Awesome graphics
You probably clicked the title thinking that I was going to go on some ignorant rant about bad graphics or something. Graphics have indeed evolved. I look at games like Heavy Rain and I am blown away. This isn't about 3D graphics though. This is about the evolution of 2D graphics. Why haven't they evolved? Don't get me wrong, they have evolved in titles like
Odin Sphere,
Muramasa: The Demon Blade,
Blazblue, and
King of Fighters XIII. But it's just a handful.
Odin Sphere was released on a dying system in standard definition,
Muramasa was pawned off to the lower resolutions of the Wii,
BlazBlue will probably not reach a huge market for the fact that it is a poorly marketed new fighting game IP, and
King of Fighters XIII will not be too successful because it's a
KOF game.
Sadly big companies will look at this game as an example of 2D failing in the market.
Most of us grew up on 2D graphics. When the NES came out we were shocked by the quality it had over the games on the Atari-like systems. When the 16 bit era came in we had the same reaction. When the 32-bit era came in- well... it started to fade. That excitement for colorful sprites was being replaced by pixelated trashy looking 3D games. I am not really bashing those 3D games though. I understand it needed it's infancy just as much as the 2D era did with Atari. By the 64 and beyond though, 2D was dead. With only a few games carrying the torch. These games were unpopular new franchises though (Tomba anyone?). We needed the franchises that got us where we were at to continue carrying the 2D torch. They could have done this while ushering a new era of 3D. Mario has done this to an extent. It's Paper Mario games has stayed 2D and have obviously been successful. So then why don't more companies take this route? Take this route on more than the DS or PSP.
I think it's sad that the few games coming from Vanilla Ware (
Odin Sphere,
Muramasa) were released on a dying system, or with the Wii, a system with a crappy resolution and too much competition from crappier titles. They could be part of the evolution of 2D gaming. A lot of you will say,"HD doesn't matter,
Odin Sphere looks great either way". I say to you: No, it does matter.
Super Street Fighter II HD Remix has "HD" in the title for a reason.
Get an HD television.
This, but in HD.
You might say that it is too risky to test the market with such titles. They wont sell to the masses. No, it will. It will sell without a doubt. Here is an example of a game that I believe would sell over a million copies without fail:
Sonic the Hedgehog 4
This game would have nothing but hand drawn artwork and sprites. The game would run at the smoothest framerate possible and it would blow fucking minds. Even the casual "GRAPHICZORGOHOME!" crowd will understand that this game could only be done on today's hardware. You may say that it will fail because the Sonic fan-base has been betrayed time and time again. No, it will not fail. Take
Mega Man 9 for example. While it isn't an new hand drawn HD Mega Man. People still forgot all of the shitty games between it and the older ones and bought the shit out of it. SSFIIHDR sold tons of copies as well. Make Sonic 4. It will sell. It will sell without a doubt.
This is what I am talking about. Even better though.
If big names like Sonic would do this, it would bring a new era of 2D gaming that the people would love. Imagine if
Strider came out with a hand drawn sequel? Streets of Rage, Metal Slug, Final Fight, Battletoads, Castlevania, Metroid? Come on people. Make these games! I have been waiting since the SNES for graphics to improve! That is unacceptable.
I don't want 3D games to die. I want them to enhance tenfold. But why kill 2D in the process? You want to kill hand drawn art? For it to forever be reduced to the Gamestop pre-order concept art-book? I am not saying that 3-Dimensional graphics should replace 2-dimensional graphics.
I am just saying that the sculptor never replaced the painter.
My only comment is "Boy and his Blob" :D
My name is Diego Moreno, and I approve this message.
If rocket Knight Adventures gets a new release with the traditional 2D structure, I want it to be on PS3 or XBOX360 ON RETAIL. As much I love the Nintendo Wii for getting closer in this track, I think other consoles should experiment with this.
Agreed. Stuff like Bionic Commando Rearmed should serve as a good reminder for people the joys of 2D gaming.
2D graphics haven't "evolved" because 2D games are among a dying breed, and have been since arguably Mario 64.
A lot of 2D games now a days are not going to sell very well to begin with just because of one reason: most 2D games are part of small/niche IPs that aren't put out by huge publishers or advertised very well.
King of Fighters XII and BlazBlue are not going to sell well simply because they aren't Street Fighter or Tekken. Fighting fans will for sure buy them, but they don't have big name recognition nor will be promoted as heavily as SFIV was or Tekken 6 will be.
Odin Sphere wouldn't have sold any better had it been released in the middle of the PS2's lifespan. That is the definition of sleeper hit game, critically acclaimed, but doomed to sell poorly. The same will go for Muramusa. And that has part to do with the fact that unless you're a BIG franchise, a hardcore game on the Wii is going to do mediocre in the sales department despite good press (Madworld)
The fact of the matter is, in a world where it is hard to get a 3D game off the ground, big developers aren't going to risk going back to 2D when all the raving idiots who don't know any better are just looking for a game with the best graphics, and when they'll see something in 2D, they'll ignore it. Thus you'll never see a 2D sonic game on anything past the Nintendo DS or PSP maybe.
Will Blazblue, KoFXII, Muramusa, and A Boy and His Blob probably be great games? Yeah. Will they sell? nope. Is that because they're 2D? No, it is because they're small games with small publishers that don't have enough money to advertise them as much as they would like.
SFIV and SSFIITHDR both sold well as 2D games, and the reason behind that is because they're fucking Street Fighter.
@Covah: Street Fighter IV wasn't even THAT good. It hardly even passed as a sequel. I'd even go so far as to say I'd rather just play HD Remix.
I think that Trine looks pretty sweet.
I'm definitely hoping that they do introduce a Streets of Rage HD game.
Also, I think that the Pixeljunk games: Eden + the upcoming shooter have really awesome 2d art styles.
In addition to what Covah said, there's also that whole superficial belief, that when a game is in 2D it can't contain some completely new features.
Also, the whole independet movement proves the whole dying breed wrong. I don't believe that we ever see the end of 2D graphics, because it is a compelling and charming way to present a game (well, when done well of course!).
I would buy Sonic 4!
@Wry Guy
Valid. I know a bunch of hardcore SF would probably rather play SSIITHDR, but I really did enjoy SFIV.
Nicely done Johhny. Tell your wife I said "Hi".
Braid?
Braid!
Braid!
Also, SSIITHDR>SF4, and Bionic Commando Rearmed for the PSN/XBLA>The New Bionic Commando retail game.
I know Braid was successful but it took Jon Blow 3 years to complete that game. It can be beat within 4-5 hours. I am talking about huge big budget games that are longer huge experiences. These would be games like Castlevania, games like we used to play on the older consoles.
For the record, Braid is one of my favorite games.
Great, another post telling me to get an HDTV. Thanks ya jerk ;)
And a sidescrolling, HD Castlevania game would be the best game ever made.
If I mentioned CAve Story it wouldn't count for having old school graphics.
However I juust remembered Shadow Complex which is made by Epic Games. I gotta say I am really REALLY excited, EXCEPT for the fact they made it for XBLA, which sucks for that only aspect. 2D games do not deserve to be tagged as secondary shit for online distribution
To the contrary, I want to see a really good, full 3D Sonic The Hedgehog.
Not 2D
Not 2.5 D.
Not 3D + 2D, I wanna see what coming up in front of me, I wanna be able to have the true feeling of leaving shit in my dust, I want lots of motion blur, I want speed that seems beyond my control, and I want to be able to look behind me and see the wake of destruction from the laws of physics.
But that's just me...
Every game should look as good as Braid, Okami, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, or Valkyria Chronicles. BioShock and Crysis are nice too.
If you want great 2D graphics, get a DS or PSP.
Fear of 2D games completely dying is a big reason why I love the emergence digital distribution stuff on consoles, and why I'm wary of handhelds getting too advanced. I wish full retail console games would go the 2D route, especially some new platformers. I'll take highly detailed graphics or Mega Man 9 blockiness and everything in between. I love that stuff.
Games that look like that HD Sonic screenshot? Never! After playing Muramasa and KoF XII at E3, I can safely say that neither game could look much better. I like it when my games look like videogames, even if it's only noticeable for a few brief seconds here or there.
More so, it would cost soooooo much money to try and animate a game like that by hand, way more money than it could ever make back.
I'm just glad that games like Muramasa and KoF XII are being made at all. For a while, they really did die out. Only recently have 2D games been able to gain some respect and market share again.
i like the way games like loco-roco, pj eden and crash commando look and play that makes me even forget i'm playing a 2d game. good blog.
I just want 2D games, I don't even care if they're HD. Actually, I'd probably prefer if they weren't for a nostalgia factor.
Also, ANTHONY CHIGURH.
Sonic 4 would be amazing. Streets of Rage, Double Dragon, and what if they even did a new Ninja Gaiden HD. There is definately a market for 2d games. Even if you just make it exclusive to DLC just like Mega Man 9 was at a nice price range. One the game would cost a reasonable price and it wouldn't take up much of your HDD space, which is nice for all those Xbox 360 people who haven't upgraded their HDDs like myself.
Also the reason that I can definately without a doubt in my mind say that there is a market for 2d games still is for all the people from ages 20-40 who were into gaming and watched games evolve from 8 bit games to current day 3d-HD games. Most of the people that played while they was growing up will always have a spot for their favorite 2d games, and yearn for true 2d sequels to their favorite titles. You will always see these people talking on message forums, blogs and other types of review sites about how this game or that game should go back to its 2d roots and become what they once were. Good Games, Sonic , I dare to say Mario, even though Mario has done these the best I still prefer 2D mario games. There is plenty of titles out there and I am pretty sure people will agree with me on that.
I do like the idea of 2.5D, Mega Man 2.5D is looking amazing and could really bring out a whole new "Fun Factor" to once 2D games or new games of big franchises.
Now I think I will go blog about the crappy RPG Stories that should/could have been 100 times better.
Just a random note: your photobucket bandwidth has been exceeded, so your avatar isn't showing up.
Great read! Also, I'm pretty sure, now, that it is more expensive for a company to do a hand-drawn game than a 3D one, hence why there aren't that many games being developed that way.
i will buy a 2-D Sonic 4 however they want to sell it to me download or disc but i will accept hd remakes of 1,2,3,and Sonic&Knuckles. and Knuckles has to be in 2, and 3. that is all

Those games will not be successful in the west, yes, but they are in Japan. And I guess, that's the place to be successful for that genre...
Wario Land on the Wii looks pretty nice.
Alien Hominad, Castle Crashers look great in HD!
If they ever did make sonic 4 I think they would go the Sonic Rush route and make Sonic and the enimies themselves 3D while on a 2D backdrop.
Also, fuck Photobucket.
Heh, my most recent Musing blog touched on some of this stuff, good to see I'm not the only one thinking a bit about it.
Its true. While I too love 2D games, the reality is that they are as niche as 3d platform games these days. There's only so much you can do with them. Once 2D gets to high res 1080p, beyond that there's little point. Besides that, nostalgia doesn't always sell well.
However, there's hope. If you look at what Shadow Complex will be doing, you'll see its a nice mix of 2D and 3D gaming. This is the only positive way we can go with 2D. I applaud Vanillaware's talent, but it heavily grounded in 2D art, that it becomes a painful pleasure. Makes me wonder how good they be if they shifted into 3D, but many japanese developers are reluctant to embrace 3D, to their own detriment.
The 2D problem is also being experienced in japan with anime. Blu Ray is a good medium, but anime, now that's its all done digitally, doesn't benefit much from being in 1080p. Any games 2D that went to 1080p also do not benefit that much, IMO.
Graphics are reaching their peak in 3D, if they haven't already. beyond that it about fine details, AI etc and getting them up to par too. Heavy Rain, Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed 2 must all look great, but play great too.
They've done a tiny bit of this on the PSP. But not nearly as much as I would like either. I also wish that FFVII was a 2d game, then I might still be able to play it without wanting to gouge my eyes out. FFVII would have looked gorgeous in 2d on the PSx. Games like prinny give me a little hope for the future of 2d on new systems.
Also, I would really love to see more games like castle crashers. That game is simply gorgeous.
A very good writeup. I wholey agree with your sadness about Vanillaware's games being on "dying" or technically inferior systems. I think, however, that that is more due to budget constraints than it is a lack of desire to evolve. Vanillaware is a tiny house, and development kits for larger consoles are a tad pricier. I'd imagine this constraint is a big hurdle for alot of the 2D focused developers out there. Just a thought.
Something that is particular offensive to me, and related to what I wrote above, are the developers who do make the jump to HD consoles, but do not update the quality of their resources to match the high-def experience. Case in point, Disgaea 3, and the recent Cross-Edge for PS3. I'm not saying that they shouldn't go 2D. Quite the opposte. KOFXII makes me weep, and serves as proof-positive of what hard work can achieve in the 2D field. Instead I'm paying $40-60 on a product with muddy sprites that would barely hold muster on the PS2 (especially when one considers what Vanillaware has been able to achieve). This, to me, is a real problem.
