It looks awesome, and I'll probably buy it, but...this is unlike Valve.

It is an entirely new 5 campaign game, built on the same engine, improving conventions set in the original. Half Life 2 and its proceeding episodes were all built on the same engine, with the same characters, continuing a storyline and furthering character development.
Left4Dead2 is a completely new set of characters and backstory, brand new locations, completely new gameplay conventions such as changing the layout of a level dynamically and day/night cycle. Not to mention all new weapons, as well as more special infected.
I agree, releasing it a year after the original is a little iffy, especially when so much is expected of Valve, but I think the changes they've made and the work they've done creating a brand new setting with new and unique characters deserves its own pedestal.

I just feel that they are making this into a milk cow.

The Director Engine addons listed at the end of your blog are precisely what should have been done as DLC for the first game. I don't care at all about the characters; the modding community has several top-notch full campaigns in the works.
What's worse is the first game's mod tools aren't even officially fully released yet, and it's about to be outdated by its successor in under a year...

You folks pay for map packs all the time, this is that and muuuuch much more.
Also, if you read the IGN article, they talk about bringing L4D into L4D2 so there is no need to swap games.
