I'm pretty pissed when I read this article, but truthfully I always knew the failure rate was higher than expected. From the article :
"Microsoft has admitted that every one of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in the past 19 months suffers from a design flaw that could cause the device to fail.
The firm will extend the warranty coverage from one to three years to compensate consumers, but does not plan to instate a recall or exchange programme.
Microsoft gaming chief Robbie Bach claimed in a conference call with financial analysts that the design issues surfaced recently."
Now let that sink in.
ONE DAY.. your console will red ring, or fail.
Me = Bateman
M'soft = Alan
So what does this mean for us? How can you put a 3 year warranty on something that is ment to fail? We are not only getting scammed by Nintendo's casual market, the Playstation's crazy history, but now everyone's beloved xbox is getting burned. Comment, discuss, and flame below please. It's Friday and I need to make this as entertaining as possible. Cats approved.
Darth Vader is pooring water from the ocean into a jug....do you really need to poor water from a container into a nother container when you are standing in water?
and pshhh Darth is clearly filtering the water (hence the brita ) pouring it into another jug (which looks like an empty large vinegar bottle, if you've ever seen them in stores) so that he can clearly have himself some water on his nice vacation at the beach, obviously. What, you thought Vader's suit/mask could filter water for him when he drinks it? Come on, this is the future he's in, not the future's future.
Supposedly all new in retail 360s (I would assume the Elite as well?) have this issue fixed. And the peeps at TeamXbox have seen some internal modifications to the hardware recently when it comes back from coffin-land.
I did want to note to all those concerned... When you get your Xbox back from repair, like I did for both my consoles, you do get BRAND NEW internals in the system. It's been gutted completely and had a new MOBO and such put in there. The only thing that'll be old is the shell for the system.
Seriously, if you can think of a better way to get water, I'd like to hear it.
Regarding Microsoft's announcement, I'm kinda glad I haven't bought a 360 yet considering the failure. Don't get me wrong here, I want one but I really don't want to go through the aggravation that so many of you have, dicking around with warranties and sending it out to get fixed. Bleh.
If that is the ocean, and I think it is, then he's making filtered salt water. Not really going to help him much unless he's cooking pasta. Vader you idiot!
I am actually waiting for teh Halo one. What can I say, I like teh Haloz.
In all seriousness, I think that a company that big to actually own up to their faults (cough cough Sony cough cough) is still higher standing in my book. My XBox has only scratched one game, and it was in the upright position at the time (a known issue). I've never had it overheat or anything. Course, it is sitting on a couple big ass sever heat-sinks. You know, just in case.
boltox, I'm in the same boat, waiting on the "confirmed to not fail" systems to come. Plus, I don't have the cash right now to get a system in the first place, so all the better to have more reasons to put off the purchase. I may dislike most of what Microsoft does, but their 360 is one of the few things they're really doing correctly, while simultaneously not at a detriment to customers and the competitors.
A somewhat related subject is the idea of competing versions of Windows (no, not like 2000 vs. XP, two current versions by different groups), which may sound strange, but it really should happen, but it won't; read up on the old 1980s AT&T antitrust + split to see how a Microsoft split would change how Windows is dealt with, and possibly many of their other products. A strange possibility in the desktop computer market, indeed...
wait, does that mean that no one is upset about microsoft selling 11.6 million defective units to the gaming community? maybe the amazing headline picture was too distracting...
It won't do much to get upset about it. I don't plan to boycott MS anytime soon. Perhaps from my experience working in IT and in life in general, I realize that most products (hardware or software) are open to defects in some shape or form. Most software can be released hastily because patching via the Internet is so easy. For hardware on the other hand, it's not so forgivable. But at the same time, it's not that hard to swallow either.
I've never owned a vehicle without a safety recall of some sort or something breaking. I've rarely owned a video card or other piece of PC hardware that didn't crap out at some point. I, along with millions of others around the world played the original Nintendo and was forced to play the 'blow me' game just to get my games to work.

Dammit!
If they know about this problem "now" (recently surfaced, yeah right),
Will the 'Spartan Green' Halo 3 Xbox360 have the same issue, or will this have it fixed and not have to worry about it?

Maybe I'm too cynical, but this is nothing new.
