This week the video game community has learned two important things.
1) The XBOX360 price will drop to $300
2) The PS3 price will stay at $400
This has caused some stir as to whether or not it will hurt Sony to not drop their prices to stay competitive with Microsoft in the console war. The interesting thing I think everyone is forgetting is that even with the price drop
the PS3 is still cheaper then the XBOX360.
Wait … have I confused you? Are you asking yourself right now
“how can the PS3 possibly be cheaper then the XBOX360”. Well let’s just take a closer look at the financials of this console debate shall we.
System Cost – XBOX360 is cheaper
Well this is pretty much a no brainer. XBOX360 clearly has the cheaper system, at a grand total of $100 less then the PS3.
HD Cables – XBOX360 is cheaper
It has always shocked me that the PS3 prides itself on being an HD video game and movie player, but it doesn’t include the proper cables to broadcast in HD. WTF!!! The XBOX360 includes not only component HD cables, but also HDMI HD cables. Sony loses big time here.
Wireless Adapter – PS3 is cheaper
I don’t know about the rest of you, but my cable model is no where close to me PS3. Actually I don’t have any friends who keep their cable modem close to their TV, which means we all need a wireless adapter. The PS3 includes this free of charge. Those money grubbers at Microsoft charge $100 for a wireless adapter. Welcome to the wireless age Microsoft … you lose !!!
Rechargeable Battery Pack – PS3 is cheaper
I hate having to change out batteries. They aren’t cheap, and you never seem to have any when you need them. If you play your XBOX360 a lot you are going to go through batteries fast, so you need a rechargeable battery pack. Sony controllers include the battery pack for free, while Microsoft charges $20. Shame shame Microsoft.
3 Years of Online Service – PS3 is cheaper
I have to lump this cost into a 3 year period because most likely you are going to be using your console online for at least 3 years. The Sony service, while not as good as the XBOX Live, is at least free. Microsoft charges $50 a year for their service. That means 3 years of service is $150, while Sony is FREE!!! This is why people love Sony.
Conclusion - PS3 is $120 cheaper then the XBOX360
If you take all of these costs into consideration, the PS3 still ends up being $120 cheaper then the XBOX360. Notice I didn’t even mention the fact the PS3 includes a Blu-Ray player while the XBOX360 only plays DVDs. This really gives the PS3 a $400 advantage of the XBOX360, but I didn’t think it would be fair to include it, so I did not. Yes that’s right, rejoice all of you PS3 fanboys out there. Sony wins again!!! Better luck next time Microsoft.
HDMI cables shouldn't cost you $50. Components maybe $20-30 tops but I got a 3ft. long HDMI that works awesomely for $5.14 including S&H from Amazon.com.
I thinkt he XBL price should be greater but that is just me.
apple and oranges kiddies.
Still, this reminds me of all the PS3 vs 360 price arguments that went up when the PS3 was still $599... can't we just let go? :(
It does. He is full of shit. I have both a 360 and PS3.
I buy recharagable batteries for Xbox contoller and don't use Wifi on neither systems.
@Thefil: There is no better time to bring up old arguments then when the price war gets going again like it is now. ;-)
@Shipero: Both the controllers you buy seperately and the ones that come with the XBOX all use batteries. You have to buy the battery pack seperately.
I don't care, when I get a system that works from them I will stop saying it.
oooookay then. Keep in mind, if it wasn't for Xbox Live, and the service you pay for, you wouldn't have Sony FINALLY started putting an emphasis on online components for the PS3. All the stuff the great and glorious 2.40 brought was something that was available on the 360 from day one.
Okay, maybe you do need to take all cost into consideration but you are talking to a bunch of gamers. Let's say that PS3 does cost less than the 360. Who gives a shit? Like, it's not going to change the fact that most of us are going to go out and buy both regardless, if we don't have them already. This would be a great article for parents and grandparents but you're preaching to the choir.
Don't mind me though, I'm still upset you have a sealed copy of Grandia II and no way to play it.
...and I'm not meaning to come off bitchy but I just need something to do at work other than play in SQL.
Ron, there is another 3rd party option available. I saw it in at Best Buy. I'll see if I can find it.
You obviously have never heard of a wireless bridge.
As for batteries I prefer using cheap rechargables and not having the battery stuck in the controller. What happens in 10 years time when you can't find a controller for sale and all the batteries in your controllers are dead?
The author doesn't know about buying xbox live subscriptions on ebay either.
@Super Maggot I have not.
but let's not forget that at least in Europe the PS3 does not ship with a dual shock 3 so you have to add that onto the costs if you're European and want rumble
Why does everything dealing with video games today have to be about comparison and ranking? Each system has its awesome features, and each sucks in some way. Just enjoy what you're privileged enough to own and have fun playing video games.
Or, "STFUAJPG," as they say.
All I'll say is that you completely fail for using wireless for your gaming. Sorry to break it to you, but that's just the way it is. Ethernet cable is cheap dude, get a long one and run it along your baseboards.
either way though, I don't think this really matters when everyone pretty much has 1 or the other....or plans to get the other down the road.
If those are the prices for the official components then it´s a valid point of comparison, but yeah, multiplying the live price for 3 to make it 100 bucks more expensive creates a falacy.
So, this blog is crap and the topic should be now monkeys riding rhinos.
Sorry, but would a monkey in a cowboy outfit riding a dog suffice?
That's already included in the chart under "battery pack" the play and charge kit is 20 bucks.
Also, what if a person doesn't buy the 360 to go online?
So I wrote this article for many reasons, but one of them was a pyschology experiment. Last week I spent quite a bit of time defending the XBOX Live service, since the 2.40 update was coming out for the PS3. Because of this I got flamed and called an XBOX360 fanboy.
This week I defended the price of the PS3, since this is once again becoming a topic of conversation and some people seem upset Sony is not dropping there price. Now I am being labeled a PS3 fanboy. So which one am I?
Also, I know about the cheap Amazon XBOX Live service. I know about $5 HDMI cables. I know about cheaper rechargable batteries. I know wireless is slower then LAN. That doesn't matter though because this article was written as a basis for the basic consumer, who does not know about all these things.
I do appreciate all the insight though. I own the PS3, the XBOX360, the Wii, and a bunch of other systems. I support this stuff no matter how much it costs.
Sony online is free because its shit.
Battery packs for 360 are a necessity unless you have wired controllers
Bluray is bullshit because they dont look much better and you pay like 10 bucks more for every disc you buy.
And if youre playing online games with a wireless router you must hate playing online games.
Id say it evens out.
Ib4 I DONT USE WIRELESS/PSN SUCKS/BATTERIES ARE FINE
Also you forgot in your list that if you want a licensed blutooth headset ( like you want a licensed wireless adapter ), with the PS3, you'll have to fork over 80€ ( 127$ ) in Europe, where the 360 is also not 300 € but 250 €, so then the PS3 gets more expensive again....
this article is rubbish...
Also silver, if you don't want to be called a fanboy, don't write biased articles that make it seem like you are one :-) its easy as that ;-)
Also wasn't the pricedrop in the USA also to 250$ iso 300$ ? ( if not I'm sorry, but if I'm right you started of with the wrong numbers already... )
@Bmdubya: I don't think there is anyway to defend the Wii, so I won't try. Plus even if I did I am petty sure no one would label me a Wii fanboy. Is there even such thing as a Wii fanboy?
Anyway, I thought the post was interesting and all in good fun. Peripherals are a pain regardless of the system because they all cost way too much. Systems should come with two controllers (complete with battery packs and a charger), wireless capabilities, all the cables you would ever need, and a card that says "Thank you. We appreciate your business."
That is all :)
Also,
I'm sorry man, but if you see a comparison and that comparison insists on using an external wireless adapter that is not needed but then fails to mention an equally expensive addative for the 'winning' system, you'd get the idea its a bit biased as well...
Also, I own all 3 of them plus about 28 other consoles next to them, so my reply wasn't one of fanboyism, just one out of a quest for completenes, I was seriously pissed of at Sony when I saw what outrageous prices they charge for a wireless headset, its almost as expensive as my handmade SennHeiser ( one of the last series that was completely handbuilt) and that one is of a slighty better quality :p
Yeah so I shared this example with the hardcore Dtoid community. That's why we are all here right, to share our opinions on the video game industry.
I don't get this comment, first you go 'But its not for gamers! its for the average consumer!' and then when I ask why you put an average consumer article on dtoid it suddenly IS for gamers?
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this comparison, but I just saw some flaws that I think could be adjusted and improved upon in this comparison.
Systems should come with two controllers (complete with battery packs and a charger), wireless capabilities, all the cables you would ever need, and a card that says "Thank you. We appreciate your business."
I would go even further, why not include all 4 controllers with a console? I mean the Wii is a fucking moneydrain if you want to get all 8 pieces of equitment to play ( 4 wiimotes + nunchucks ), same with all the previous consoles... Wouldn't it be awesome if a console would come fully equipped every time?
also that card would be super!
