They've run out of the 60 GB version because they stopped making them. It means they cleared out their backstock and are not replacing them. The only ones left to find now are 80 GB versions, and that's how Sony planned it all along.
Though it was fairly impressive seeing the sales jump the day they announced the price drop.

The only difference between the 60 and the 80 is the internal drive, too, so it's not as though they depleted a SKU or anything through sell through. You just hand the manufacturing division a new drive and say, DONT GO ALONE! TAKE THIS! and they get back to work. 60 becomes 80. No big whoop.
The sales spike is impressive, but what's more impressive is that a 60GB to 80GB would spur any kind of interest in sales. DVR's come for free with 160-300GB drives in 'em.

I was under the impression that the Emotion Engine was dropped from the 80GB model so true hardware backwards compatibility was lost with it. Like the European PS3's.
The 80GB does come with a game too and not just an extra 20GB. Motorstorm is actually pretty decent. A shallow single player experience but a barrel of monkey's online. 12 Monkey's to be exact.
