Why isn’t there a Destructoid iPhone App? Would anyone else, besides me, like one?
SilverDragon1979 | 1:59 PM on 07.14.2009 31 comments

Imagine a world where, at any point in time, you have access to the entire Destructoid Community at your fingertips. Imagine a world where you could read Jim Sterling’s snarky editorials, watch Anthony Burch’s Rants, or check out Yojimbo’s latest Blazblue blog without having to surf the internet. Now imaginee that you could do all of this anywhere in the entire world, whether you are relaxing on a beach in the South of France, snow boarding in the Colorado Rockies, or chilling on your friend’s couch as you watch him play another round of Street Fighter 4. You are probably saying to yourself right now, “how can all of this be possible. That is all make believe science fiction nonsense. Nothing like that could possibly exist in the real world.” Well maybe not, but if someone created an “Official Destructoid iPhone App” then this fantasy would become reality.

Now right about now you are probably thinking to yourself that someone who owns an iPhone can already access Destructoid using the internet browser. Why would they need an app that can do something that’s already possible? Well while it is true that you an access the Destructoid website using the built in Safari iPhone browser, it’s unfortunately really slow. It also doesn’t help that the site is fairly large now, so it can take a while to sort through the site and get to where you are going. I’m talking about an app that is streamlined specifically to make everything at Destructoid accessible at the touch of a finger.

I must admit that this is not some original idea I came up with. This more stems from seeing other websites do a great job of creating their own iPhone apps that make it much easier to access their website’s content. The best and most recent example of this is the GiantBomb iPhone App that was released last week. This app makes it extremely easy to access a lot of the content of the GiantBomb website, including reviews and videos. Not only does it make it easier to access, but it’s a lot faster to access then using the Safari browser. Now, unfortunately you can’t do everything on the GiantBomb App you can do on the website, but it’s still a huge step forward. This is kind of what I would like to see from Destructoid.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I would definitely pay for an official Destructoid iPhone app. I would say a price someplace between $1.99 and $4.99 would be completely fair. Not only would you get easier and faster access to the content, but you would also be financially supporting the site, which I am always a proponent of.

My question is, is a Destructoid iPhone App in the works? Does Niero have a top secret group of people working on it? Would anyone else purchase one besides me? Speak up and be heard, and maybe someone will notice and this fantasy I have created will become a reality.

I use Destructoid Toilet Edition occasionally when I'm on the...road...

If I actually had an iPhone, I'd very seriously consider this ap. However, the chances of me getting an iPhone are extremely low, at least until Verizon gets it and I start to hate my LG Voyager.

I wonder if we can get any of the Dtoid staff in here to comment on this? They would be the ones who would know if an iPhone app is even being considered or not.

I thought ElectroLemon made or pointed iPhone users in the right direction once. I'm not too sure though. If not he is the man... boy... dude to do it!

From what I remember...the software/license to make the apps costs $1000 to buy, it only works on a Mac, and I think you might have to pay a small fee to have Apple list the app in the app store. If you charge for it you get 70% of the profits Apple keeps 30%. After all that, an app would be cool, but dtoids version for mobile phones works just fine IMO.
