Yeah, Microsoft used little dinky thermal pads on the chips; which are really only meant to be used for temporary fixes. The coins, being 75% copper, conduct heat. So they are in a sense acting as makeshift heatsinks. The electrical tape stops them from shorting out anything on the motherboard.
Going to give this a try. Already done the X-Clamps and it lasted a short while, but this might make it more permananet.
Cheers guys! I appreciate the MacGuyver reference hahah. One day I will be as awesome as Richard Dean Anderson... one day.
@Stinky: Yeah I contemplated that, but I just had this shit lying around the house - thermal paste, electrical tape and coins are very common in my room haha - and the thing was broken anyway, so I didn't want to buy stuff for it if it wasn't going to work.
I'll definitely update if it the console fails later on down the line.
Going to go buy Halo Reach and a wifi adapter on Thursday! Can't wait :D

Could you do us a favor and give a little deeper tutorial? Did you just reapply the thermalpaste to all the spots? and where did you put the pennys exactly?
Alan Wake will be worth the work. I hope your fix lasts though, I had no such luck. Eventually I bought a 360 at wally world, swapped the guts out (so the serial matched) and returned it to the store. (If I say it broke, they just send it to microsoft)
