I think you are associating the people on this site with the majority. That isn’t the case here. This site is full of hardcore gamers who love the whole spectrum of video game culture. You yourself professed your love for the console in your own blog. I don’t doubt that a good bit of the people claiming that they love the system, do in fact, love the system. This is a community of hardcore gamers who would logically love any great system, new or old. Who allowed the DC to fail? Not destructoid. No, that is too far of a minority to count as the group who hammered the nail in the the Dreamcast’s coffin. It was the average joe. The guy who cared about the DVD component, not the colorful games. It wasn’t the 5,6,7 or 8 year old who had no power to acquire the Dreamcast or the judgement to not buy into the marketing crap. It was the vendors, the adults who wanted a DVD player, and Sony’s fault for simply crushing Sega’s system in terms of marketing.
I will agree that there are a few out there who are simply jumping on the bandwagon, but I truly feel that it is only just a few. At least here in this community. I bought a Dreamcast when it came out back in the day and I too fell in love with system and it pained my to see it die on the store shelves. I can’t bring myself to call out Dtoid for allowing it to happen though. You want a culprit? Ask the buyers of the Wii if they loved the Dreamcast. I can pretty much tell you that the majority (you know, the people not on Destructoid) will tell you that they could have cared less about the Dreamcast and that they turned it in for a PS2 or simply chose the PS2 over it.
So please, Dtoider, continue with the love-fest that DC is getting. What other system came and conquered only to die shortly after in such a way as the Dreamcast did? 3DO? No. Turbo Graphix 16? No. Saturn? No. The Dreamcast was short lived, but it ushered in a new generation of technology, offered an incredible library of games, and did it at an affordable price. The Dreamcast deserves every bit of praise it is getting. Especially from a community like Destructoid.
You know, the vocal minority. Not the majority.
Turbo Grafx 16? Turbo Grafx 16. Never had a Dreamcast though, these inventions, how we love them. Keith Courage, Alien Crush, rule.
You put my thoughts into words my friend, I wanted to write something like this, but couldn't really put my thoughts into words. Good job. fapfapfap
I never owned the system myself, and while the interest was low, I do recognize how powerful the little thing was. Shame how it got squashed so soon, but didn't it start the last generation earlier than anyone else? I may be wrong there.
I have no regrets about what consoles I buy, regardless of their level of success. Should I have wound up with a Dreamcast, I'd have loved it as much as any other console, but as I didn't...and I wouldn't have been able to utilize the net service anyway. =P
Another thing that (to me anyway) killed the Dreamcast? The Saturn. It failed to deliver, and many of Sega's hardest fans jumped ship to the PlayStation, and they stuck with the brand. Seeing news of a new Sega console, they remembered what happened with the Saturn and steered clear. Did that happen with everyone? Of course not. But with the sheer amount of people following this philosophy, of course the system's going to be a weight in the water.
Strange how so few people aren't comparing the Wii to the Dreamcast. The GC was pretty far behind in the last gen, and more than enough people are quite displeased with the Wii. It's not the same story with the Saturn having a role in killing its baby brother, but how many people do you know will with-confidence buy the next Nintendo console after the Wii? I can't speak for anyone I know. I'm one of three people I know with the system, and I'm the only person who actually uses his.
So yeah. Shame the DC died and all, but there's fuck-all we can do about it now. I find it amusing how there's a game coming out for it now, at least.
I love my Atari Lynx. And I'm not lying.
Nicely stated!
I fucking love your header so much.
Pretty much agreed good sir, although I'm just thinking he's just "angry" about how a lot of people say they "loved" the Dreamcast and all, but are getting them second hand and more recently, which in turn didn't help it back in the day.
Also, keep an eye out for an absolutely ballin' picture of me, you, and someone who I can't put their name to their face coming somewhat soon! =D
I can't stop staring at your Chris Dane Owens avatar, it's mesmerizing.
@ ArrestedDeveloper: I know right? CDO is the man!
The Dreamcast was probably my most played system besides the PS2. I sat down with Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 upon release for about 24 hours straight, and I think I played Jet Grind Radio around 100 hours.
Add in the countless hundreds of hours spent playing all the quality shmups and fighting games it had, and check out my past blog on how much I loved Phantasy Star Online DC: then yes, I can certainly say I love my Dreamcast. I still bust it out constantly. This week: Typing of the Dead!
Like I said in Jimbos blog though, I WILL agree that a lot of younger gamers are hopping on the "<3 Dreamcast" bandwagon, because it's so easy to do.
@Takeshi: You totally stole my line man! You know I have a deep and powerful love for the Atari Lynx, and nothing will ever come between us.
@SilverDragon
I love you.
This man speaks the truth!
Solgrim, I just watched that video of Shine On Me.
I'm half scared and half intrigued. I don't know what's real anymore.
