A Rare DS Game Just Got Rarer
Sonic9jct | 7:49 PM on 09.24.2009 27 comments

Do any of you guys remember that Club Nintendo exclusive Game & Watch Collection for the DS? The one that you had to buy $800 worth of games just to acquire? (1 point = about $1) Well, if you were holding out or saving up just to afford it... you're too late. Sometime last week, Nintendo silently took this rare, odd, but fun little game down from the Club Nintendo prize listing. Does this mean something else is very close behind? Most likely. But for now, those of you who managed to obtain a copy of this super-retro piece of Nintendo history now own a game that could potentially be in short supply for generations to come. As someone who got it ASAP, I must say it was worth it. Three perfect ports of Game & Watch classics? --Oil Panic, Green House, and Donkey Kong-- count me in!

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

Ehh, I deiced it against using mine on it. As cute as it was in theory, it's only 3 games, which you can easily play elsewhere. Here's hoping for Tingle's Baloon Fight!

I'm OK with this because the Game and Watch series is coming to DSiWare.

Seconded on Tingle's Balloon Fight, or anything Tingle for that matter.

Yeaahhh, i was also excited to get it sometime but it doesnt feel that worthy of the points unless they show something really worth. *cough*LIKEADSPORTOFMOTHER3JUSTSOTHEFANSTHATREALLYWANTITCANAFFORDIT*cough*

I'd find Tetris DS more worth of hunting.

I don't mean that LITERALLY. You get 30 pts for registering DS games (which typically cost $30) and 50 for Wii games (which typically cost $50) and you also get random points by doing surveys. I didn't even buy all those games either. It took about 19 games to get enough points, and most of that came from bugging my friends for the registration codes (I've already got 700 points back right now!)

@Everyone else
You guys are saying that it sucks... without having played it. Trust me, you might think it's a bit craptacular, but it's not. You have to really be retro-minded to enjoy it fully, but considering that they stopped making Game & Watches 30 years ago and Game & Watch Galleries about 10... this is a pretty welcome addition. They are quite fun, and play alot like a weird hybrid of arcade games and rhythm games. There's a reason it stayed in my DS for about a month. And even if they DO come out on DSiware, us collectors definitely have something special on our hands. ;]

And the only reason I haven't gotten those incredibly tempting Hanafuda cards is because I'm afraid s soon as I buy them, Tingle's Balloon Fight might come out. And I couldn't live with myself if I missed THAT.

You got Pokemon Platinum? I got an extra code for it, if you'd like it, you can take that off my hands. Unless someone else wants it...

If I didn't have those already on the Game & Watch Gallery games- and if I had enough coins- I would have gotten it. Actually, might be a good time to pick up the Japanese one now on eBay, before demand skyrockets...

But yeah, supposedly they will be adding some new items this month, so that likely has something to do with it.

Seriously, though, they should do a full on Game & Watch Gallery 5. A lot of those modern versions were great.

Sonic9ct: The Game&Watch for DS isnt as bad as G&W2. Its nice to be a little retro, but for the most part, it was almost a slap in the face. I mean, its really great for nostalgia purposes. But nintendo really half assed it. I literally played it for 10 minutes before never picking it up again. G&W collection 1 is better, but not nearly as good as my next paragraph.

I will, however, make a note that if you do not already have "Game and Watch Gallery 1-4" you are missing out on some of the best hand held gaming you will ever come across.

1-2-3 are for GB/GBC and 4 is for the advance. You need these games. You can play the classic versions, or new re-imagined versions.

They manage to cram 6 games into each one, along with galleries, timelines, and in some cases, bonus games. They are cheap to find at used retro stores, and some gamestops if they still have anything left from the get rid of all GB games.

Get them. I swear to you, you will wonder why nintendo didnt released THESE instead of the classic game and watch.

I got mine off eBay several weeks ago for about $20. Glad I got it before the inevitable price jump. I'd really like the Hanafuda cards, and if nothing else shows up I'll be putting my points towards that, since eBay seems to only have the Japanese version (probably the same, but without the English instructions). Even if I spend the points, I'm sure Tingle's Balloon Fight will show up on eBay as well. What I'd love to see even more would be that speech-controlled Power Rangers rip-off that Nintendo made up as a bonus for Club Nintendo in Japan. It'd need more localization than G&WDS or Balloon Fight, but it'd probably be much more entertaining.

"Manage to cram 6 games into each one"

Oh come on, I'm sure they could have fit much more on there if they wanted to. "Cram" is hardly the correct word to use there. Still, I always meant to pick them up...

@ Necros

Technically, 10-12 games in each one, because I'm pretty sure the first one only had 5 games.

But, like I said, they have the classic versions, and newer "graphically enhanced" versions, which have a a lot more animation that the originals.
Cram is probably wrong, but you seriously get a lot of stuff on each game.

I envy you immensely because I had around 700 points towards it and was hoping to be able to get it, but now probably never will.

couln't you buy the actual Game and Watch games for less than $800? Or you know, go for a holiday in Japan.

Game & Watch Gallery 1 had only 4 games, but unlike the later collections they were all good ones. Gallery 2 bumped that up t o 5 I believe, with one unlockable. Gallery 3 had, uh, 9 or 10, with 4 or 5 unlockable but without modern modes for the extra ones. Gallery 4 has a shitload, including Zelda, but that takes a while to unlock (still haven't gotten there, myself.) #4 also has 3 of the 4 games from the first Gallery (no Oil Panic) although Manhole does not have a modern mode as it is one of the unlockable Museum games.

Of course, the annoying thing about the Gallery games is compromises are made when displaying the dual screen games, which the Collection naturally has no problem with.

And while I'm here, the Modern version of Octopus is great. I love that song.

Proud owner of the game. If I were allowed to register all the GameCube and Game Boy Advance games I'd purchased, I could have got the game 3 times over.
I think I still have about 500 points, at least.
