Death of Friends Code??
Spitfire | 6:38 PM on 04.24.2008 15 comments

Steve Totilo over at MTV blog has a real awesome interview with the guys at Majesco over their new game Blast Works.

Kevin Ray,Chief Technology Officer, sheds some like at breakthroughs in Wii multiplayer gameing.

Multiplayer: How did you get around the Friend Code issue?

Ray: Every Wii has a guaranteed unique ID (GUID) that identifies the device. If you look in the Address Book on your Wii you can see this number called the Wii Machine ID. We reference this ID when you connect to the site. The combination of a secure network connection and this unique Wii Machine ID allow us to seamlessly integrate the web site with your Wii and bypass any cumbersome login procedures. It also allows us to implement a directory-service that is above the cumbersome method of remembering friend-codes and allow players to find one another based on real name, user name, favorite game, geographic region, etc.

WHA?!?!?! Unique ID AND directory system. Fucking JAWESOME. Why the shit did the makers of this system not decide to do this.?

Nintendo the ball is in your court to use this for every multiplayer game.

Yeah, it's awesome that it's on a game like Blast Works.

grargh this sounds like it could be awesome!

Watch Nintendo force them to use friend codes anyway.

Nintendo will probably stop them from doing that... Why can't we have this for Brawl, or every online game? I don't see how friends code over a username protect children from predators.

I think the fact it's on a game called Blast Works is a fucking slap in the face to Nintendo.

If they did it so simple, why can't Nintendo?

I might actually check out Blast Works, if only to see how well the online system works.

@cjp

The game is essentially Tumiki Fighters, it's been renamed on purpose.

Why would Nintendo be upset with this? They're already letting EA get away with throwing out Frend Codes. 3rd Parties can do what they want with regards to online. The reason a lot stick with Friend Codes is because that's the system Nintendo put in place and are offering support for. Good for these guys, more developers need to follow suit.

Of course, the downside is that this limits accessing your account from a different Wii (say when you're over at a friend's place), and I'm not sure how multiple users on one console would work.

Server-side account registration?

@The-Excel

Im not sure what Nintendo's stance on server-side accounts are, seeing as they have saved account data locally in a seperate space like on Guitar Hero 3 and Brawl. Thats why you cant copy your GH3 or Brawl stuff and load on another console.

Maybe its a cost thing for the servers or even a protection issue, like their use of friend codes. Then again, wasnt Nintendo that said "People dont want online play?"
