I have been playing videogames my whole life. The first system I ever played was the ColecoVision. The first game I can remember playing was Pitfall. They have flash based games made by elementary school kids that look and play better than Pitfall these days but back in the day that game rocked.

I enjoy First Person Shooters, Adventure Games, and RPGs mostly.

It has been a while since I have had an opportunity, or a inspiration to do any digital art. I have been bored at work this week and decided to work a little on my lighting skills.

I know Halo 3 is old news but I played it with a friend over the weekend and came up with the idea for the art below while playing it.

Below is the Master Chief using a plasma grenade as an improvised light source. The chief render is from Planetrender.com and the background is from Bungie.net.

Done in Photoshop CS3.

This is my first real attempt at manual lighting.

Not that it's terrible, it's just you didn't do too much with it. You should have followed the contours of his suit more, some of the light is in the wrong places. Also, bloom the plasma grenade a bit more, it doesn't capture the glow a real (well, faithful) plasma grenade should have. And make the background/surroundings a bit darker so it actually seems like he would need to do that. A cool idea though.

The lighting effect of the plasma grenade might be more impressive if the environment was darker. It appears as if the Master Chief is coming inside out of a fairly bright outdoor area, so there isn't enough contrast between the two.

I appreciate the fact that you came back and quantified your previous comment. Most of my experience with graphic design, unfortunately has been basic copy/paste stuff that I do for work so I did this piece mainly as practice to see who I could do with manual lighting. I will post the original two images so you can see exactly what I looked like before I changed it.
