News in Film : First Look at a New Star Wars Movie & Television Series
Snaileb | 9:01 AM on 02.13.2008 39 comments

Hey Destructoid! Center my pictures! No I don't want to upload them to your server!

Well besides from all the superhero hype and video game related garbage that makes it to the big screen, here's another childhood killer on the horizon. It's Star Wars baby! That's right, not only are we lucky enough for them to re-release the Star Wars trilogy in 3-D by 2010, but we're also being treated to a re-release of the animated film, Star Wars : Clone Wars, which takes place between Episodes 2 & 3. The film will run approximatly 102 minutes, and is a collaberation of 25 short 15 minute episodes. Unfortunately, they have my money already.

That's not all Destructicans. The famed television series that made its major debut at Comic Con is coming to a TV near you! Supposively due out in 08, the TV show will feature live action performances that will take place between Episodes 3 & 4, much like the upcoming video game Star Wars : The Force Unleashed.

Another movie is on the way as well. It's a fully CGI animated film, and will take place between Episodes 2 & 3. Confused yet? It gets crazier, as it tells the story of Anakin's apprentice Ahsoka, will center around the Clone Wars as well. Take a look, won't you?

If you want my opinion, it looks HORRIBLE, and I hate that Anakin must be portrayed as that loser who got the role for episodes 2 & 3. What about you, Destructoid?

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

Anakin had an apprentice? I refuse to believe it! Why can't they turn the Rogue Squadron books into a movie? That would be great. Episodes 1-3 were immensely lacking in Space battles and that would easily make up for it.

I so do not care about all this side story crap. I might give the live action series a look, but the whole Star Wars fantasy ended for me the day I finished watching Episode 3 for the first time. The story is over as far as I'm concerned. If they want to make an Episode 7-9, go nuts. I'll be involved again at that point. But trying to fill in every damn crack of the preexisting story is just overkill that I have zero interest in. I read the Zahn books and while they were good on their own terms, it was something new to existing characters who's stories had ended. All this is is shoehorning extra crap in on what I already know. No thanks.

The only bit of story I really care about is Star Wars : The Force Unleashed, since it takes place between Ep. 3 & 4, and it is an official part of the story.. word has it the plot is that Darth Vader is trying to overthrow the emporer while training his apprentice to do so.

So when he asked Luke to join him and take down the Emporer, it wasn't the first time he's tried. Fucking exciting.

Well, I did like the original Clone Wars so I'll check this one out for sure. I really can't wait for the TV series though; what other scifi cgi goodness do we have on tv anyway? BSG is ending this year, SGA is crap... Just bring it!

Anything pre- A New Hope is garbage. Everything after it including the expanded universe is completely awesome.

I absolutely hated the guy who played Anakin, but I've realized it's not all his fault he sucked. The script was kind of....

Bad.

@EDS

And I thought I was the only one. He didn't do the greatest acting job in the world but it didn't seem like they gave him a whole lot to work with. Anakin had some god awful dialogue in the movie that even Sean Connery couldn't make sound bad ass.

George has a way of pissing off all of us Star Wars fans who grew up with the original trilogy.

The addiction is too great. I shall watch this and repurchase everything several times over at Lucas's whim.

I'm going to check out the new animated movie (though I thought is was a tv show too and they were only releasing the first three episodes as a movie). It probably won't be half as good as the original Clone Wars series but I'm a sucker for Jedi action.

I'm looking forward to the new live action show more though.

As a artist with a fair amount of 3D experiance I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it doesn't look "horrible", on a technical level it's actually quite good I'd say.
I know that makes me a commie or whatever but really it doesn't look bad people. Now will it be a great cartoon? I dunno. But was any Star Wars really "Great" save Empire?

Thanks for the update Snaileb. I think the CGI bit is terrible looking, and I've already seen the clone wars, so why wouldn't I go ahead and see it again?

Lucas lost all of the heart of the original trilogy when he based the prequels entirely around CGI visuals. His vanity to direct them led decent actors to give wooden performances, and his decision to make the force come from germs shows how thin the line between genius and stupidity really is.

I'll check out the live action TV show, the clone wars, and the force unleashed, but outside of that, fuck anything before Ep. 4.

Foe I think Reboot looks better than this. Ratatoullie looks better, and it was about a rat. Dammit.

GuitarAtomik : The Clone Wars cartoon series that originally aired on Cartoon Network is the same cartoon movie that is being released in theaters, thus the 25 episodes being 15 minutes long. I think. Or something.. I don't know how they're fitting that in there.

The whole problem I have with Star Wars is that Ep. 4-6 was worth telling. Everything else, not so much, once 4-6 had been told. Sure, Shakespeare could tell a good story where you knew the ending going in, but Lucas is no Shakespeare.

If Luke / Leia raised a child who re-established the Sith, that would be an interesting 7-9. But whenever Star Wars veers away from the relationships between a few compelling characters, it starts getting hard to care.

Yeah. I was under the impression that the new CG thing was a TV show and that they were going to release the first 3 episodes (so like an hour and a half) as a movie.

Who knows though. The info surrounding all these projects is confusing.

DEAR GOD MAKE IT STOP.

the only good non-episode stuff was Shadow of the Empire, The Thrawn Saga, Bounty Hunter Wars, and The Clone Wars TV Show. oh and some of the old Republic stuff, msotly about the Sith Wars and Exar Kun.

I wish they'd make an animated series set in the Tales of the Old Republic era which was like 1000 years before the movies. You'd have plenty of Jedi and Sith around to play with, the setting wouldn't feel so much like a rehash of the movies, and they wouldn't be constrained so much by continuity. Eitehr that, or do some after the original trilogy stuff. The Star Wars universe and mythology is so large that not every series needs Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker in it.

Lucas already raped my childhood with the bastardized DVD releases of 4, 5, 6.

Now he's come back to destroy the only good part of the new trilogy (the cartoons).

But who knows, it may blow me away.

Thanks for the news, Snaileb...this is the first I’ve heard of this. But I’m gonna have to agree 100% with dvddesign and MaxVest: I’m done watching and buying Star Wars-related stuff until they (A) make episodes 7-9, or (B) release the first six movies on Blu-ray.

Snaileb: I don't want to be mean, but if you think Reboot looks better you are high. Thats like the difference between Maya and Bryce. But I totally agree with you about Ratatouille, because that is Pixar and they have the best art direction in 3D. So that's kind of a gimmie.

Cone Wars was way better as 2D, but the 3D one still looks okay. Nice lighting and the materials look soft and clay like. Good times.

l-o-fucking-l, reboot...

Anyhoo, I just want to play force unleashed. I'm not going to bother learning anything else about this universe. Theres too much to cram in. Also, lets make another Reboot game with game cubes and web surfing and viruses and uhh... Fong!

I agree that this is starting to get ridiculous. Personally, I keep what I consider to be canon in the SW universe relatively simple: Episodes 1-6, Shadows of the Empire, The Thrawn Triology, The Clone Wars graphic novels that Dark Horse comics published, and i suppose the live action show and the Force Unleased storyline. You can cut all the other stuff out and get more than enough backstory to keep you satisfied for many lifetimes.
