Atlus succeeded in making a year in this game feel like a legitimate year. 80 hours later I have finally finished
Persona 3, and I would like to talk for just a moment about a few memories that will stick with me after I put this game on the shelf (after
The Answer of course).
Memory 1: Junpei Iori.
This character was written so well. The first time it was really evident to me was during the time when he becomes slightly jealous of the main character. He begins to have a very outward and somewhat negative opinion of your role as the leader toward you and other members of the dorm. I thought I was able to predict what would happen with this. You see, around this time Strega is becoming part of the plot, and I predicted that Junpei would become the cliche "Judas" of
SEES. That wasn't the case at all. They handled this moment in the game very maturely. All that happens is that Junpei confronts your character to settle the dispute so that there wouldn't be any sour attitudes during the vacation that he wanted to enjoy so much. Junpei says, "Hey... I know I've been kind of a dick lately... but we're still cool, right?".
That was it.
They settled the dispute in a very human way. The way two good friends would. They didn't lazily weave it into an amatuer plot device that would eventually have catostrophic outcomes. Junpei continues to be doubtful about his abilities and his role in life during a good portion of the game though, but that didn't waver his opinion on who he stood by once. He was loyal to the end. What a fantastic character.
Memory 2: Ms. Toriumi
I loved this woman from the moment I laid eyes on her, and was hoping for a Social-Link with her. If I was a character in Persona 3, it would probably be Kenji. Thankfully I was told that the MMO that you can play in the game had a Social-Link. I thought that would be a neat Social-Link to try out. I was pretty happy when I caught on early that it was Ms. Toriumi. The reason this moment sticks with me the most is because of the timing that I finished this S-Link. It was during the Winter Holiday leading up to the final confrontation. The music in the dorm at this time was a lot more somber than usual and I decided to stay in the dorm every one of these days to spend time with "Maya" online. I felt the impending doom and the outside world wasn't such a great place at the moment. I found solace in my room getting closer to Ms. Tori- I mean, Maya. The way the S-Link ended left me empty inside. It reminded me that old friendships were coming to a close and that a final battle awaited. When she wrote: "i luv u" in the sand inside the game as the last message to "Tatsuya" it really affected me knowing that was the end of the S-Link. The fact that the script writers were not afraid to use the word "Love" in this game has also impressed me.
A few days later the winter holiday was over and it was back to school. I believe the first teacher I saw was Ms. Toriumi and it killed me to not be able to say anything. I had no idea that during the epilouge I would be able to wrap up that S-Link. I was ecstatic to say the least. I thought it was handled very well, and Ms. Toriumi was adorable during the segment.
Memory 3: The Main Characters death
This whole sequence was handled amazingly in my opinion. It was depressing as hell, but it was handled beautifully. They did a good job of making you feel tired and sick as if you were on your death bed. The main character was ready to pass on from the moment he sealed Nyx, but he made sure he kept his promise to his friends that they would all meet on the roof of the school. Once he knew that promise had been fulfilled, he smiled, and then the game gave you two decisions for his last action.
They were: "Close your eyes" and "......"
To me, "Close your eyes" was an option for a content and peaceful acceptance of death. The other option, "......" was a final contemplation on everything leading up to that point. Either way it was basically the same ending. They put his death in your hands in a very
Metal Gear Solid 3 kind of way.
It's rare anymore that a game makes me feel for the characters the way this game did. The last game that did it was Metal Gear Solid 4 I believe. This game was still different. It completely put me in the shoes of the Main Character and made me fall in
love and find friendship in the company of too many people to name. In 80 hours, Atlus allowed me to live for a whole year in someone elses shoes. That. Is probably what sticks with me the most.
You're such a little whiny sentimental bitch.
Well, I'm not going to read this. I am going to finish up what I'm doing and go put Persona 3: FES in so that I can read it without ruining anything about the game I haven't discovered on my own yet.
Amen, brotha.
Although number three did catch my eye as I was scrolling through. Luckily, I already knew that. Reading about The Answer in the instruction manual practically spoils it for you.
Yeah, well it's not really about the fact that it happens but the way it was executed. I didn't know they talked about The Answer in the manual. I was trying to find stuff on it the other day in there and couldn't find it.
It could just be my fuzzy memory and having accidentally read something on this site. :S
should've stuck spoilers in the title as most of this shit is spoilers.
and someone like me, who's also laggin in P3, didn't want to see "the main character dies".
[ijust sayin[/i]
Between the title and the first small paragraph it should be more than evident this blog will contain spoilers. Sorry, man.
This is such an awesome game. I finished it a few weeks ago. I thought that the Maya S link was really well done as well. The epilogue ending of that link was brilliant and hilarious.
I can't wait for Persona 3 Portable tomorrow.
Saddest part of Minato's death for me was that I didn't realized what happened at first. I got to the credits and thought he fell asleep in Aegis lap and it was just a "d'awww happy ending," only to go online and get schooled about what had happened T___T
<3 the Ms. Toriumi social link. What great memories from a great game.
Just one out of a bunch of articles on P4 and P3 that I won't read but really want to because I have yet to beat FES.
Yeah, Persona 3 is a COMMITMENT. If you want the full experience you need to play The Journey as well as The Answer on the FES version of the game. My grand total play time was 120 hours. I'd never put that much time into a single playthrough of a game unless you want to count all the time I've longed into Capcom vs SNK 2, Mark of the Wolves, and King of Fighters 98.
Nice writeup, I totally agree with everything you've written. What you wrote about Junpei is one of the reasons why this game is great, the characters all feel like real people, they're supposed to be your friends from high school, it's just a shame you couldn't have any bro-links with the male SEES members...
SPOILERS MAN, GOSH
hmmm... I may have to re-think my aversion to Japanese/anime based games! I think part of it is the whole "high school" thing... I find it tends to be a little "angst" driven and I've outgrown that and really have trouble adjusting to the very young characters usually used in many Japanese based games.
If there's a PSP version coming out... eh, I may eventually pick it up and give this game a try.
Elsa, I had the same issue going into this game. After giving the game a try though after so many glowing reviews I was happy to see those conceptions dashed. The main characters are well written and the side stories with other characters are really charming. The game has some glaring flaws though. These are supposedly addressed in Persona 4 though. The main characters in Persona 3 are actually a little more mature than their peers at the school. Later in the game there is even a small bit of social commentary on how the mass media acts about certain things. Your characters seem above that.

I agree with every word of this article. It also made me listen to "Kimi no Kioku" again.
80 hours.
136 here.
Also, Grim Reaper called. He called you a bitch.
The ending was perfect though, just as "Memories of You" kicks in and the credits start rolling.
But Shoji Meguro had made the most fantastic soundtrack for the game, as all of the tracks were just simply an aural orgy of delight.
*looks at the main character death spoiler*
I should go ahead and finish the game. Really great writeup though, the plot is handled VERY maturely, like you said. It really shows just how childish some other RPG stories really are.
No need to thank me for pushing you to play the game. :)
Actually, it was a combination of everyones opinions on the game, Jimbo. Colette was the final voice of reason if you want to get technical. I will credit Indigo Prophecy to you, though.
I scrolled through this not realizing there would be major spoilers in colored font.
wonderful write up! I really love how you described Junpei's attitude towards the main character on how he really felt. No one was really objective as he was.
I always tell people why I love P3's ending more than P4, it gave me a greater emotion than P4's ending.
Sh*t, I tried only scanning the blog because I'm in the middle of Persona 3 myself and I saw a damn huge spoiler. I should have known better. This same thing happened to me and Chrono Trigger.
I just finished up P3 about a month ago. I too loved the MMO social link. I finished it early in the game though as I liked it so much. :)
And the ending was excellent. Not only was the ending great, but the the lead up to the final confrontation was perfect. The entire month of January has such an a great atmosphere. I really began to feel a sense of "the end" (both of the game and the game world) as I was progressing through the final floors of Tarturus. By far one of the best endings in any game I've ever played.
Tsk tsk tsk at you blog scanners. What is this? Christmas? This is the equivalent of you peeking in a gift when it isn't time for you to play with it. Like I said. Between the title and the first paragraph you should know to back out before things become spoiled.
great read... I still need to get back to the Answer...so many good memories in that game.
