Router - Xbox 360 question!
Smithers | 10:34 AM on 08.30.2007 17 comments

OK so I bought my 360, a wireless USB connector for the 360 and a wireless router all this week. I have received the router and have it all set up. I want to connect to Xbox Live as soon as possible so I need some of the info now so I can write it down and connect!

-How do I find my WEP key? (I have network magic for my router if that helps.)
-Do I need an SSID?
-WTF is an SSID and how the hell do I find it?
-What else do I need besides the WEP key to connect?

Yea I am a NEWB.

Please help out guys I just can't wait :D

first off, congrats on your purchase(s).

Secondly, WOAH, you are a newb.

Network magic means nothing to me.

To set up and find your WEP key you need to login to your router from your PC.

Who made your router?

Linksys is usually: 192.168.1.1

Okay, did you line up your DHCP to give an IP?

Make sure it's dynamic and not static or else you could run into conflicts later down the line.

:P

The WEP is security for your router and it has a password from your router. it's usually a 10 digit hex code. If you don't have one setup for your wireless at home, you do not have one, usually.

Yes you need the SSID. The SSID is the router's name. If you didn't give it a custom name (and you should), it'll usually be a generic game which varies on the manufacturer.

I would recommend you google the model number for your router to find out how to get the SSID, WEP key and other settings, like MTU, and open ports.

In addition to the WEP key, you need two blue potions, a mage, and a level 12 ASCII master spell. I recommend you roll an 18 otherwise you could overload your circuit breakers and cause a core meltdown.

Good luck!

You'll need an SSID. Your SSID is what you called your router during the setup of the router. You can find that information when you log in to the router as well.

You're SSID helps your wireless equipment identify your router uniquely and simplifies it to a name so you know which router to connect to, in case there is more than one nearby.

It stands for:
Service Set Identifier [Wikipedia].

If your router is open you don't need a WEP key. But, it is highly recommended you don't leave a router open. Then again, WEP can be hacked in minutes so...

Does the 360 allow for WPA?

It says to go here http://192.168.0.1 and press enter. I did that and it says their server is down. It says to do this to log into the router :S

If I haven't activated my WEP yet do I need to or can I conect with Xb360 without it,? If so what do I need?

The server is down? That's weird.

Who makes your router?

Linksys, Netgear, Cisco, Buffalo, someone else I can't think of?

Try unplugging it and plugging it back in. Then try logging in again.

I'm not one for wireless. I much prefer to just stick it in the hole and let it sit there all the time. You know you've got a connection going on if it's in the hole.

You mean using ethernet I hope GayBear. That is of course the best connection. Reduces lag considerably for online play. But, wireless is really useful when your house isn't wired up at construction for it and you don't keep your modem in the same room as the machine.

Hey guys one last question.

If I chose not to use WEP can I just directly connect with my 360?

What do you mean by directly connect?

Not wireless? Or, no encryption?

If you select no encryption whatsoever you leave your router open to your neighbors, people driving by, whatever...

But, if you do that, yes, you should be able to just connect to it without having to type in any sort of codes. Just supply the 360 with the SSID and tell it to connect. It should just start working.

Hey Smithers. Here are the steps you need to follow from beginning to end to make this work, if you want more information on any of this please ask.

---------------

The 360 Wireless adaptor supports WPA and WEP encryption, but not WPA2. To make your connection secure, I would suggest using either of these, otherwise anyone driving past your house and living nearby can connect to your router.

You will need to connect a PC to your wireless router (either wirelessly or with a cable) in order to configure it. You configure a router by logging onto it from internet explorer.

You log onto your router by typing your default gateway into an address bar. You can find this by looking at the details of the wireless connection within 'network connections'. It will be a string of numbers, something like '192.168.10.1' for example.

Your routers configuration page looks like a normal website, with lots of frightening looking options you can ignore for the time being.

Find the 'security' options, and switch on WEP or WPA. It will give you a code (make sure you write this down correctly).

Save the changes on your router and go back to your 360.

Run through the setup for wireless on your 360, and when it asks for the WEP/WPA code, enter the code you've just written down.

Hopefully a few seconds later, everything splutters into life and works forevermore.

Hopefully this is some help, just ask if you're stuck.
