Back to Basics : Dreamcast

Since XBL was down and I couldn't download the new COD4 map packs, I pissed myself in anger. After wallowing in my own filth, I cleaned up and decided it was time to realize that the 360 could not supply my every gaming need. Such is the timing of the universe, I got a package in the mail from resident dtoider Mr.Wilson the same day I was taking a 360 break and playing my Playstation 2. It just so happen to be a Dreamcast! (OMG)

With two controllers, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and some Powerstone I was set. Up until 4am with caffeine pumping threw my veins and crust in my eye, it reminded me of better times. I looked up codes for every game I had, since the 360 won't let you earn achievements using codes I tend to stay away. It was worth it though, from playing through Sonic Adventure to just goofing off in Crazy Taxi.

It did take me a while to find a memory card though. I just found out our town has a Play N Trade, and I even got a job there! I'm actually doing engineering, but this is going to be my 2nd job. I'm even thinking about quitting my real job, before I become one of these older people that decay at the computer in his 8-5 desk job.

Does anyone remember their fondest nostalgic memory? What's a good Dreamcast game to buy? Learn me some games Destructoid!

Also, are component cables an actual reality for the Dreamcast?

I'm jealous and I really like Grandia 2 if you don't already have it. I couldn't beat it because my copy stopped working at the last fucking boss of the game.

As far as the component cables go, I'll check my local/awesome vintage videogame store and see if she has any or is willing to find me some.

And I feel you on the quitting your "real job" goes. I'm 25 and I'm already tired of corporate life. I'm starting to venture out on a few side projects.

Toy Commander and Grandia 2, I'll make a note of it. I've heard of them, and good things too.

I have VGA cables! I mean, is it possible to get your DC to display in 480i or progressive scan?

Jet Set/Grind Radio, Bomberman Online... Oh my, I can' remember half of it...
Soul Calibur is amazing, but rare.

I can be wrong, but I once read that the tv cables for the gamecube were compatible with the dreamcast.

So... if the wii uses the same type of connection, you might be able to use the wii component cables on the dreamcast.

Or not.

@D

Seconded for Toy Commander.

Also Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Chu Chu Rocket, Sega Swirl, and Sega Bass Fishing.

Man I loved the DC. Best console Sega ever made. YOU HEARD ME.

Holy shit Kamakazie, thanks man. I'll try that.

I have Jet Set and Soul Calibur. Vigilante 8 was good, I had it on the N64, but it's coming to XBL with online. So..

I thought I was the only one who still had their Dreamcast.

Here are some games that are must haves. From the ones not mentioned.
Skies of Arcadia, Powerstone 2, NBA 2k1, NFL 2k1, Shenmue, House of the Dead 2, Virtua Fighter 3tb, Project Justice, Capcom vs SNK 2, Dead or Alive 2, Outrigger.

Ooga Booga is awesome with booze and three friends, but blows single player. I'd say Sega Marine Fishing assuming you can find the controller, Shenmue, Armada, Crazy Taxi 1/2, and probably half a dozen other ones will come to me after I post this comment.

You can also find Half-Life and Propeller Arena on the interwebs. Check the last one out, it's really awesome, don't even know why it wasn't released.

Oh yeah! I actually own Powerstone 2, Capcom vs SNK 2, Dead or Alive 2, Crazy Taxi (1 & 2) and Space Channel 5.

I really want Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, House of the Dead 2, Armada, and Outrigger.

Blue Stinger.. NO! And fishing games, keep me away from all fishing games.

Yeah I'll be checking out alot of these, and I'm anxious to try my GC cables on the DC.

LOL Holy shit, I went and bought Beserk, Rage of Guts from the Play and Trade this weekend! I saw it, and it looked like the anime : Beserk.

It has nothing to do with the series, but it's a fun hack n slash.

I own Dynamite Cop. It's soooo corny, I love it though. I actually loved Powerstone, and hated Powerstone 2. Powerstone 2 was missing some characters, and the levels were inferior to the first, IMO.

Maybe it's just because it was the first DC game I played, and I fear change.

So many good games, Dynamite Cop is great because it's so cheesy. Project Justice is my favourite 3D fight on the DC closely followed by Soul Calibur. MVC2 is obviously the best 2D one.

NO PHISING! I'm not much for fish.

Mr.Wilson actually hooked me up with almost every CAPCOM game ever made. The fighting ones I have, like... all of them.

Project Justice I have never heard of. I'll look it up, hopefully it's not another fighting game.

Lots of fighting games and shooters for the DC. Any RPG's?

SF Rush 2049!! Basically the only game my friends and I played during our 4 years of high school. Fur Fighters is also a hilarious must!! I was also a huge fan of Tokyo Xtreme Racer (particularly 2) and is much better than the PS2 version IMO.

The Dreamcast is full of fucking awesome titles. It looks as though everybody else beat me to the punch on recommendations, but I think I can think of a few that haven't been named yet.

Typing of the Dead is great fun if you can find a keyboard. I was lucky enough to have already bought one for the Web Browser (which I actually believed I would use regularly when I first got my Dreamcast). I was also lucky enough to find a brand new, sealed copy of the game on Amazon for less than 10 cents (it was more like $5 after shipping, but still!). The keyboard is also fun to use with Soul Calibur. :D

I also second Jet Grind Radio and Samba de Amigo, as they are both fucking awesome. Samba is even kind of fun with a controller if you can't find maracas (I played without for years before picking up maracas at a con......of course, they didn't even work, so I still haven't played with them).

Ikaruga and Rez are big ones, but those can be bought on the 360 now.

Dreamcast games are very easy to burn and play on regular CDs, so you might want to check the internet for some good ones.

I <3 the Dreamcast. :D

I have a dreamcast that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all consoles are created equal."

I have a dreamcast that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former xbox gamers and the sons of former ps2 gamers will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dreamcast that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dreamcast that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the consoles they own but by the content of their games.

I have a dreamcast today.

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious fanboyism, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little ds's and psps will be able to join hands with little xbox360s and ps3's as sisters and brothers.

I have a dreamcast today.
