others I've sold back.

The system is more diverse than the DS, can do much more with its firmware, has a decent and growing online store, and honestly, it just has better looking games.

As for the battery, two should get you through just fine if both are charged up.
