I've been considering L&D, mostly because it appears to have all the metal music that was missing from GTAIV. Riding around on motorcycles why tearing apart cars with a sawed off shotgun, listening to death metal sounds too perfect for me.
If you like penis, go get it.
@The Reborn:
That's one of the main things making me hesitate. I really hated the lack of variety in GTAIV, and it grew so tiresome by the end. On the other hand, though, I did love driving the bikes. :x
@ Reborn
Wrong. The missions are a ton of fun, which is what some of Niko's story were missing. Look them up on youtube to see if you'd like them. I don't understand why GTA gets so much hate.
@ Pyroph- Maybe because it's the most overrated videogame series in history?
Or let me put it this way, take any 3D GTA game and replace all the characters with Care Bears. Do you think anyone would still play it?
You could swap all the characters from Shadow of the Colossus, or Street Fighter, or even Halo with Care Bears of different sizes and shapes, and people would still play them. Not as many people to be sure, but a lot of people would stick with those games, because they all feature some damn good gameplay.
That's not something you can say about the 3D GTA games. All they have going for them is "cool factor", and being cool rarely lasts. That's the reason that GTAIV sold less than Rockstar expected, and why so many people aren't sure if they even like the series anymore.
Being "cool" isn't enough to hold people's interested for more than a few years.
If you like GTA4 and want more of it, buy it. It's worth it.
You didn't like GTA4? Though I like TLAD more due to it's style, you won't if you hate GTA4. Skip it, then.
RE5 isnt out next week its march 13th and i would get LATD if you liked the story in GTA4 and want to know more about the stories in the background.
Mr Holmes just explained why I can never stand the GTA games. I was in a Hollywood Video store a few months ago looking at games when I found a copy of GTA4 in a box. Seems that the employees forgot to take it out. Did I steal it? If it wasn't GTA I probably would have. I returned it to the guy at the counter.
@ Jonathan
News to me, aside from the driving, GTA4 had damn fine gameplay. I never said or implied that it was the best series created, just that people seem to rip into it only because of it being so huge.
Yeah, I found it to be pretty bland at times and the dating thing was a joke, but I found the cutscenes and missions to be entertaining; something most VG's are lacking with.
Anyway, my main point of that comment for Reborn is: What do you want the missions to do then? TLAD had some similar appearing missions, definitely, but innovation does not equal fun. What
Take out the what at the end of that. >_>
@ Jonathan
You had an argument going on there, until you mentioned "Halo" and "good gameplay". Halo is as average as it can get for shooters.
GTA4 has some "damn good gameplay", a good story (if you're into these kind of stories), high production value and more lasting appeal than the average game today.
Dtoid will have its review up on Monday, if you're still undecided by that time.
The new characters and voice acting are pretty great (I much prefer John and Billy to Niko and Roman) BUT I have been having issues with constant freezing after every single mission. So that sucks.
I'm with Holmes on this one, sort of. I do think the games have always had decent gameplay, and of course the sandbox element has always helped. And the story is usually good.
That said, I've grown bored with these games. I was so excited for GTA4, and all it did was disappoint me. I never even beat it, it got so boring. Every mission seemed to be the same as the last when it came down to it.
I'm most likely done with GTA.
I mean, isn't it a simple choice?
If you like GTA then get it...
I don't play GTA games. So I'm not going to get it.
Get it? Got it? Good.
Simple, eh?!
Problem solved...
I say get the Mirrors Edge dlc.
Replacing the colossi with Care Bears would be the greatest idea ever. Why hasn't someone done this?
I say go for it because the general consensus is that it is worth the money. I am not getting it just yet because I still have to finish the main game first.
If you're a GTA fan it's like a powerful drug. You take the hit, and you're amazed at first by all the new stuff, the cool bikes, the tweaked controls. And then you crash, realizing that everything is still the same and you still crave more. That's how I felt about it anyway, and I'm a huge GTA fanboy.
Pyroph and Ironic1- So, you guys would really play GTA if featured nothing but Care Bears "borrowing" cars from each other, and Care-Bear-Staring each other until they swoon?
No, but I wouldn't play SOTC, Street Fighter or Halo with Care Bears either.
But I understand the point your trying to get across, so yes, I would play GTA if it wasn't that violent, just for the gameplay.
Oh, and yeah, on a side note, beeing located in Germany for me means that GTA4 is actually the first game in the series that features blood, death animations and so on.
And I really loved every other 3D GTA.
I loved GTAIV, so I love this.
Its hard for me to argue against Holmes, because its hard for me to say why I love the game.
One thing I will say though is that the improved motorcycle handling makes the driving/shooting thing MUCH less of a bitch. I actually enjoyed those segments this time.
So yes, if you liked GTAIV or Republican Space Rangers, you get more of that and a dick.
Well, I got it, but it was free. I took advantage of the 3 months of live plus TLAD for 19.99. So I consider it as paying for the 3 months of live. I haven't played it yet, but if you can find a deal like that still it might be worth it.
I agree that the mission structure in GTA series blows ass. One of the many things I love about Saints Row 2 is the variety in the missions. Not just drive here/shoot or even worse the drive here while shooting at something invincible like GTA. Here's to hoping Saints Row 2 gets some new content.
@ The Reborn
Every game is repetitive. To say that GTA's is when there are games like SF4, receiving lots of praise, and more recently - Halo Wars which consists of building a base every level and ultimately killing the other team, is repetitive. That argument is laughable. I could come up with ultimately what you need to do for any game - and say it is repetitive.
How else are you going to complete missions in GTA? Come up with some wacky 'innovative' new thing that plays like shit just to say it's different?
My point is that it's silly to say that GTA is repetitive when there are so many other games that fall into the same category as well, if not worse.
I think you dare get a fucking job.
@Pyroph: True, but GTA seems to do all the bad parts repetitively. Again, all one needs to do is look at the Saints Row 2 misson varieties to see how well it can be done.
I would totally agree with Jonathan's point if it was for any GTA game OTHER than IV. I seriously despised the GTA series until IV, but I thought IV was pretty great. Yes, it lacks some of the wackiness of Saints Row and the earlier GTA games, but they've made it less of a jack of all trades, master of none and added more substance to the game.
The driving system is realistic, takes skill to master and on its own can actually feel like a standalone racing game. The shooting system, although not great for multiplayer, works pretty smoothly and makes the fights a lot more fun. Also, I realize there were a lot of repetitive missions in the game, but comeon, usually after every 2 or 3 boring missions theres a fun and interesting one to keep you interested.
Also, going back to TLAD, there definitely seems to be much more interesting missions, plus some of the new mechanics, weapons and multiplayer modes are pretty fun. If you enjoyed the main game, get it.
I liek it.
Oh, wow. This discussion sure sprawled out fast, haha.
Thanks for all the replies; I'll probably go ahead a buy LTD after all. Here's hoping that 6 months away from GTA will have quelled my annoyance with the repetition.
Oh, and nice spot, Mr Wrighty 987. I'd completely forgotten that RE5 wasn't launching the same time as the others. That makes my decision a lot easier.
I beat TLAD last night and ended up really, really loving it. Yes some of the missions are repetitive, but it does a lot more with the open-endedness of GTA in the last third or so of the game.
I thought the best missions from GTAIV were the assassin missions. There was little to no structure to them, just you and the city. You could climb a building and snipe them if you wanted to. You could get a car bomb and drive that into them, diving out then detonating it last second. You could call some buddies for backup and go guns blazing.
If GTA started structuring missions more like that, I would absolutely adore the game. TLAD gets very close to achieving this in some places and for that alone I recommend it.
