So I haven't ever owned an Xbox360. I bought a PS3 a little after it's release and it's served me well. I also have a decent PC, and seeing as most of MS games have been released on that, I haven't really needed one. A few gems like Alan Wake, Shadow Complex, Gears of War, etc made me think twice every time I passed one in store, but I resisted.

But as of 20 minutes ago I have a free Xbox 360! Here is how I went about it.

Step 1: Get free 3ROD Xbox 360 from my sister. (Out of warranty, so she just bought a new one)

Step 2: Open console up and apply thermal paste

Step 3: Wrap four pairs of pennys/5 cent pieces in electrical tape and stick them on the motherboard chips

Step 4: Hail to the king, baby.

Just in time for Halo Reach :)

I have a lot of experience in building my own computers, but I'd never opened up a console before. It was heaps of fun! I totally didn't expect to get it working, but I'm happy I did. If you've ever made your own computer, fixing your xbox is a total cakewalk.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my efforts ^__^

I'll post once I get a gametag and shiz in case anyone from Aus wants to add me.

Until next time, gentlemen!

Damn, nice work!
Pretty impressive, well done.
So do the taped coins reinforce the GPU to prevent it from warping?
Dude, you're awesome!

If my xbox vet red rings, I'm sending it to you.
I bow to your epicness.
Update us with how its working occasionally. Nice.
Are the wrapped coins acting as heatsinks for various chips on the board or what?
Yeah, Microsoft used little dinky thermal pads on the chips; which are really only meant to be used for temporary fixes. The coins, being 75% copper, conduct heat. So they are in a sense acting as makeshift heatsinks. The electrical tape stops them from shorting out anything on the motherboard.
Fixing your xbox without modding it. I can dig that!
You can get nice little stick on heatsinks for those things, I put them all through my old c128D.
Going to give this a try. Already done the X-Clamps and it lasted a short while, but this might make it more permananet.
Nice work bro.
Well done, sir.
grats skribble!
Cheers guys! I appreciate the MacGuyver reference hahah. One day I will be as awesome as Richard Dean Anderson... one day.

@Stinky: Yeah I contemplated that, but I just had this shit lying around the house - thermal paste, electrical tape and coins are very common in my room haha - and the thing was broken anyway, so I didn't want to buy stuff for it if it wasn't going to work.

I'll definitely update if it the console fails later on down the line.

Going to go buy Halo Reach and a wifi adapter on Thursday! Can't wait :D
Could you do us a favor and give a little deeper tutorial? Did you just reapply the thermalpaste to all the spots? and where did you put the pennys exactly?
Alan Wake will be worth the work. I hope your fix lasts though, I had no such luck. Eventually I bought a 360 at wally world, swapped the guts out (so the serial matched) and returned it to the store. (If I say it broke, they just send it to microsoft)
Nah, dunno if UK pennies have a different makeup or are too thick or whatever, but the console just spazzed out and acted like it was overheating the moment it was turned on.

Taking them off has gone back to my "no picture" state of before. Nice idea though :)
