I'm Joseph, an impoverished 20 year old student with little else to do but sit around all day playing video games and watching TV. Even so, I'm also an aspiring screenwriter (hence my impeccable grammar and delightful vocabulary) -- I say aspiring, though, because all I really do is sit around all day playing video games and watching TV.
I really wanted to personalise my room at University a bit more, but as we're not allowed to damage the walls themselves with hooks and whatnot, I had to get creative. And being the geek that I am, I decided that a tribute to the 8-bit era was the way to go.
Using approximately 371 squares of 5x5 card (156 black, 111 dark blue, 74 light blue, 14 white and 16 cream), I recreated Mega Man. I originally planned to do Space Invaders, but I figured our Mega friend would make for a better challenge. As for the card itself, cutting it all to shape/size took roughly around 6 hours or so, but I actually kind of enjoyed it. It was oddly rewarding.
Once that was out of the way and all the 'pixels' were ready, I started the actual assembling.
One hour and 25 minutes later, he was finished.
The final thing measures in at just over a metre and a bit in height, and I'm pretty damn thrilled with the end result. I recorded a time-laspe video of the entire building process to boot, which shows him take shape a lot better (and more awesomely):
So, yeah. That's my new Mega Wall. :3
Oh, and dropping cards out of your hands in a specific order? Deceptively difficult.
Brilliant! This is the kind of stuff I'm looking forward to doing when I someday move out of my parent's house. That and playing videogames all day without having to hear constant complaining about it.
I measured a grid of 5cm x 5cm on a normal piece of A4 paper and discovered that it would give me 35 squares. I then simply counted all of the pixels (grouping the colours together) on the Mega Man sprite I wanted to use and worked out how many I'd need in total. Then it was just a matter of popping out and buying enough card.
Although I'd recommend buying more card than you actually need. I had to redo a few of the squares after mis-cutting, so it was good to have back up.
Blimey, I'm amazed at how well this is going down. Thanks, everyone! I really enjoyed making it.
@Dao2-SKP: I try to! I've somehow wound up dropping a trouser size since I started Uni, so unfortunately none of my jeans really fit anymore! Definitely will need to invest in some new belts, methinks.
Sweet Idea! But keep your eyes open, i'm working on a giant Tetris and a top secret destructoid hybrid right now. I'm using paint though so it takes a lot longer... ;)
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
-Thanks
