Are Game Trailers And Pre-Release Hype Ruining Games & Gaming?
Special K | 3:42 PM on 01.18.2009 19 comments

Dont get me wrong. when ive been waiting for a game to be released which i like the sound of but now thats its a long way to release i love seeing some screenshots or hell even just abit of a teaser trailer, but sometimes i think some companies might be overdoing it abit. Now the obvious one that comes to mind when i say this was army of two. Remember army of two?

before this game was released i couldnt go a week without turning on my xbox or PC without being punched in the face by some " brand new trailer featuring revolutionary game play footage! ". I was genuinely excited for this game. It looked awsome. The whole co-op thing looked amazing, and when your tipping a game to be the co-op experience of the future (or something like that) you wouldnt let down your audience would you?

...hmmmm would you really?
Apparently you would, huh who knew.

I cant tell if it was just me but i was sad when i finished this game. I wanted to love it i really did. I bought this game at midnight on the release date and took it too my friends house and we played it through in one sitting. In these amazing trailers i saw things like flipping parts of fallen buildings to make cover, hovercraft through the desert, and to top it all off a machine gun mounted on a forklift truck. What sort of person dosnt think that is cool. And the footage looked good, REALLY good.

So why was i so disappointed? Because i never really got any of that stuff. What did i get? Well lets see. You could bunk you partner up onto higher ledges, not exactly the most thrilling mechanic to enter a game. I DID get my hovercraft... but on water...where it belongs... wheres the fun in that i ask you. It makes me wonder. Would i really have been disappointed if i wasnt teased all these features only to have them taken away?

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

I warned my friends away from that game. But they caved like yourself. They just whored the achieves from it and never touched it again.

But it was fun engaging the little positive and negative vignette things =P.

duh...I just played an AWESOME game and all the gaming sites wrote it off as a horrible game not worth bothering with. I wish I bought it new...

yes i did cave, shamefully. the game could have been so much better and it was fun at points but the bad stuff kinda out weighed the good in the end.

there making a sequal aswell... oh well im sure it will give me something to write about ^_^

PN 03...It was so good I need to buy it and I want to post a bloggy about it. Everytime I heard about it, all I heard was horrible things and that it was the worst game on GameCube. I'd rather play it than PoP (this gen).

Hype is bad if the game company's say untrue stuff about a game (Fable), but it can be a good thing if a game lives up to the hype.

i would defiantly agree. unfortunatly i think we see and hear alot of untrue hype more often. peter molyneux is an obsessive liar i swear

i think if companys are gonna release material to do with their games then they should at least keep the stuff they have shown off in the game. if not its nothing but smoke and mirrors

Hype is the fault of the man/woman watching those trailers and videos. Keep that integrity and remain as objective as you can juuust in case, but not so much that it ruins the excitement.

thats is true, but is it not true that these companies should at least stay true to the source material in some ways?

They should, but they won't. At the end of the day they are trying to sell a product and will do whatever they can to get the hypetrain rolling. It's sad what money does, but like I said, everyone should always be wary with hype-building material.

we need game trailers etc. Otherwise we have to go by boxart like the old days/

im not saying that game trailers as a whole are bad. its just when they keep pushing out new ones almost like every other day. i meen thats all fine as long as the content stay true in the retail version but sometimes its not which can be really shitty especially if you see something in the trailer you look forward to and you never even see. for example, remember that halo 2 video which was like a play through of the supposed first level which never even made it too the game. i just find it pretty shocking when things like that happen. in my opinion unless the makers arnt 100% on these segments or features making the final game then they be showing us

and NUKKAJDAV i agree totally

I really wish people did more viral marketing, Shadow of the Colossus had the coolest Ads.

CHARLIETIME - i love viral marketing. its a great way to hype a game and its great to follow the clues. makes it all the more fun. plus this way your not really promising anything to the gamer and if you dont wanna follow it, then you dont have to

ZOMBIELOVER - you read my mind haha

this is why you watch hype but still remain critical and take time to step back and look at the game for what it is. There are games which I don't even bother with checking out, because I know I'm going to buy it anyways or I won't buy it. Every gamer has an instinct, hone it.

I try not to watch any advertising for a game outside of the very first one I see.
